@poster; you can make good for a stand-up comedian. just to whet your appetite, studying in nigeria is best because lecturers never go on strike, you have comfortable accomodation of one student to a room, you have stable electricity on campus, lecturers do not coerce students to buy handouts to get pass marks, no cultism, the labs and libraries are well equipt, and the list is endless. . . . . how about that for a start?

I prefer to study in Nigeria because I will get more holidays in the form of ASUU strike. I also will not mind Nigeria because I can join cults and beat people up. I will also do love-vendor for aristo girls. I can also not do practicals through out my stay in school. Also, if my father has money I can avoid ASUU strike and go to Convenant Uni or Babcock, where we must become 'born again' and have our freedom curtailed.

I think with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince even the most hot headed antagonist of Nigerian schools mentally, socially, educationally, physically, generally, psychologically and spiritually that schooling in Nigeria is better than Abroad.

One thing I love about Nigerians is that we so love to decieve ourselves!!!That is why we are where we are today. Do u know what 'ASUU strike, poor accomodation, cultism and the rest' can do to an educational system. Not to mention our old and ancient ways of teaching theory and no practicals. All our labs are dead, no classrooms, no lecture rooms. As at the time I graduated in 2006, 3000 students were struggling to get a seat in a 750 lecture theater. Imagine what is obtainable now. Students live in gross conditions and nothing is really taught especially in schools like OSU where they have all the sandwich programmes in the world. Someone that can't read and write can even get a degree from OSU.
Thats how someone told me on the travel section to be patrotic and keep flying belview to London. is it until I crash into the ocean before I stop being patrotic and admit that Belview's standard is bad.

I think I have one or two things to say concerning this issue. Schooling abroad has its advantages and disadvantages. Nigerians love to generalize by having the belief that all schools in Europe and America are perfect. That is not the case. There are a lot of rubbish colleges and ' Universities ' abroad. They exist solely for helping african and Asian students abroad. These schools are sometimes set up ontop of fish and chips and Halal shops. Don't be deceived. The UK Government has decided to get rid of these schools through a fresh registration and visa process. Many Nigerian students cannot afford the fees of the elite universities in the UK and US, so they settle for smaller colleges that charge low fees in the range of £1800 pounds to £4000. The proprietors of these colleges do not care about attendance of lectures. Just pay the deposit fee and they'll sort you out. When the time for exams come, everything will be arranged for you. Meanwhile, you will be working and living your life. Is this the kind of education you want? Search your soul, Nairalanders.

How about Nigerian students who pay deposit fees in the good universities and colleges, go for classes, write exams and graduate, but cannot pay the remaining balance of their expensive fees? Therefore they can't collect their certificates. Many of them have to stay back, get married to a citizen of the country they are studying in and work hard to pay off their debts to the schools. It takes years to pay off the debts, mates. This is because you have other daily bills and issues to pay and attend to. Its easier when you're on scholarship. My advice is you should aim to study abroad on scholarships. Except you come from a rich family or your parents are part of the thieving Nigerian political class. Things will be rosy for you then. Many Nigerian students have had their hopes dashed when they arrived in Britain or America for Post Graduate Studies. Start thinking.

if we are looking at quality we shouldn't even be talking about what country constitutes "abroad" because even Ghana's educational system is better than ours in terms of stability and being up-to-date; some universities in South Africa are even better than most universities in the UK and USA. I think the whole UK and USA thingy is overrated, there are so many schools in Africa that are better but what do you expect, ranking agencies are from the west, they don't even know what our schools look like but yet we've been ranked, they are bound to be bias and its all a propaganda to bring us to their countries to contribute more money to their economy.

The problem is that most Nigerians that go to the west to study never return to serve Nigeria, that is what I call a complete waste of our resources.

[b]Well, the term 'Abroad' has quite a broad interpretation.  People can interpret abroad differently.  It would have been nice if the poster had been specific in what he meant as 'abroad' because, once anyone leaves Nigerian soil or any country - they are abroad e.g. Cotonou and Togo down the road after our Badagary are also 'abroad' you know - laughs!  Or does he specifically mean, studying in the West or other part of the world? Well if that's what he meant, I should say it does you alot more 'good' studying abroad in terms of quality education, access to educational resources and it not only broadens your horizon but also gives you access to opportunities all over the world - by that I mean, connections to other foreign students/tutors you would have met/befriended whilst on the course and at the Uni in fact, the world is your oyster if you are a friendly type.  So, where you can't find work in your country there's a chance friends/college mates could hook you up with connections or something.  If there's no such thing as connection or Man know Man, why is the City of London full of Eton boys, Cambridge, Oxford and, UCL Graduates Why Man know man stands you know that and to get it you too have to be of good quality therefore, studying abroad is a good bet.  Secondly, if studying at home put us on  pedestal in life, why are Nigerian Head of State and, his Ministers educating their children abroad when they have all the power in their finger tips to reform our educational system but would not do it  I mean, sort out this messed up jungle of education we have in Nigeria? I mean create an environment were educators/teachers are respected, paid appropriately and on time and ensure teaching and learning resources are available to every school, college and Universities in this country - why can't they simply do that and stop wasting the life of young people on TEACHERS' STRIKES here in Nigeria? Imagine, it took almost 8 - 10 academic years for one of my relatives to graduate from a Nigerian University due to strike here and there when it should have taken him only 3 or 4 years to do so.  What a waste of young peoples time/life  -SHAME, SHAME AND SHAME!!!!!

So, if what you meant by studying abroad is, studying in any of these countries - UK, USA, Australia, Ireland, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine etc then, you are on the right track and you are making the right investment in your future and definitely would benefit from it however, there are sacrifices to be made especially in the UK.  All over the world, British education is respected, WHY?. Well, to some people it is not as acclaimed but people know that, by the time you acquire that 'Certificate' in your hand, you would never forget you journey to Mount Everest and back, I can assure you so, respect people who studied here and achieved it. 
You see, you don't mess with British education system, ok! It involves alot - your attendance record is 90% and no skiving here or you fail the course and asked to leave the University as some Universities operate a no re-submission or fail and out policy.  In addition, you have your course presentations as well as all your Essay submissions to do and on time and these essay can be as short as a 2000 word Essay, 5,000,10,000 or even 35,000 and more word dissertations.  What about your end of semester/final exams?  And shall we talk of those being viva'd which can take about the meanest 3hrs of your entire life where upon you are grilled, grilled and grilled on the topic of your chosen.  Look, you can't gain British education on the cheap, that's about it - you will work your backside off for that little white paper in your hand that's a surety! But hey, once you achieve it - boy you are on top of EVEREST because, it is an INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT IN IT'S SELF ask, and people will tell you and that's the difference with other countries of the world.  Although, Britain and America work hand in hand, you can not compare British education with that of America, period.  American system is so cheap and easy, like Nigeria, people can buy certificates, pay anyone to attend their lectures and, sit their exams for them in American hey, you can not do that nonesense in Britain again, the difference.  And these are the qualities respectable people and employers worldwide like about British education system and those who studied here hence, the PRIDE.  However, it does not mean that this system hasn't got its own drawbacks of course, it has but there are checks and balances in place to control some of these pitfalls e.g. anyone can write your essays for you but they can not sit your exams for you, they can not do your presentations for you and they can not attendance your lectures for you as these are integrated part of your course.  So, if you pass your essays, pass your presentations and exams but fail your attendance - boy, you FAILED the course and if your University runs a 'One strike, you are out' policy, then, you're done.  As you can see, you can run but you can not hide! Again, that's the difference.  Therefore, if you are considering foreign education, think seriously and always think UK first - aside, the high tuition fees, remember it's a life long investment in your future and that of your children. [b] Well, I quite disagree here.  In fact, it seems to me the person who said that does not understand Nigerian labour market at all.  If so, why are some Nigerian graduate job seekers on N/L here complaining that foreign educated Nigerian are now returning home to take their jobs and rightly so. The competition is in their favour anyway because, they have the skills, experience, training and discipline to do the job which Nigerian graduates haven't got and some of them are so bitter about it, why??  Who is stopping them? 

In spite of that, Nigerian companies continues to seek skilled/experienced employees abroad e.g. it has not been long a friend of mine was Head hunted from Nigeria for a Nigerian Bank and you bet your luck, the package is damn good and matched up to her skills/qualifications.  Another was hired to develop the Human Resource Dept. of another Bank but left after six month service because, Nigerian employees lacked discipline.  Except in Nigerian, everywhere you go in civilized world including some African countries, employees in most companies observe 'One hour lunch breaks' but not in Nigeria.  How, could employees of a Bank spend 2-3 hours on lunch break and expect their source of income to be prosperous/thrive well? Even, the Prime Ministers and Presidents of this world do not take such long lunch break, do they? Let alone, ordinary bank clerks, hmmm!  You people that end, make me laugh!  With employees like these, how could such a bank survive in this day of global financial crisis? And there you have Nigerians crying we haven't go jobs, we haven't got jobs and the one you had - you could not take proper care of it.  To be honest, Nigerians are not serious in their need for helped.  So, whether we like it or not foreign educated Nigerians will always gain the juicy, respectable and well paid jobs with expatriate packages on top of it before home buddies could wake up, honest.  So, stop fooling yourselves![/b]
