On Monday, in trial firing at the Pokhran Ranges in Rajasthan, the advanced towed artillery gun system (ATAGS) being indigenously developed for the IA demonstrated its potential.

The 155-millimetre, 52-calibre gun-howitzer fired three shells out to a world-record distance of 47.2 kilometres from the gun position. This was achieved using special, long-range ammunition called “high explosive – base bleed” (HE – BB). In comparison, 155-millimetre, 52-calibre guns in service worldwide fire this ammunition to maximum ranges of 40-45 kilometres.

Earlier, on Saturday, the same gun had broken another record by firing “high explosive – boat tail” (HE – BT) ammunition to a range of 37.2 kilometres.

Range, accuracy and consistency are the key attributes of an artillery gun. A longer range allows more area to be engaged from a “gun position”, without having to redeploy (or shift) the guns.

The secret of the ATAGS longer range is its larger chamber – 25 litres, compared to 23 litres in most 155-millimetre guns. A larger chamber packs in more high explosive propellant, which shoots out the warhead further.

After the gun successfully completes development and firing trials, the army is likely to procure at least 2,000 ATAGS. At an estimated Rs 15 crore apiece, that will result in Rs 30,000 crore in business for the production eco-system, benefiting a large number of private defence firms.

With the current round of “summer trials” having successfully concluded in Pokhran, the ATAGS will now undergo modifications and prepare for “winter trials” in December, probably in Sikkim. Each vendor will build three more ATAGs gun prototypes to expedite trials.

Another global first in the ATAGS is its all-electric drive, which supersedes the more unreliable hydraulic drives in other towed guns. The all-electric drive operates all the ATAGS’ gun controls: ammunition handling, opening and closing the breech, and ramming the round into the chamber.

The ATAGS is the world’s only gun with a six-round “automated magazine” that fires a six-round burst in just 30 seconds. Most other existing 155-millimetre, 52-calibre guns have three-round magazines, which must be reloaded after firing three rounds.

A high “burst fire” capability will provide the army a significant advantage since artillery causes most casualties in the initial burst of fire, when enemy soldiers are caught in the open (and not after they dive into their trenches).

South African G6 holds the record for highest range using V-LAP round.
what about the barrel wear?? since higher explosive force will distort the barrel over time...

what about the barrel wear?? since higher explosive force will distort the barrel over time...

this is one of the main design criteria of any artillery gun which needs to be solved before rolling out prototypes smiley

in ATAGS for barrel manufacturing various technologies was realized/involved as follows

1.Clean steel process for steel e.g. Electro Slag Refined (ESR) plant - for better fatigue life of the steel

2.Forging technology - for preparation of forging from clean steel (e.g. ESR steel) ingot

3.Autofrettaging - to reduce the barrel weight and to enhance the life of the barrel. The differential autofrettaging (hydraulic) is more advantageous over other autofrettaging processes.

Hydraulic Autofrettaging process has the following advantages:

(i) Check soundness of the barrel material
(ii) Reduces weight to strength ratio
(iii) Enhances linear elastic limit of the material
(iv) Increases bore surface hardness due to work hardening during autofrettaging
(v) Increases higher stress bearing capacity without increasing in wall thickness of the barrel, etc.

4.Shape optimization technique to reduce the wear resistance of the bore

5.Thermal management and surface engineering to enhance the wear life of the barrel

6.The following methods are used to enhance the wear life of the barrel (by reducing the heat input to the barrel) and reducing the wear.

(a)Chrome plating
(b)Coating of functionally graded material
(c)Coating of tantalum by magneto sputtering method
(d)Laser hardening

nevertheless every artillery gun has a barrel life so it needs to be replaced after the mandated rounds have been fired from it.

ATAGS is being developed by DRDO , TATA , BHARAT FORGE (Kalyani Group)

BHARAT FORGE is the worlds largest forging company with clients in US, Europe , Japan , South Korea , middle east , Africa etc.

The Kalyani Autonomous Rover called ECARS – Enhanced Collaborative Autonomous Rover System had made its debut at the 2016 DefExpo in Goa. Developed in-house by the India-based Kalyani Group, the new rover can be used for mine detection, bomb disposal, perimeter security, operation in a hazardous environment, and so on.

Featuring characteristics of an ATV, the Autonomous Rover can also be controlled remotely using a computer and gaming stick, as shown in the image below.

Kalyani Autonomous Rover (ECARS) is a 4 wheeled ATV with a skid-steer mechanism and autonomous operation using video motion sensors. It also features enhanced collision avoidance system, threat analysis, learning & mission planning. Built on a multi-functional and multi-sensor platform, Kalyani Autonomous Rover (ECARS) is capable of multi-tasking.

Tha all-terrain amphibious vehicle derives power from a battery-powered electric motor. It can last for up to 6 hours in silent mode. In manual mode (when operated by a human remotely), it has a top speed of 20 kmph, while in the autonomous mode it has a top speed of up to 15 kmph. Climbing capability stands at max 45 degrees slope.

Operating temperature ranges from -40 degrees C to +40 degrees C. Highlights are – easy to use, economical and low maintenance.

The design of X-band T/R modules package also known as "planks" have been realized locally and patented by LRDE DRDO.

They're 3 variants of this plank

4 T/R module
6 T/R module
8 T/R module

UTTAM AESA MMR's antenna array has Total 184 Planks (each with 4 T/R modules ) so

Total T/R Modules = 184*4=736
