A fresh attack has occurred in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau state, where a first class traditional ruler was murdered by unknown gunmen on Monday afternoon.

The latest violence took place on Wednesday night in Danan, a settlement within Bokkos LGA.

In response, youth of the local government area barricaded all access routes to the council Thursday morning.

The convoy of the Plateau State commissioner of police, Adekunle Oladunjoye, which was on its way to the area, was stopped.

Mr. Oladunjoye had to plead with the angry youth at three barricades to allow police have access to Bokkos.

The leader of the youth group, Jibrin Malau, a physically-challenged man on wheelchair, said they would not allow soldiers provide security to their people anymore.

One youth, Peters Marren, said in an interview, “We don’t want soldiers again, because the community that was attacked yesterday night (Wednesday) is behind a military base, why didn’t they give the community protection?”

“Soldiers are betrayers, we will not allow soldiers into our villages, they are aiding the killings. They were there when Danan community was set on fire, the armed men destroyed, injured and kill our people. Soldiers must go, we want them replaced with mobile police
,” he said.

UPDATE:

BREAKING: Plateau Crisis: Soldiers open fire, one killed

Soldiers serving with the Special Task Force on Jos crisis on Thursday opened fire on rampaging youth who blocked a road in Bokkos Local Government Area, in protest of the killing of a monarch and a night attack there Wednesday.

At least one person was killed and five others injured, witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES.

A witness, Mangai Haruna, said the youth refused to allow soldiers into the area, pressing them instead to provide the killers of their kinsmen.

“They shot on our people, one of them died instantly,” Mr. Haruna said.

Residents say there is tension in Bokkos town, as many have fled the area to seek refuge elsewhere. The weekly Thursday market in the town could not open due to the crisis.

A spokesperson for the STF could not be immediately reached.

Plateau State has enjoyed relative calm in recent times after years of ethno-religious conflict that claimed the lives of thousands.

The latest spell of violence began on Monday afternoon when unknown gunmen ambushed and killed Lazarus Agaei, a first class traditional ruler and the Saf Ron Kurele, alongside his wife, son and a police guard.

On Wednesday night, unknown assailants reportedly destroyed homes and attacked residents of the area.

In protest, youth barricaded roads leading to the area on Thursday morning, and blocked the convoy of the police commissioner of Plateau State, Adekunle Oladunjoye. Mr. Oladunjoye was later allowed in.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations, Habila Joshak, is currently in Bokkos.

Mr. Joshak was deployed from Abuja to ensure the arrest of the killers of the monarch.

At Bokkos council police station where the youth gathered, Mr. Joshak sued for peace, and assured that perpetrators of the crime would be arrested and prosecuted.

He also visited the palace of the late paramount ruler where he pleaded for calm.

The DIG said the police was deploying a chopper for an aerial patrol of the local government council for the next two weeks, with the aim of arresting those behind the attacks.

He solicited the cooperation of residents to enable police fish out those behind the attacks.

Residents demanded the deployment of more mobile police officers to the local government to protect them.

LATEST UPDATE:

Plateau Shooting: Death toll rises to 4, curfew imposed

Three more people have died after soldiers opened fire on rampaging youth in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

One person had earlier been confirmed dead. Witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES that three of seven people who were injured in the attack, died, bringing the death toll to four.

Soldiers serving with the Special Task Force on Jos crisis on Thursday opened fire on youth who blocked a road in Bokkos in protest of the killing of a monarch and a night attack there Wednesday.

Residents said there is tension in Bokkos town, as many have fled the area to seek refuge elsewhere. The weekly Thursday market in the town could not open due to the crisis.

The military special task force imposed a 24-hour curfew on the town.

A spokesperson for the STF, Ikedichi Iweha, denied that soldiers killed the youth. He however confirmed the death of three of the youth who barricaded the routes.

Mr. Iweha, a captain in the Nigeria Army, told PREMIUM TIMES via phone that the youth were about to lynch some persons they suspected of being responsible for the killings, when soldiers intervened.

He said the youth shot at soldiers, injuring some of them.

“Our troops didn’t open fire aiming at anyone, they shot in the air to arrest an ugly situation. They youth were about to lynch some persons, our troops intervened; and the rampaging youth opened fire on our men and injured personnel. Three of the protesting youth were found dead, but not as a result of gun shot from our troop,” he said.

Mr. Iweha however said the situation had been brought under control, as officers have taken over Bokkos town.

Plateau State had enjoyed relative calm in recent months after years of ethno-religious conflict that claimed the lives of thousands.

Lawmakers, traditional and political leaders from the area gathered Thursday morning at the late monarch’s palace to meet the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations, Habila Joshak, and mourn the slain chief.

Joshua Dariye, a former governor and serving senator representing the district at the National Assembly, broke down into tears after observing a minute silence.

Mr. Dariye pleaded with the family and locals to be calm and allow security agencies investigate the killings.

“Two wrongs cannot make a right, let’s live peacefully, our paramount ruler is no more, no matter the amount of agitations we make, it will not return him to life,” he said. “But we demand that the IG sends a high-powered delegation of police expert to investigate the incident and bring perpetrators to book.”

The police DIG, Mr. Joshak, drafted from Abuja to lead the investigation, said justice will be done.

“No matter how long it will take, we must fish out the killers of the traditional ruler,” he said. “Vengeance is of God, let all of us be law-abiding, though this is a painful death, you can see the senator in tears.”

Meanwhile, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt more details about how the traditional ruler was murdered.

One of his sons, Cyprian Agaei, who survived the attack, told journalists that his father was strangled to death.
He said the assailants were masked.

“I cannot ascertain the identity of the killers, but I saw two persons, and masked, they didn’t shoot at my father, they shot the driver, but they strangled the paramount ruler to death, I believe it is a planned attack,” he said.

There is something very dangerous going on in the Buhari presidency which must be pointed out.

Buhari does not give a damn about people from the MB or Southerners.

The rampaging demonic herdsmen have been going about destyroying the means of livelihood, raping women, killing people in droves and sacking communities of the MB & South and what has this government done? let us take a short journey into what this govenment thinks about the invading herdsmen:

(1) Why we can’t stop influx of non-Nigerian herdsmen — FG

The Federal Government yesterday gave the ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol as a reason why non-citizens of Nigeria are still allowed to graze their cattle across the country.
It has been established that many herdsmen who are involved in clashes in Nigerian villages are not Nigerians.
The ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol, the government stated, has given the right of free movement to citizens of member countries.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who disclosed this at the opening of a two-day Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Grazing Reserves and Stock Routes in Abuja on Thursday, told journalists that the law is similar to the fundamental right to freedom of movement in the Nigerian constitution.
Chief Ogbeh said: “The Nigerian constitution has given every citizen the fundamental right to freedom of movement in search of legitimate businesses; transhumance pastoralism is seen along these lines.

Meanwhile this government has deployed the military to kill cattle rustlers. Rustlers are those that steal cattle from the herdsmen. This government is more interested in protecting cattle of the Fulani herdsmen than preventing women from the MB & South from being raped, people killed and farms devastated by fulani cattle.

(2) We will not use military force against Fulani herdsmen – FG

The Federal Government has ruled out the use of military might to subdue the attacking force of rampaging Fulani herdsmen.
Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, retd, while featuring on a Channels Television programme, “Question Times” on Sunday night said deployment of the military to combat the Fulani herdsmen menace was not an option because, the situation has not overwhelmed the police yet.
According to the Minister, “We must protect the country which is the main function of the police. The Civil Defence are there to complement them too.
“This is a non-military issue that borders on law and order. It is not every security issue that you call in the military. It is the responsibility of the police to maintain peace. I believe that if we put the police in proper position in terms of discharging its functions, then there would be no need for military option. The police are equal to the task. If you have to deploy the army, then you are going above board. In any case, I do not even have the power to deploy the military for anything. It is only when the situation gets out of hand that you invite the military.”
Recall that Fulani herdsmen have in recent past attacked several villages across the country, killing scores of people.

Meanwhile, the same government has deployed the military against unarmed protesters in the SE. They have killed several unarmed Igbo youth including ladies.

(3) Herdsmen killing Nigerians are from Libya – Buhari

President Muhammdu Buhari has stated that herdsmen involved in the killing of Nigerians are non-Nigerians who came from Libya.
Speaking yesterday in London, Buhari said Ghadaffi, during his 43 year-regime, trained some people from the Sahel militarily.

The soldiers are solidly behind the fulani herdsmen.

They have been instructed to provide protection for the fulani herdsmen against cattle rustlers but the herdsmen themselves that group to attack and unleash mayhem on communities are not being addressed.

Ask your self how many rampaging fulani herdsmen have been killed by soldiers? The soldiers are more interested in killing cattle rustlers being people that steal funali cattle.

Not surprising since the president is a herdsman himself.

How long will well-meaning Nigerians continue to keep silent as innocent people are being killed daily whilst Buhari provides security to his Fulani brothers and their cattle's

It is high time Nigerians ask Buhari to step-down if he's not capable in keeping to his constitutional duty of protecting the people.

It is evil to keep silent in the face of injustice.

Electing Buhari as president was a big mistake.

He has refused to utter a word on these incessant attacks.

Sad.

If buhari is not careful, Nigeria might descend into a state of anarchy.

Will the current security challenges, every community might just decide to provide security for themselves once and for all.

Nigeria is gradually descending into a state of anarchy.

Any community that fails to secure itself but waiting for FG security is on its own.

Its disheartening seeing the silence from a lot of the one Nigerianists when gross injustice and oppression is being perpetrated daily. How long shall it take before men of conscience speak out against the killings of innocent people in their homelands at dead of the night? Both leaders and their followers are mowed down and everything continues as though nothing happened. Senator Datong was killed by same people, nothing happened. The late Tor Tiv Alfred Torkula was forced out of his ancestral palace before he died of shock by the same assailants. Today, the Ron Kulere of the Lere people in Bokkos have been given a taste of one Nigeria. A first class chief hacked down in his own chiefdom like a woman raped and killed in front of her husband on their matrimonial bed. A protest by the youths saw some of them gunned down by the Nigerian Army. This is why I hate these demons. Something the fulanis couldn't do to the warrior tribes of the middle belt during the fodio's jihad is what they are doing successfully today under the protection and support of the Nigerian army while others keep mute. The hausa/fulanis had carefully removed the MB people from the Army after the Dimka coup and replaced them with their own. Only the in the mobile police force do you have the MB. They only need them when its time to fight a war with any group from the south. This is what the Bokkos youths are crying for. Where are elders of the MB? They are still tagging behind gowon in support of this wicked system in Nigeria. Well, time will tell and the people of the future will read and laugh at the foolishness of the present people of Nigeria. Until then, I'll protect Igboland with my life, fight along side my comrades from the SE/SS and speak up against the oppression of innocent people killed in other regions. This Nigeria is never a land which any reasonable person should be proud of.

The silence of the likes of Gowon and civil activists across the country is shocking to say the least.

The conscience of many has been sold to the devil in the guise of supporting Buhari and his Fulani hegemony.
