Russian President Vladimir remains one of the heads of state we respect, but when it comes to anything about establishing nuclear plant in Nigeria we are not amused.

We note the announced plan by the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria that the Russian and Nigerian governments are planning to establish a nuclear centre in Nigeria, and we say No to it.

The reason why we say No is that nuclear energy, while being a ‘clean’ source of energy is one of the most dangerous, and considering the currentl poor safety record in Nigeria, this is not the time to think of making inroads into nuclear energy.

NIGCOMSAT 1 EXAMPLE

When Nigeria’s first sattelite NIGCOMSAT 1 was lost in space, all the country lost was hundreds of millions in money. But a nuclear accident is no childs play. Even Russia that wants to bring such technology with all its technological advancement, suffered about the worst nuclear disaster in the world when the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant in Ukraine had an accident.

The city of Chernobyl remains a ghost town till today, as a result of that accident. People have died from cancer, years after the accident, and people’s ancestral lands have been laid waste, as generations simply can’t step into Chernobyl for fear of radioactive poisoning.

Let every Nigeria continue to legally oppose the establishment of nuclear centre or power plant in his hometown. If they want to give us electricity, let them give us coal power, not nuclear power.

Another idiot on the loose.

Chernobyl that happened ages ago.

Or does he want us to keep depending on the SS unreliable fossil fuel for energy production!?

Dumb idiot

So because of if an aircraft crashes everyone in it would probably die we should not fly? ?

Do u know we use nuclear technology already in this country?? At least in the medical field.

Atleast it's a research center for God's sake

Our educational system is now worst than that of Americans (highly intelligent people who are so foolish out side there area of practice)

Nuclear energy is safe and clean.... For a population like ours and small land mass.... Nuclear is the key

If you had good points, you wouldn't need to supplement your points with gratuitous insults.

Tell that to the children in the photo below (victims of nuclear disaster from Chernobyl). Nigeria can only go nuclear when she is ready for it. For now, we are not ready. Common satellite (Nigcomsat 1) got lost in space. And now you want to play with nuclear. Na beans?

The child below had a better future, until peaceful nuclear power nuked that future. This power shouldn't come anywhere near Nigeria.

Pls stop this public display of ignorance. The nigcomsat1 that disappeared was it due to negligence or a faulty equipment that was made by the Chinese space agency, and besides the Chinese replaced the satellite since it was their fault.
If you do not have confidence in your nigerian engineers, we do . It's not like it will be sited in a volatile region of the country. There are a lot of locations up north that we can house the plant.

We still lack good maintenance culture. Nuclear energy is good but any mistake from it is more deadlier than bombing a pipeline. This will likely be stationed close to water and that region is likely to be Hmmmmmm.

As much as nuclear energy is a step in the right direction but truth be told the maintenance culture in the country is nothing to write home about.

Am with you on this one OP. Anybody who likes it can offer a location in his/her backyard, like someone said the north can take one for the team perhaps Sokoto

With nuclear, the educated in the locality where it is located will not be able to sleep with 2 eyes closed. In the event of any nuclear accident as a result of carelessness, even neighbouring states around the site will not be immune from any radioactive winds... that carry cancer-causing radioactive substances as if they are carrying dust. Nuclear power is not yet for Nigeria. We should say no to it like we did last time it reared its ugly head.

We say no nuclear anything. Not in Geregu, not in Warri.

Believe me its gonna be politicized especially when buhari is desperate to score some points. All I can say is I and my family won't be around in case of any nuclear accident in the country.
We were all against the grazing bill but buhari included it anyway, so even if we re against a nuclear plant in the country if buhari wants it he's gonna get it our opinion really don't count unless we adopt some radical approach
Re: Nigeria Does Not Need A Nuclear Centre by persius555(m): 11:20am On May 29, 2016
South africa has two commercial nuclear power plants that generate all together 1,800 MW of electricity(5% of its total power output).
80% of its power output is coal derived. As it stands, nuclear power is the cheapest and reliable source of energy. This explains why south africa ranks among the top world emmiters of carbon oxide.
For a country like nigeria whose energy demand is yet to exceed 20,000MW, we might consider tapping into our coal reserves and other renewable source of energy.
That is not to say nuclear energy is a no-no, but we have cheaper sources of energy that we are yet to explore.

Don't underestimate the power of publicity, Bro. The grazing bill is almost abandoned by its supporters due to comments from people like you and us. What we must do is to continue to have our say, to speak the truth to power. Do you know the anti-social media bill has been abandoned? Nigeria's independence itself was as a result of comments like these on papers like Zik's West African Pilot.

The greatest weapon on earth is not nuclear bombs. It is the human soul on fire. So let's keep on keeping on.

What an irony! Just last Friday on NTA, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was calling for Nigeria to consider the use of nuclear to generate power.

We need it. If it is going to be in Lagos, no problem. Because some few states have failed in securing their states doesnt mean the entire country is unsafe.

Let us exhaust coal first before we start thinking of nuclear. Nuclear can only happen when our maintenance culture is top notch.

Imagine people forced to evacuate whole states because of an ordinary accident. God forbid, but if 'our enemy'should become careless and something happens, will the unaffected states be ready to accommodate the exiles from affected states? Millions of permanent exiles? Ask the people of Chernobyl who have not set foot on their region in more than 25 years.
