Most of you will not understand what is happening in the north. When ever you hear of a crisis up north, this is the most likely scenario: a muslim guy has some issues with a non muslim whether Christian or not makes no difference to the muslim guy and his friends who on seeing the little squabble will descend on the non muslim and kill him. Depending on whether they are satisfied or not will determine if they should attack any nearby assumed Christians and their businesses and churches. Unfortunately, non muslim youths seeing what's happening will have to rally round to protect themselves and their properties and in most cases will go for reprisals which will entail burning down non muslim properties and of course, mosques. If there were shrines commonly found around, the muslim youths will gladly burn it down but the non muslim youths(Christians) will not tamper with them because they know the antagonists. This is just a summary of what is normally referred to as religious riots in the north. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with religion but quickly snowballs into religion because that serves as an easier route for rallying men. The tribes that make up the muslim army are usually; hausa/fulanis, kanuris, black muslim immigrants who mostly speak hausa now(they are known with the broad name buzzu, although the name is particularly for the Niger immigrants), muslims from the minority tribes of the north and in few cases yoruba muslims who have been heavily hausanized. Those that make the bulk of the so called Christian army are: firstly the indigenous non muslim youths of the affected areas, Igbos, Yoruba Christians( where applicable) and Christians from the minority tribes of the south.
The hausa/fulani youths are the belligerents in 99% cases of such wanton destruction of lives and properties. No one has thought of doing a research on the economic effect on the various arson perpetrated during the numerous crisis that has rocked northern Nigeria. Its no rocket science that poverty has been on the increase in that region and I can say that those crisis plays a big role in ensuring it endures and even worsens.
