Nigeria Boko Haram: Scores of refugees starved to death - MSF

This is Friggin 2016 There is no excuse for letting these people starve to death in Nigeria!!

Nearly 200 refugees fleeing Boko Haram militants have starved to death over the past month in Bama, Nigeria, the medical charity MSF says.

A "catastrophic humanitarian emergency" is unfolding at a camp it visited where 24,000 people have taken refuge.

Many inhabitants are traumatised and one in five children is suffering from acute malnutrition, MSF says.

It quoted inhabitants as saying about 30 people died every day due to hunger or illness.

Although the area has been unsafe to travel through, MSF says one of its teams reached Bama on Tuesday.

It went in with a military convoy from the city of Maiduguri in Borno state.

The Islamist group's seven-year rebellion has left 20,000 people dead and more than two million displaced.

'I almost became suicide bomber'

Nigeria's military has carried out a large-scale offensive against them but Boko Haram still attacks villages in the north-east, destroying homes and burning down wells.

Displaced people in Bama say new graves are appearing on a daily basis, according to a statement from MSF.

Horrifying images show the plight of children in Nigeria amid warning 50,000 could die from starvation this year after being made homeless by Boko Haram

Shocking photographs have revealed the plight of the children starving in Nigeria after they and their families were made homeless by Boko Haram.

The tiny babies and toddlers are so thin that their bones can be seen clearly against their skin, as medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned that the country is facing 'a catastrophic humanitarian emergency'.

Despite pledges from Nigeria to do more to tackle the food shortages among the internally displaced people (IDPs), the United Nations has said that some 50,000 children could starve to death this year in the northeastern state of Borno alone.

At least 188 people died in the camp in Bama between May 23 and June 22, mainly from diarrhoea and malnutrition, while more than 1,200 graves, many of them for children, have been dug near the camp in the last year, MSF said last week.

Desperate: A series of shocking images has revealed the extent of the food shortages facing internally displaced people in Nigeria. Pictured, a young girl suffering from severe acute malnutrition getting weighed at one of the Unicef nutrition clinics

Tragedy: The United Nations warned that some 50,000 children will have died by the end of the year if nothing is done to alleviate the issue

Upsetting: People living in the camp for displaced people in Bama have been made homeless by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram

A Nigerian government delegation, that visited Bama to see conditions for the 25,000 people living there, described it as 'an overwhelming situation for any government to handle'.

'We will go back and make reports and soon there will be some relief, more relief coming this way.'

Domestic and international aid agencies rely on the military to drive to 45 miles from the state capital Maiduguri to Bama, which was liberated in March.

Roads in to and out of Maiduguri are nominally open but vehicles are still vulnerable to attack from the Islamist militants, who have been pushed into the bush by the military since January 2015.

Many displaced people from in and around Bama are currently staying in camps and host communities in Maiduguri.

Starving: In just one month in the camp for the internally displaced, at least 188 people died, mainly from diarrhoea and malnutrition

Terrible: A Nigerian government delegation, that visited Bama to see conditions for the 25,000 people living there, described it as 'an overwhelming situation for any government to handle'

Help: Domestic and international aid agencies rely on the military to drive to 45 miles from the state capital Maiduguri to Bama, which was liberated in March.

Hunger: Maryam Uwais, special advisor to President Muhammadu Buhari for social protection, said: 'The state government has done its best. We came to see things for ourselves. We came to see things for ourselves'

Children: Many of those suffering in the camp are children who, along with their families, were forced from their homes by Boko Haram

Warning: The United Nations has said that some 50,000 children could starve to death this year in the northeastern state of Borno alone

Spreading: Even more people in urgent need of assistance are being discovered as hard-to-reach remote locations are opened up

MSF's claims angered the Nigerian government, and Borno state health commissioner Haruna Mshelia dismissed reports of severe acute malnutrition at the Bama camp as exaggerated.

But he said some 1,800 of the most vulnerable had been evacuated to Maiduguri for special treatment and feeding.

The United Nations said in a statement on Thursday that its agencies and partners in northeast Nigeria were 'reporting high levels of severe malnutrition and desperate conditions' in recently liberated areas.

'Improving security has enabled humanitarians to access areas that were previously cut off,' said acting UN humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria Munir Safieldin.
'The conditions we are seeing there are devastating,' he added, demanding 'a much faster and wider response'.

More people in urgent need of assistance are being discovered as hard-to-reach remote locations are opened up and UNICEF Nigeria representative Jean Gough had a stark warning if nothing was done.

Bleak: A displaced mother with her malnurished child in Bama's camp for internally displaced people (IDP), on the outskirts of Maiduguri

Vulnerable: Women and children waiting in a queue to visit one of the Unicef nutrition clinics, in the Muna informal settlement, which houses nearly 16,000 people

Violence: The seven-year Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria has killed at least 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.6million

Problems: The violence has left communities destroyed and farmland devastated, also hitting the supply of food to markets, driving up costs for people already robbed of their livelihoods

Shelter: A woman sits in the shade of her makeshift hut, in the Muna informal settlement, which houses nearly 16,000 IDPs on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State

Community: Men living in the camp join together to build a shelter for a family in the informal settlement of Muna, near to Maiduguri

Suffering: Local authorities are facing increasing pressure as ever greater numbers of people in desperate need of help are discovered as more hard-to-reach areas are liberated

'We estimate that there will be almost a quarter of a million children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno this year,' she said in a statement.

'Unless we reach these children with treatment, one in five of them will die. We cannot allow that to happen.'

The seven-year Boko Haram insurgency has killed at least 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.6million, with a new influx heaping pressure on local authorities.

Food insecurity and malnutrition has reached emergency levels, the Nigerian government said on Monday, and more than 500,000 people require immediate food assistance.

The violence has left communities destroyed and farmland devastated, also hitting the supply of food to markets, driving up costs for people already robbed of their livelihoods.

America Laments: Nigerians dying of starvation in their own country

The American government has urged its Nigerian counterpart and other partners to redouble efforts at ending the humanitarian crisis in the insurgency-ravaged North-East geopolitical zone.

The outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, said more needed to be done on the humanitarian front particularly as Nigerians were dying of starvation in their own country.

Nigeria is oil-rich and is the largest exporter of crude in Africa. Yet majority of its citizens are poor, living on less than a dollar a day, mainly due to corruption and misgovernance.

Reports recently emerged from the North-East that starvation deaths had become rampant in some Internally Displaced Persons camps in the region.

Mr. Entwistle, who spoke at the 240th United States Independence Anniversary celebration cocktail party in Abuja, said there was an urgent need to arrest the situation, and that his country was willing to help.

“As you fight Boko Haram and secure and rebuild the Northeast, and you strive for harmony in the Niger Delta and across the land, we will continue to help in every appropriate way,” the ambassador said.

“Indeed, let us redouble our efforts on the humanitarian front in the Northeast. Nigerians are dying of starvation in Nigeria.”

The ambassador said the Obama administration remained committed to standing with Nigeria in its fight against corruption, particularly by ensuring no stolen funds are laundered through the American banking system......

Please, people should stop using the name of the suffering of people in the Biafran war and the many that starved to death to justify the starving of innocent children in any part of Nigeria. I know the suffering of the Biafran people, not the politics, possibly more than most people that post about it on here. While my people suffered and some starved to death and had Kwashiorkor , the parents of many of those that like to post on Biafra issues fled the country.

The bragging about Biafra on here and on the media online generally is nothing but the frustrated political ambitions of selfish individuals! No igbo person is being exploited in Nigeria right now more than any other group of Nigerians so you people should stop!

Last week, the United Nations announced that tens of thousands of Nigerian children in the north east will die of malnutrition this year, unless they receive treatment soon. Making this announcement after a visit to Internally Displaced Persons camps in parts of the country blighted by the Boko Haram menace, the UN delegation, led by Munir Safieldin, its humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria, called the conditions of these towns “devastating.” The relative slow reaction to this news can be described with the same word, devastating.

Malnutrition is a lack of proper nutrition caused by not having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right groups of food in adequate quantities, or the body’s inability to utilise what is being eaten. Malnourishment is also the prime cause of death of 50 percent of children under five and women in Nigeria, according to UNICEF. Now, that number is set to increase after the findings of the UN on Friday. “Almost 250,000 children under the age of five in Borno state will suffer from malnutrition this year,” Jean Gough of Nigeria’s UNICEF office said.

The fact that a potential humanitarian crisis has been going on for months in northern Nigeria with little awareness in the media, suggests apathy from the Nigerian government. For the government, as long as it doesn’t put the politics in Nigeria in their favour, they are not concerned, and for the citizens, a certain as-long-as-it-is-not-near-my-home attitude marks this lack of empathy for the IDPs.

Many of the afflicted towns were ravaged and then lost to the Boko Haram scourge before their liberation by the Nigerian Army some months after. The liberation started on the tail end of Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and gained momentum after Muhammadu Buhari’s inauguration. However, bomb attacks by the sect continued in the area up until early 2016 but, the people affected had stopped receiving any attention from the rest of Nigeria by this time. This is very different from the general anger in reaction to the killings perpetrated by Boko Haram in the region, used to push Goodluck Jonathan away from the presidency back in 2015, suggesting that the war on Boko Haram had been politicised then and still is. Jonathan’s reaction to the Chibok girl kidnappings is also an example of how apathetic the Nigerian government can be, delaying their rescue simply because he thought it was the machination of his political opponents. The #BringBackOurGirls campaign also began like this, a wildfire of protests, that started as a flame among a few concerned people, spreading all over the world, before coming back to ignite other Nigerians who had apparently just woken up to their responsibilities. With the placards and posters then, most of the campaign appeared to be a publicity stunt and not genuine heartbreak to the plight of those girls. That is why it seems only a few groups are still clamouring for their return today

The Federal Government announced, earlier this year, for IDPs to return home, seemingly to make a statement that it was winning the war on Boko Haram. If these were the conditions they returned to, then it’s no surprise why more misinformed fighters are joining the terrorist group.

Now, the issue has taken a new dimension. The United Nations is mobilizing us to help our own people, which seems ironic since it’s usually the citizens of a country who call outsiders for help. Thousands of children could die from malnutrition but there’s been very little reaction from the Nigerian government and the citizens, especially since the announcements made last week. Boko Haram drafts new members in by offering them monetary incentives and a feeling of belonging. Crises like these birthed the terrorist problem and Nigeria would do well to nip this fundamental issue in the bud now, as opposed to putting things off until the last minute.

SHOCKING! ‘250,000 children’ severely malnourished in Borno

About a quarter of a million children are severely malnourished in Borno state, and face a high risk of death, according to UNICEF.

The organisation also lamented the extent of the nutrition crisis as a rsult of humanitarian crisis caused by the Boko Haram emergency.

As more areas in the north-east become accessible to humanitarian assistance, the extent of the nutrition crisis affecting children is becoming even more apparent.

The UN children’s agency urged all partners to join the humanitarian response and donors to urgently provide resources.

Out of the 244,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno, an estimated 49,000 children – almost 1 in 5 – will die if they are not reached with treatment.

“Some 134 children on average will die every day from causes linked to acute malnutrition if the response is not scaled up quickly,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF regional director for Western and Central Africa.

Nigeria Boko Haram: Children starving, warns Unicef

19 July 2016

Almost a quarter of a million children in parts of Nigeria's Borno state formerly controlled by Boko Haram are suffering from severe malnutrition, the UN children's agency says.

Reference:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-36831225

Tens of thousands will die if treatment does not reach them soon, Unicef warns.

In areas where Boko Haram militants had been in control, it found people without water, food or sanitation.

Last month, a charity said people fleeing Boko Haram had starved to death.

The Islamist group's seven-year rebellion has left 20,000 people dead and more than two million displaced.

Nigeria's military is involved in a large-scale offensive against the group.

Unicef says that as more areas in north-eastern Nigeria become accessible to humanitarian help, the extent of the nutrition crisis affecting children is becoming more apparent.

It said that of the 244,000 children found to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno, almost one in five would die if they were not reached with treatment.

"Some 134 children on average will die every day from causes linked to acute malnutrition if the response is not scaled up quickly," said Manuel Fontaine, Unicef's Regional Director for Western and Central Africa.

"We need all partners and donors to step forward to prevent any more children from dying. No-one can take on a crisis of this scale alone."

Mr Fontaine said he had seen destroyed towns accommodating displaced people and thousands of frail children in desperate need of help.

"There are two million people we are still not able to reach in Borno state, which means that the true scope of this crisis has yet to be revealed to the world," he added.

"There are organisations on the ground doing great work, but none of us are able to work at the scale and quality that we need. We must all scale up."

MSF said in June that a "catastrophic humanitarian emergency" was unfolding at one camp in Bama, Borno state, where 24,000 people had taken refuge.

Many inhabitants were traumatised and one in five children was suffering from acute malnutrition, it said.
