Correct me if l'm wrong but l never knew China, Japan and south Korea are majorly atheist countries. I thought they practiced zen Buddhism, North Korea and Russia though can be classified as Atheist.
Also most of the peaceful countries you speak of were religious for many years and some even have state churches.

You are right, God is not really important for Buddhism but not all versions of Buddhism. Some versions of Buddhism require a belief in deities. Though l'm not sure, but l think the one practiced in Japan is under this category, though this wasn't important to the Buddha.

Let me help you understand this a bit better.

-Theism and atheism are not religions, cannot be religions. both are simple words used to quantify the virtue of belief and unbelief as regards Gods.

Even though theism and atheism are just labels of belief and unbelief and are not and can never be religions, religions can be derived from the essence of these positions.

E.G islam, christianity, Mithraism are theistic religions.

Jainism, Taoism are broadly atheistic.

Being an atheist does not mean you don't have a religion or conform to any religious philosophies or doctrines, it only means one thing

Being theistic doesn't mean you have a religion, you might not even conform to any religious philosophy or doctrine.

So someone can be atheistic and religious and another be theistic and irreligious.

Someone can be atheistic and irreligious while one can mostly be theistic and religious.
