Every employee are expendable when their value depreciate, while some employee are asset. Companies will always keep their asset.
Not in Nigeria, you are expendable if you don't have connection

You are expendable if you are not related to the CEO.

You are expendable when the coy no longer make profit

You are expendable even if the CEO is your brother or have all the right connection when you lack competence except you are not handling sensitive position. On the other hand you are unexpendable when you are making profit for the company, when you ideas are what moving the company to the next level even if you are the son of nobody.

I used to believe this "No connection no job" mentality but i have seen people over and over again with no connection get good high paying jobs just because they have what it takes to do the job. Even the people with connection the kind of jobs they give them are no sensitive positions, jobs that anybody can do that don't really require much skill. Every company is set up to make profit except NGO's, so i don't think any CEO would want to employ his brother for a position that's key to their business success when he know that his brother lack the skill and the competence to manage the position.

Another to keep in mind is that your skill and competence can get you a job but that's not enough to take your far in your career. This why networking is a key in career success, you need to be able to create good relationship with the right people..

7. Brand yourself

Try to brand yourself in a productive way by sending out articles to people in the organization that you know will find it useful, volunteer to be part of a committee that a senior colleague is on, express your opinion when appropriate in the meeting.

Exactly what I'm currently working on!

An employee is not a slave to an employer. If you are not okay with the working condition, you are very free to quit. There are always better opportunities. ..
