TURKISH military chiefs say they have carried out a coup and overthrown the Government.The Turkish army has issued a statement claiming the military had taken over the country.

Military jets and helicopters are flying over the city. Both of Istanbul's bridges across the Bosphorus, the strait separating the European and Asian sides of the city have been closed to traffic.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said a group within Turkey's military had attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary”.

He said: “Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

He said Turkey's security services had been ordered to do whatever necessary to resolve the situation and warned those responsible would "pay the highest price".

Turkish television showed pictures of tanks surrounding the entrance to Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport.
