A new militant group, Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta, has emerged with a threat to continue to attack oil and gas facilities across the Niger Delta region unless the Nigerian government agreed to award 60 per cent oil blocs to the people of the region.

The new group which spoke for the very first time on Wednesday also demanded that the federal government allow the $16 billion Export Processing Zone otherwise called Delta Gas City project begin operations in earnest.

It, however, gave the government a two-week ultimatum to ensure that their demands were adequately met for a lasting ceasefire in the region.

Spokesperson of Ultimate Warrior, as it chose to be addressed, Sibiri Taiowoh, in a statement obtained by our correspondent, said if the FG truly wants peace in the region, it should award 60 per cent oil bloc to indigenous people from the region as its primary demand for a ceasefire.

The group further asked for commencement of academic activities at Federal Maritime University established during the regime of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Warning further, it said failure to meet its demands, would warrant total shutting down of vital oil facilities including Chevron BOP, Okan Platform, MEREN Gas Gathering Compression Platform and Chevron Tank Farm.

The statement added, “We are also behind the recent pipeline bombing in the Niger Delta region and I can assure you we will not stop until the EPZ project and the Maritime University are totally completed and start operations.

“We want to be the ones to be safe guarding oil pipeline in our area so as to create more jobs for our people. We would resist any attempt to give surveillance contracts of pipeline in our backyard to foreigners. We want the pipeline jobs to be given to our indigenous people.”

“We also want 60 per cent of the oil blocs to be allocated to the Niger Deltans just as the Federal Government has also allocated 80 per cent to those who are not from the oil producing area and just as 50 per cent of the resource was used to develop the non-oil area when we were producing cocoa and groundnut as main economic resources, the same 50 percent should be use to develop the Niger Delta region because we are the ones suffering the brunt of oil pollution and degradation in the region”, it further added.

Seems Buhari's ear problem is a blessing in disguise, he won't be troubled by this news because he no longer listens to BBC hausa.

Hmmm

There will always be sporadic, violent eruptions in the ND, until the injustices against the people are extensively and adequately address. The people have been short-changed for so long and they can no longer bear it.

From poor infrastructures, biting unemployment, little or no FG presence, unending environmental pollution, uneven representation in the FG and it's agencies to illegal allocation of their oil blocks to appease political power house and party cronies

The lopsided allocation of oil blocks during the military era and 1999 - 2007 should be revisited and justly addressed.

It goes beyond temporarily silencing agitators with stipends or surveillance contracts.

Their grievances should be attended to with utmost urgency, sincerity and renewed enthusiasm.

@emboldened
This is the sentiment across Niger Delta, 50% should be used to develop the Niger Delta while Nigeria share the remaining 50%.

Don't they also want all corruption charges against ND politicians who stole money to be dropped?

The problem of the Niger Delta is found in their own house. These states get 13% derivation from crude oil sales. Before you say that is not enough, just look at the infrastructure that has been developed by Akwa Ibom (good roads everywhere, world-class hospital and stadium) and Cross River states (Tinapa, Obudu, etc). You'll rarely hear of militant/criminal activities in these two states

Ok lets look at Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states where militancy is concentrated. These states are the highest beneficiaries of the 13% derivation rule, collecting trillions of Naira since it was implemented. Do you hear of life-changing infrastructure being built with the money? No. What we hear is Alamesigha dressed as a woman to escape bail from UK, Peter Odili granted perpetual injunction against arrest, James Ibori in jail in UK for money laundering (forfeiting hundreds of millions of pounds meant to develop his state to the UK that does not even need the money), etc. Furthermore, their own son was president for six years and he could not implement a single project in his entire geographical zone not to talk of his state belente his own village.

Yet, criminals from these particular three states (Delta being the main one), continue to blame 'lack of federalism' while asking for corruption charges to be dropped against people who stole money that is enough to turn the entire ND into a paradise. Akwa Ibom and Cross River are leaving you people behind and I don't see the same 'lack of federalism' holding them back. SMH.

If you give Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa their own country, their leaders will loot their own people dry and they'll still blame the poor Hausa man in Bauchi who's farming onions. People in the ND need to hold their leaders accountable while also looking in the mirror.

Rant over
