Fashola: Profile Of Ministers Of Power/energy Of Some Countries by Nobody: 7:34pm On Jun 13, 2016
Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, is the minister of power, works and housing in Nigeria. Since his assumption of office, the nation's power generation moved up to 5000 megawatts but suddenly dropped to as low as a 1000 megawatts and has since been fluctuation between that amount and 2000 megawatts. Many critics have called for his head even when they know fully well of the challenges of faced in the sector. Even after applauding the Niger delta militants for blowing up pipelines supplying gas to our stations, these same people still complain when electricity supply drops.

They first stated that they are disappointed that Fashola promised to end power problem in the country under 6 months, a thing the minister has denied and urged then to state where he said such.

Their latest detraction is that Fashola is a lawyer and therefore should not be seen anywhere near where electricity issue is discussed. These same so-called literate think one has to be an electrical engineer before heading an energy ministry. They forget that we've had so many of them for decades without any success. What the sector needs is actually an administrator and not necessarily an engineer.

To prove those detractors wrong, below are profile of Energy/Power ministers in some respected countries abroad. Check to see what they studied in school.

1. Segolene Royal (France)

Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy

After secondary school, Marie-Ségolène attended a local university where she graduated 2nd in her class with a degree in Economics. Her eldest sister then suggested she prepare the entrance exam to the elite Institut d'études politiques de Paris popularly called Sciences Po , which she attended on scholarship. There she discovered politics of class and feminism.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ségolène_Royal

2. Piyush Goyal (India)

Minister for power, coal, new and renewable Energy.

He has had a strong academic record - all-India second rank holder Chartered Accountant and second rank holder in Law in Mumbai University.

3. Alexander Novak (Russia)

Minister for Energy

In 1993 he graduated from Norilsk Industrial Institute as a specialist on Economy and Management in Metallurgy.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Novak

4. Joematt Pattersson (South Africa)

Minister of Energy

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History from the University of the Western Cape and Higher Diploma in Education from the
University of the Western Cape.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tina_Joemat-Pettersson

5. Amber Rudd (England)

Secretary of state for energy and climate change.

She was educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College , an independent school in Gloucestershire , and from 1979–1981 at Queen's College, London , an independent day school for girls in London, followed by Edinburgh University where she read history.

I believe that our power issues will be solved as soon as the problems created by militancy is solved.

to the detractors..
criticise like a literate next time.

You can't compare Nigeria where electricity is the major concern and problem to countries who have solved this problem more than 100 years ago.

Just as anybody can maintain, drive and repair an already built car which was already build by an engineer. Those western countries you mentioned are already been structured so anybody can maintain and regulate those things not Nigeria where things aren't properly fixed yet.

This government isn't doing well in electricity aspect. They are only concern about increasing charges without even providing electricity

The reason we think he's not performing due to his qualification/profile is because of his non-performamce since he assumed office. Imagine power supply dropping to zero megawatts about three or four times after assuming office. Had it been he has been performing as expected, nobody will remember that he's a qualified lawyer/SAN.

Those you wrote up there are performing up and even beyond expectations, that's why their citizens do not have problems with whatever their profile/qualification is.

Really, anyone from any discipline can serve as power minister. But mind you, these ministers have inherited an already established power infrastructure built hundreds of years ago by their forefathers who were actually scientists and engineers.

Nigerias situation is by no means comparable to these countries where the ministers are only engaged mostly mentainance and policy adjustment..

To build the non existent infrastructure we need atechnical person.

Fashola sadly, has only tried to turn this into a money making venture for his DISCO buddies while forming lawyer/super minister

Dont compare these countries with nigeria pls

power didn't drop to zero megawatts more than once. Don't mislead the public.

How do you expect him to perform when gas pipelines supplying power stations keep getting cracked by militants who constantly get applauded by the same people feeling the brunt of it all?

Remember, this is a problem of over decades. Exercise patience.

Nigeria needs a man who knows the ins and outs of generation, transmission and distribution at this stage. Barth Nnaji is very good example.

We dont need capitalist public servants derailing less than 2000MW for 180 million ppl. We dont meed pretenders at this time

We need the REAL DEAL.

Stop shifting the goal post. You can google for such info.

It's not compulsory an electrical engineer administrates an energy ministry. Those countries with stable power supply, who now have their energy Ministers from a different field, are not stupid by allowing such. They know that all that is needed is a competent administrator to oversee affairs in the sector. If the person is not competent, then it is equivalent to telling a farmer to perform CS on a pregnant woman.

But if the farmer is a technocrat, he can bring out the best in the doctors. Give Fashola time as he works to bring out the best in the engineers subordinate to him.

Those guys you mentioned tried very well. They were almost getting it. I can vividly remember during the time of Nebo, light in my area was about 18hours daily. As at today, we get light 6hrs per 48hours. Some time non at all.

Can u compare now and then? And don't bring the bombing issue in because that's why we have the government to contain all these.

Because light was around for 18hrs in your neighborhood doesn't mean the whole nation had it that way too.

Currently, my area enjoys 16hrs supply everyday to the extent that I doubt when I read comments about other areas not getting supply.

if I show you a picture of a station Fashola visited, you will know that those guys didn't do Jack. The place was rotten.

Its not about whether you were getting light 48hrs a day or not. While you're complaining of darkness now, I boast of light so should that make me discountenance your testimonies of blackout?

Under fashola, Nigeria generated over 5000Megawatts for the first time in her history.

Prof nnaji and prof nebo who are both experts in power couldn't break that threshold in 8 years!

Yet they didn't have idiots destroying shell, chevron and agip gas Lines to power stations at the same time!

they obviously can't.

Some of them are even saying we shouldn't compare ourselves with those countries whose Minister are from unrelated fields cos they are way ahead of us in advancement.

If it were nations lesser than Nigeria I compared, they would have screamed and formed a conclusion that the reason Fashola is yet to deliver is because we followed the footsteps of undeveloped nations by appointing someone from a non-related field as Energy/Power Minister.

These people are pathetic.

Some time in february this year, power generation peaked at its highest ever of 5074mw. After the announcements, some faceless miscreants probably directed by politicians picked up their dynamite and began a bombing spree and here you are, expecting power to be discussed without giving attention to an obvious full frontal sabotage of the system?

Quit deceiving yourself, Nigeria has no security and if any disgruntled miscreant or politician decides that he wants to Bleep Nigeria up, it can easily be done, and that is exactly what is going on presently. Escravos gas pipeline has been bombed more than 3 times within few months, this is the major line taking gas to most power stations.
