Ex-aide to former Chinese President Hu Jintao, was sentenced to life in prison Monday for corruption, abuse of power and illegally obtaining state secrets, according to state news media, amid a government crackdown on targets in the ruling Communist Party.

State-run China Central Television aired a clip that day of Ling calmly telling a court in Tianjin that he accepted all charges.

The court determined that Ling and his family received 77.08 million yuan ($11.5 million) in bribes. He also was found guilty of illegally obtaining many state secrets during his tenure as vice chair of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and as head of the Communist Party's United Front Work Department. Ling has been stripped of political rights for life, and his assets were confiscated.

The trial held June 7 was closed to the public in consideration of the state secrets in question, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Ling decided not to appeal the decision.

Bo Xilai, the former party secretary in Chongqing, and former Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang also were jailed for life under President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign.

A major reshuffling is expected in the Communist Party's top rungs at the party congress in fall 2017, and many members have begun vying for influence. Current leaders and retired party elders are meeting this summer in Hebei Province to discuss major appointments and policies. Some say that Ling's sentence was part of Xi's campaign to solidify his grip on power.

China and the U.S. are negotiating over the treatment of Ling's brother, Ling Wancheng, who apparently brought Chinese state secrets to the U.S. Some speculate this also played a role in the older Ling's sentence.

I always wish we can replicate these things in our jurisdiction so that PEPs will now sit up to their responsibilities.
