Opinion: States And Performances Of Their Governors From 1999 To Date by Nobody: 10:16am On Jul 08, 2016
Saw this Piece On Stephen Akuma WordPress page and atleast i would say he was spot on with the my state Ogun and From the little time i spent in Akwa Ibom during service and i quite agree with him but wouldn't know if you do about your respective states.

VERDICT: States and the Performance of their Governors from 1999 to date

ABIA: Orji Kalu was nick-named roadmaster after he hurriedly constructed roads in Abia state in 1999. These low-quality roads were later washed off within 1 year of construction. He performed woefully and handed over to the worst Governor in the history of Nigeria, Theodore Orji. Orji wasted Abia’s money for 8 years. The present Governor, Ikpeazu is showing some prospect of becoming a great Governor.

ADAMAWA: From 8 years waste of Boni Haruna to 8 years waste of Admiral Nyako. Though Nyako invested in farming and technical training of the youths, the project, however, did not produce the needed results. I heard Gov. Bindo has started constructing some roads.

ANAMBRA: After the woeful performance of Gov. Mbadinuju (Odera), Dr. Ngige fought the cabal holding the State to ransom and gave the State back to the people. Then Peter Obi developed the State in all sectors and Gov. Obianu has continued in this path of development. Anambra is a model State that the world will one-day study and learn from its developmental initiative.

AKWA IBOM: Gov. Attah was an average Governor. Akpabio took the State to the next level in terms of development. Although pundits argue that he lavishly spent the States money on donations to stamp his name politically at the national level. The present Governor seems not to know his left from his right. He waits for an instruction from Sen. Akpabio.

BAUCHI: One of the Best Governors in terms of infrastructural development was Adamu Muazu. He performed well and handed over to Isa Yaguda who wasted 8 years doing very little. The present Governor, Abubakar is yet to take off.

BAYELSA: A small State that is very rich in terms of FAAC allocation but has been bedevilled by bad leaders. From Alams to Goodluck to Sylva to Dickson, all waste. This State should be merged with another State for that area to be developed.

BENUE: Hmmm… this one… the State experienced good Governance between 1979 to 1983 and between 1993 to 1994. That is it! From 1999 to date, it is just waste. Although Suswam started well but he ended badly. Akume only empowered some few people with cash and the present Governor has asked the citizens to look up to God for help. As I am writing this, the people’s eyes are set in heaven in anticipation of the Messiah.

BORNO: From wasted 4 years of Gov. Mala Kachalla to wasted 8 years of Ali Modu Sherrif to wasted 5 years Gov. Shettima. They (Sherrif’s government) used their hands to create Boko Haram and they are living with the consequence of their creation.

CROSS-RIVER: The State became a tourism hub under Donald Duke’s tenure as Governor. Obudu Cattle Ranch, Tinapa and Calabar Christmas festival were established to promote tourism. Duke performed very well. Unlike Duke who focused on tourism and developing the State capital, Gov Imoke focused on the rural areas. He connected most of the rural areas to the urban areas with good roads, he also pumped money into the education sector to curtail the falling standard of education in the State. Gov. Benedict Ayade has set up some projects aimed at making Calabar a mega city. He completed the monorail started by Duke. However, some pundits perceive some of his projects as white elephant projects, considering the dwindling FAAC allocation to the State. This State is next to Anambra in steady development.

DELTA: James Ibori stole a lot of money from the State but he also developed the State to some level. He focused more on his hometown, turning it into a city overnight. Gov. Uduaghan, a cousin to Ibori performed woefully in his 8 years rule. The present governor, Okowa is under the control of Ibori and Tompolo. Ibori (in prison in the UK) made him the Governor while Tompolo single-handedly installed the Deputy Governor who is his cousin. I doubt if Gov. Okowa can perform well under this type of arrangement.

EBONYI: Sam Egwu wasted 8 years in Ebonyi doing nothing. At a point, he spent most part of his tenure as Governor fighting Sen. Pius Anyim who is his political rival. He handed over to Gov. Martin Elechi who also performed woefully. The present Governor, David Umahi seems not to know what to do.

ENUGU: Gov. Chimaroke Nnamani faced opposition from different interest groups. Shortly into his first term, he fell out with his Godfather, Jim Nwobodo and Fr. Mbaka did not give him breathing space. Despite the opposition, he still performed averagely. He moved ESUT to the permanent site and he executed some projects, though most were in his Senatorial district. Governor Sullivan Chime rode on the ‘Ebano family’ to become Governor. When Chimaroke chose him as his successor, it almost brought a crack into the “Ebano family” because he was relatively unknown, and prominent members of the family like Sen Ekeremadu were eyeing the seat. Gov. Chime also fell out with Chimaroke and ruled without a Godfather. He performed well in terms of road construction. I doubt if anything good can come out of. Gov. Ugwuanyi. He is yet to take off.

EDO: Gov. Lucky Igbinedion is one of the worst things that have happened to Edo State. He emptied the State’s treasury, leaving the people to suffer for 8 years. Gov. Osunbor started well but he was sacked by the Court. Adams Oshiomole first term was good. He tried to justify the confidence bestowed on him but his second term’s performance is far below average. He even collected loans running into millions of dollars, thereby leaving the State in debt.

EKITI: Gov. Niyi Adebayo did nothing, Segun Oni did little . Fayemi ruled as if he was ruling people in the US and Europe. His policies were seen as elitist and he did not connect with the masses. This cost him his seat. Fayemi also borrowed so much money and the State is paying the price for his financial recklessness. Ayo Fayose knows his people very well and he knows how to connect with them. He will continue to remain relevant and popular among Ekiti people but the State may suffer. Although he is promoting stomach infrastructure, he is still carrying out some developmental projects with the little money available.

GOMBE: Gombe is another shining State in terms of development. Gov. Hashidu performed below average and Gov. Danjuma Goje really tried in developing the State. He built roads, the State University, Water projects, Stadium etc. Governor Dankwambo continued with this developmental initiative. He completed the Stadium which his predecessor began, and constructed more road projects. He is also developing other sectors of the State.

IMO: Since after Gov. Mbakwe, the State is yet to get an excellent Governor. Achike Udenwa performed below average. Ohakim started well with his ‘clean and green’ programme which won him some awards but he later performed woefully and he was ousted by the people. Rochas Okorocha had a potential to lead Nigeria. He has a strong connection in the North; he is the Danchikan Sokoto. He also runs free education schools across the country. A lot of young people look up to him but he has performed below average as Imo State Governor. Though he started well and even declared free education up to tertiary level, he is steadily retrogressing in his performance. To cap it all, he used State funds to build the tallest Christmas tree in Africa in Owerri; a project that has no economic benefit to the people.

JIGAWA: SaminuTaruki became a multimillionaire under Abacha’s government at a very young age. He used his money to buy his way into Jigawa State government house. Like a spoilt child, he spent the State’s money like his personal money and left the State undeveloped after 8 years. The arrogant Gov. Sule Lamido did little; he built an Airport in the State that was not necessary. He spent most part of his tenure strategizing on how to become President of Nigeria to the detriment of the poor people in his State. The Present Governor, Badaru Ababukar rode on the “Sai Buhari” movement to become Governor. I doubt if he knows what governance is.

KADUNA: Gov Ahmed Makarfi performed well in terms of infrastructural development. He was the bridge connecting Southern and Northern Kaduna. Gov. Sambo performed well in terms of security in the State and transportation; he resuscitated the moribund Kaduna trains. Gov. Yakowa performed very well in developing Northern Kaduna perhaps to win their support. He did little in Southern Kaduna. Gov. Yaro was really a “yaro”. He was totally not in the know of what to do. Gov. El-Rufai has set up a mechanism to make Kaduna a mega-State. All his policies from the biometric registration of staff to the school feeding programme are backed with a good statistical plan. He has a good team and he knows what he is doing.

KANO: The first coming of Rabiu Kwankwaso was very good. He rapidly developed the State in all sectors, connecting the rural areas to the urban areas with a good road network. Gov. Shekarau took over and he used religion to deceive the people, knowing that Kano is a very religious State. Instead of continuing with the developmental initiative of Kwankwaso, he built Mosques and Islamia schools in the 44 LGAs. It was in the tail end of his second term that he built some roads and embarked on the water project. The second coming of Kwankwaso was also good. In fact, if he had stayed longer, he would have turned Kano into Dubai. In terms of infrastructural development, he remains one of the best Governors in the country. The present Governor, Ganduje is finding it difficult to continue with the pace of development.

KATSINA: Musa Yara’dua performed very well especially in building model schools in all LGAs. He governed transparently and left billions of naira for his successor. Shama also tried in developing the State. Masari is yet to take off. He is more concerned in naming buildings after President Buhari than governing the state well.

KEBBI: Gov. Adamu Aliero and Gov. Dankigari performed far below average. The present Governor, Atiku Bagudu is performing well in terms of Agriculture. Kebbi State is now a leading rice producer in the country. The Lagos State government even signed a memorandum of understanding with Kebbi state for the supply of rice.

KOGI: Only Prince Abubakar Audu governed well in terms of infrastructural development though he stole the State’s money. He built the Kogi State University in his first term and built good roads. Gov. Ibrahim (Ibro), a businessman was invited into politics because he has money. He wasted 8 years increasing the poverty in the State. He handed over to another misfit, Captain Idris Wada. Idris wasted 5 years doing nothing. The present young man, Gov. Bello is still basking in the euphoria of the situation that led to his emergence as Governor. He is hardly in the State; always oscillating to and fro like a simple pendulum bulb from Kogi to Abuja, welcoming the President back from foreign trips and hovering around Aso Rock. Someone should tell this young man that he is now the Governor of the State and he should sit down in his State and develop it. The State House of Assembly is still under lock and key and the press has turned a blind eye to this impunity.

KWARA: The monarchy arrangement of Kwara from Olusola Saraki to Bukola Saraki is the reason for the underdevelopment of the State. Gov. Lawal could not do much since he was under the control of Olusola Saraki. When Lawal rebelled against Saraki Snr, he was ousted and replaced with Saraki Jnr and the dynasty continued. Bukola Saraki started some developmental initiative that didn’t produce any result. He brought in white farmers from Zimbabwe and gave them land for mechanised farming; he also started a football academy but nothing meaningful came out of these initiatives. He handed over to his friend, Abdulfatah who is more of a surrogate of Saraki. From Lawal to Saraki to Abdulfatah, it is just waste and corruption.

LAGOS: Eko is supposed to be a mega-State so the development should reflect its status. Construction of short roads shouldn’t be seen as a big achievement. For this reason, I can say Tinubu was an average Governor and Fashola was a slightly above average Governor. The fact that Tinubu and Fashola still travel abroad for medical check-up is an indication that they didn’t perform very well. Ambode has the potential of becoming an excellent Governor if he keeps faith with his plans. His plans to establish two additional seaports, build an independent power plant, construct the 4th mainland bridge are developmental plans that reflect the status of Eko as a mega-State.

NASARAWA: Gov. Abdullahi Adamu tried in developing the State. Governor Aliyu Doma performed woefully and the present Governor, Al-Makura performed averagely in his first term in office but he has become very arrogant and a dictator in his second term. The State receives the smallest amount from FAAC so one can understand its slow pace of development. The State has a potential to develop quicker if there is no corruption, considering the amount of money it makes from IGR in areas like Maraba, Ado, Masaka, Keffi and Lafia.

NIGER: Gov. Kure performed below average. The billboard Governor, Babangida Aliyu spent his time erecting billboards of his face in every nook and cranny of the State. He also bamboozled the people with his big-big grammar and sweet talk. Before the people could realise, it was already 8 years of waste. Someone should please wake the present Governor, Sani Bello and remind him that he is now the Governor of the State.

OGUN: Osoba and Gbenga Daniels performed below average. Amosun raised the State to a level in terms of infrastructural development. He has built roads and bridges.

ONDO: Adefarati and Agagu performed below average. Mimiko (Iroko) took the State to the next level. He is a silent achiever. His model primary schools, roads, and other social amenities are evidence of his achievements.

OSUN: Akande’s performance was just there, I will say below average. Oyinlola was also below average. Aregbesola came in with a planless populist policy. His first two years in office was okay with his “oponImo” this and “oponImo” that. He later ran out of cash and started borrowing. Aregbesola appears more like a religious extremist and his actions and policies have put a once peaceful State into a religious crisis.

OYO: Gov. Lam Adesina performed below average but he protected his people when the Fulani Herdsmen invaded them. This made the “core” Northerners to send a delegation led by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to warn him. After Adesina, Oyo people experienced Amala politics under the strongman of Ibadan, Adedibu who sponsored two Governors, Ladoja, and Alao-Akala. They both performed woefully. The present Governor, Ajimobi performed averagely in his first term but he is trying to make education expensive by selling the government-owned schools to private bodies. Ironically, the same man benefited from the free education programme of Awolowo.

PLATEAU: It was a wasted 8 years under Joshua Dariye, though he shared money like his Benue State counterpart. His political rivalry with Sen. Ibrahim Mantu, the then Deputy Senate President fuelled the Jos crisis in the early 2000s. The crisis was more political than religious. Gov. Michael Botmang was just a temporal governor that did nothing. Jonah Jang is known for road construction. Although he didn’t perform well in other sectors, he opened up plateau State with good roads. The present governor, Simon Lalong is more interested in creating grazing reserves in the State for Fulani Herdsmen than governing the State well.

RIVERS: Peter Odili spent good money on propaganda. At the National level, he appeared as the best Governor but at the State level, he performed below average. His tenure was characterised by cult killings. Celestine Omehia didn’t achieve anything before the court sacked him. There were cult killings everywhere in Rivers State during his tenure as Governor. Amaechi brought calm to Rivers State. The cult killings ceased under his tenure. His first term was excellent, he built roads, model schools, cleaned up PorthHarcourt etc. His second term was not as good as his first term probably because of the in-house fighting in his former party. One thing I feel he regrets about is the uncompleted Monorail – a white elephant project. Nyesom Wike has rehabilitated roads in PortHarcourt but cult killings have resurfaced again. People now call the State, Rivers of blood. Wike has also borrowed billions of naira with nothing tangible to show.

SOKOTO: Attahiru Bafarawa performed below average. Aliyu Wamakko took the State to the next level in terms of development. Aminu Tambuwal as a former teacher has improved the welfare of teachers in the State. He is planning to build teachers quarters in every LGA of State. He is hardly in his State. He is always in Abuja and other States in the South, Strategizing to become President in 2019.

TARABA: Another State bedevilled with bad leaders. From the extravagant Jolly Nyame to the Sick Danbaba Suntai, all waste. The present Governor, Darius Ishaku has also taken the path of waste. He appointed more than 60 personal assistants. He is, however, doing his best in terms of security in State by reducing the ethnic tension in the State. He has also constructed some State roads.

YOBE: Bukar Abba Ibrahim spent 8 years doing very little. He only succeeded in making the State his personal property. The State University is named after him, his wife was a 2 term member of House of Rep. He is a three term Senator, his wife is now a Minister. Sen. Mamman Ali tried his best before his sudden death. Ibrahim Geidam is doing little or nothing in the State.

ZAMFARA: Ahmed Yerima increased the tempo of religious extremism in the country when he launched the political sharia. He used it to dupe the Arab world to get donations and he later used the money given to him by the Arabs for his presidential campaign. He performed woefully and increased the poverty level in the State. Gov. Shinkafi also performed below average. The present Governor, Yari is always in Abuja. Sometimes I wonder if he wants to be made the FCT minister. His people are suffering and he is just perambulating around Aso Rock.

FCT: Apart Mallam Nasir El-Rufai who performed excellently, the other FCT ministers were just there for their person interest. They did nothing in developing the federal capital.

Speaking as someone who has travelled and seen things, none of these ex and present governors are performing except maybe obiano. I wonder what nigerians think performance is. Commisioning street lights is not performance. If to say na to treat all the phuq up wey these people phuq, na rochas phuq up i go first treat. Imagine erecting a worthless christmas tree with millions of tax payers money but was and still owing workers and pensioners.
