You can be in the air force or the navy your entire career, that doesn't mean you will know how to fly a plane. It is hard to actually get that kind of training. Besides, most retired fighter pilots prefer to be a flight test pilot. Very risky thou

Because you will be testing new plane technologies. Accidents always happen.

The good news thou is that the risk is decreasing due to modern techs and safety standards.

You dont need to be in the military to learn how to fly. there are many schools you can go to and learn the skills. Flying in the military is different especially if it is a combat aircraft.

The tests required to be a fighter pilot is very rigorous and training takes years. Commercial pilot training however is not that hard since they dont do too much flying anymore because of the modern techs on commercial planes. operating and safety procedures are the important things you need to know if you are flying a commercial plane.

If you join the air force (you will have to join first before you try out the pilot training program)because you want to fly and you end up not making it because you fail your medical or exams which is very competitive, You cant get out of your contract and you will just end up stalling your pilot career.

You can start flying within 2 years if you take the civilian route
