Something new and awesome just popped up. We've seen in sci-fi movies of transparent devices. Well the possibility is only gaining edge daily.







Researchers at the University of Maryland have been working on a new treatment that gives a regular piece of wood some rather interesting new properties including transparency, improved insulation and more.


The scientists began by boiling the wood in water, sodium hydroxide and a number of other chemicals for two hours. This process removes lignin, the molecule responsible for giving wood its classic color.
The team then poured epoxy, a type of resin, which makes the wood four to fives times stronger.


To allow light to pass through the wood more directly, they incorporated poly(methyl methacrylate), also known as acrylic or Plexiglas . They could see through the resulting material, which was twice as strong as Plexiglas.

“Although the wood isn’t as
crystal clear as glass, its haziness provides a possible advantage for solar cells,” the scientists said.
“Specifically, because the material still traps some light, it could be used to boost the efficiency of these cells.”

“Among the work to be done next is enhancing the transparency of the material and scaling up the manufacturing process,” Dr. Berglund said.
“We also intend to work further with different types of wood.”

Another interesting aspect of the transformation is the way the wood still retains its original grooves.
The end result is something that's not only stronger than glass but a much more effective insulator, too.
