President Muhammadu Buhari has said that
Nigeria made a costly mistake by depending
solely on oil as only source of income.
The President admitted that Nigeria was in for the
worst times for failing to save or diversify its
economy, which he said, had been greatly
affected by the crash of oil prices.
Buhari made this remark while bidding the
outgoing Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr.
Saeed Koozechi, farewell in Abuja.
According to him, his administration was
vigorously pursuing the diversification project.
“We made a terrible mistake by becoming a
mono-product economy hinged on oil and we are
now in a volatile situation, due to the crash in oil
prices.
“We have seen the benefits of diversification
which helped Iran to survive many years of
sanctions and still came out strong”, he said.
“We are now fully committed to economic
diversification. Most of the things on our import
bills can be produced here. And we are
determined to achieve that self-dependency,” he
said.

Truth. This is the truth and nothing but the truth

We are a nation with one major source of income, We had a windfall like never before, instead of diversifying our economy and building infrastructure some saw it as an opportunity to loot the windfall

Just like the story of Joseph in Egypt where he dreamt of 7 yrs of windfall and 7yrs of famine. 2000years ago people had the sense to save for rainy days but our perpetually inebriated ineffectual Buffoon and his cronies ate it all

What we failed to do in the time of plenty we would be forced to do in this period of scarcity

We already know about our mistake that's why you are voted-in to fix it. But it's like you have used 365days of your term to play the blame game. We are tired of reasons why the economy has gone bad. When need results as regards it's being lunched back to life pls.

We all know that GEJ was not ready to rule because it fell on his lap which made him allow every known and unknow chalatan fleece our common wealth. But you should stop this your parochial way of looking at his tenure.

We did not diversify did not start 6yrs ago, it started from when we had oil boom and some people told us we had money and the problem was how to spend it.

Other people that had been at the helm of affair in this country are also responsible because they also failed to diversify, infact they are worse because the country had a period when it had oil boom, a better opportunity and nothing was done.

From Gowon to obasanjo to Shagari to Buhari to Babangida to Abacha to abubarka to Obasanjo to Jonathan are all buncha useless visionless inebriated ineffectual Buffoons.

Don't make it look like Jonathan is the only one responsible for where we are today. if Obasanjo knew what he was doing in 1999 we won't be where we are today, he even wanted to perpetuate himself in power for a 3rd term.

I dont even think he have any moral right to talk about diversification after allocation of a mere 87 billion naira for agriculture.

Obasanjo despite his imperfection especially with his politics, did his best economically. He got us debt cancellation, He opened up the Telecoms sector of the economy which is one of the highest employers of labor in the country currently, He stabilized the banking sector with the 25B consolidation and he worked with oil never at Jonathans level

Gowon regime is about 50yrs old now, the oil boom that was recent could have been better managed

We failed to diversify, kuku diversify naa or commence diversification procedures, at least start with portrayal of tangible intents and commitments. I still marvel at the way and rate at which we got here from 1960. Nigeria, it's economy and quality of life seem to worsen with each passing admin, it never gets better. Countries that have nothing but sand fare much better in the global frontiers while we languish in misery and penury borne out of mismanagement of our bountiful resources.

so you agree someone can have imperfections that would make him not be effective. i guess it is obasanjos imperfections that made him not privatise NNPC, libery issue, coja, halliburton, siemens, shares in transcorp and obajana cement,16b dollars frittered away on providing power and his imperfections also wanted him to aspire for a third term when he knew it was not in the constitution. it only goes to show that if Obasanjo was in GEJ's shoes he would have not relinquished power had he been beaten at the poll.

i just think it is unfair to just heap every thing that is wrong with this country on GEJ. agreed he was an ineffective president coupled with the fact that he could not even control his wife so he really had no business leading a country like Nigeria. it was even the perfect Obasanjo that schemed him into power.

i will not mention buhari and PTF, Abacha, Babangida and Abdulsalami let us leave their own imperfections because Jonathan was supposed to be perfect.

until we do the right thing even in this dire situation we will continue to grope in the dark like zombies.

The agricultural sector of the country that was booming before you became president, where is it today??

Stupid man talking rubbish...you are talking diversity yet you even allocated more resources for your ministry of propaganda than the ministry of agriculture because you know it will take the activeness of that department to save ur bacon till 2019.

my sentiments exactly.

Like Hitler who in his reign witnessed the German economy grow to be the greatest in europe only to decide he wanted to conquer the world.

Even if Buhari eventually recovers this country he will destroy it by doing something as stupid as declaring sharia in Nigeria.

This diversify word sef. Na alien word? Diversify everyday and nothing is being put in place to achieve it. Imagine how tomatoes died and wasted in a whole country and it was not detected and treated. That word too dey sweet for fayemi mouth like a man saying I love u to a woman.

When you are and Abacha were looting the country, didn't you tell him the need to diversify? .. For me, past military leaders were in the best position to diversify the country because they had so much resources at their disposal.. Nothing like NASS and all this money gulping MDAs and other government parastatals..
