Don't mind the detractors.

They just won't stand the sight of anyone threatening their hegemony.

Instead of working harder to earn the stay atop, they rather others don't grow at all, just so they can keep a firm grip.
Bros, instead of attacking "the Oyinbos" why not wait to see the kind of agreement Nigeria is entering into, did the oyinbos sign with PBOC or the "private bank"?,do they have the same import habits like Nigeria?,so many other things should be considered.
Finally,Must we borrow because UK borrowed?

Which Is why I said Nigerians need to get their act right before doing anything else. Every nation is selfish. That is how the game is played. Nigerians should know this by now. If China had nothing to gain from this alliance they wouldn't be doing it. They definitely have more to gain than we do.

Deals are about gains for both parties, who gains the more can be evaluated when you have full facts and figures.

If what we think it is is what it is, it is a win-win situation then.

1 litre of PMS sells for N86.50 (no fuel scarcity, next fuel station is just 1km away), I am out of fuel along Ore-Benin road, you siphon 10 litres from your car and sell to me at N930 instead of N865 -- we both win sort of: you make profit; I get out of jail!

That is not what they are telling you. They see what you all don't want to acknowledge. The mentality of Nigerians cannot make it work because of corruption. It does not matter what great policies you put in place, corruption will destroy it. Just because western economies do it and it works for them, does not mean it will work for Nigeria. For example. The western world has refineries. So does Nigeria. Do the ones in Nigeria function? Nigeria has roads. So does the western world. Are the roads in Nigeria pliable? The western world has power generating means. So does Nigeria. When last did you have 24hr uninterrupted power supply? Nigerians have good ideas but lack the knowledge, will, or virtue to make anything worthwhile work. Corruption is the bane of the country.
My thoughts exactly.. well said

That question is left for the journalist to ask the Government officials when they return from their trip to China.. I think they are actually in best position to answer this since the writer did not go with them to China.

The article is full of assumption, nothing concrete in it. Not until the facts about the pack Nigeria entered with China is officially made available to the masses would one be able to analyze it properly.

I deliberately added the last part to see if you would get it and you don't. You said the west has spies in our ranks as if that is new. Germany has spies in the U.S and the U.S has in Germany. That does not stop them from being allies. My point is Nigerians act too naive in world politics. Every country is selfish and will not do anything unless it furthers it's self interest.

The writer left some questions unanswered...eg. Why was the swap not signed with the people's bank of China, like other countries did?

I thought that is what the commenters wanted to address but as usual, we have left the critical questions and be chasing shadows. None of the posters so far has even attempted to address the questions.

Exactly but because Nigerians are too lazy to do some thorough research in order to gain a profound understanding of world politics and economics they will repeat what everyone else is saying over and over again and that is "The West is evil. They don't want us to develop."

Now they look to the Chinese as their saviors and in a few years they will blame the Chinese for their shortcomings when the Chinese do what every sane government should do, pursue their own self-interest and do business as usual.

Nigerians are too naive because they are too lazy to study complex realities and would rather make simplistic statements that explain the world to them in black and white because this is easier to understand.

The blame the IMF and the Chinese are expanding their power of influence there.
They hate on America but America is the top export destination for their products.

It was the same with the structural adjustment programs (SAP). They worked in some regions but mostly failed in Africa. Not because the USA or the IMF wanted to sabotage African countries but because Nigerian leaders didn't implement them like they were supposed to do. Then they told their people that the West deceived them and Nigerians actually believe it.

The only mistake that the IMF made with the SAPs was to trust that African leaders can be trusted to implement them in an efficient way.

I understand your concern, but I'm tired of the shenanigans of the West! The fact that our government came up with this bold step has given me renewed hope, that someone somewhere is thinking outside the box. And get one thing very clear: the West has always been the enemy (albeit a veiled one), they even have their agents within our ranks! We've put up with their condescending postures and subtle threats for much too long, it's time we put our faith elsewhere.

We are not declaring war on the west, but we should be free enough to choose our allies.

Kindest regards.

Nigeria is free to choose its allies as much as they want. Who is stopping Nigeria from doing so?

And how is the USA your enemy when it is your top export destination?

They tell you africans and her leaders, despite having a great deal of resources in their possesion, lack insight, hardwork and determination to develop their countries but You will be surprised at the amount of work being put in by this same accusers to keep the african continent backward and underdeveloped..!!

I had a discussion with my boss last week. He was asking me what has moving to America positively done for me. I did not hesitate. I told him that it was EXPOSURE. He did not understand. He said that he thought that i was a graduate before moving to America and because of that i was exposed. I told him that i used to think that way too until i moved there. There is a big big difference between education and exposure. Nigerians lack exposure which is why the mindset remains the same since independence. It is one thing to read about something, it is something else to experience how things really work. Nigerians have a long way to go.

The Naiara is already down and has been depreciated by the harsh economic realities. The value is being held up artificially. Devaluation would only reflect its real value and as it is traded on the parallel market.

Well, not everyone who travels benefits from exposure in such a way. I guess, it is your personality, education combined with exposure that made you reason the way you do now. So take some credit for this positive development of your mind and mindset. wink

I heard jonathan first initiated this deal with the chinese. maybe we were so consumed by bokoharam wahala n we did not understand what was happening. . just like the TSA, I hope jonathan will not be mentioned n villified when it turns bad.

another question d op put to nigerians was why did nigeria made d swap deal with state bank instead of the central bank of china? also how much did nigeria swap with the chinese?
how much will be paid as interest to the chinese at d expiration of the deal?
these r questions that needs to be asked not commending the president when we r yet to be fully brief on the suppose china trip.

I'm disappointed in Nigerian youths. They read but can not comprehend. Or was it love for PMB that blinded them from seeing the writer's view point? They ignored the issues raised and started praising PMB. The west did theirs with transparency. The real reason for this article is to provide answers to this issues raised. Too Many unanswered questions.

The only thing the writer left out which I don't think was intentional was the fact that both PBOC and ICBC are owned by the Chinese Government.

PBOC is their Central Bank while the also have 4 other banks like the Agricultural Bank of China dealing with Agric lending and infrastructures, China Construction Bank dealing with general construction and so on.

We are dealing with the ICBC because it's an investment Bank. They issue loans and invest in infrastructures. The ICBC loaned $400 million towards the completion of the 1,870 MW Gibe III dam in Ethiopia hence engaging them to fund our rail system and other projects..

It makes little or no difference, they are both owned by the Chinese government..

Stop being naive! Trade and diplomatic relations between two states doesn't necessarily imply friendship.

A question for you wise one: does the U.S trade with China? I believe the answer to that is 'yes'. Yet China has no pretensions about the U.S as her number one enemy. Does that answer your question.

And one more thing, when I used the term "the West" I was not referring to the U.S alone. I included all Western countries and their institutions of oppression (and neo-colonization) like the IMF, World Bank, NATO, etc.
