The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, was on June 21,appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police by President Muhammadu Buhari.He succeeded Solomon Arase who retired today after 35 years in service.Below are top 9 things to know about the Nigeria new IGP Idris.


1.Mr. Idris has two academic degrees of law and agriculture at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and University of Maiduguri

.2. He had also attended different courses and trainingin Nigeria and abroad and participated in several peace keeping missions in many countries across the world


.3. The new IGP began his police career in 1984 when he became Cadet ASP after which he was posted as Gusau Police Divisional Crime Officer in 1986 and later Unit Commander 7 PMFSokoto between 1987 and 1989.


4. He also served as police commissioner in Nasarawa state

.5. CP Idris was raised up to the rank of Deputy Police Commissioner Operations and Second in Command at the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor Leste UNMIT between 2009 to April 2011


.6. In July 2011 he was appointed Kano state commissioner of police, a position he held until February 2013.

7. In February 2013 the police officer was selected to attend Senior Police Officers Course at Nigeria Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Kuru (NIPSS) where he obtained the prestigious mni membership.


8.Idris revoked the community policing scheme which attracted many people to actively take part in the fight against crime.


9.Until his appointment by President Buhari, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of federal operations in Abuja., He was appointed in April, 2015 by the immediate past president Goodluck Jonathan.
