Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe at the N.C.N.C political rally, Urualla, 1959.

In preparation for the independence of Nigeria, in 1960,three main parties ran in the important Election.
The N.C.N.C was led by Azikiwe, The N.P.C was led by Ahmadu Bello while the Action Group was led by Chief Awolowo.
After the Election, no party won the majority, the N.C.N.C. and the N.P.C joined to form a government, when independence came in 1960, Abubakar Balewa was made the Prime Minister while Nnamdi Azikiwe was appointed as the Governor General.
