The Central Bank of Nigeria has provided a loan to Skye Bank Plc to boost its liquidity after the lender breached requirements on capital and lending.

The short-term lending facility will allow new management to “ensure that some withdrawals it suffered in the wake of the undue panic of last week do not adversely affect its operations,’’ the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, said in an emailed response to questions.

He said the CBN had also issued guarantees to the bank’s depositors and creditors as a demonstration of its health.

The central bank replaced top managers of Skye Bank earlier this month after it breached required thresholds for liquidity and non-performing loans.

While the regulator moved to calm markets, saying Skye and the industry remained healthy, the stock plunged to record lows, leading declines among other Nigerian lenders.

The CBN has said it has no plan to sell Skye Bank.

The CBN guarantee will not only enhance Skye Bank’s interbank trading and activities; but will also provide assurance to the other banks to continue to deal with and trade with the bank’s instruments in the interbank market.

Good move.

CBN intervened by changing the management of the institution and announced the issues around the bank hence the run on them. Naturally alot of the investors and shareholders will panic and take action to recover their investments.

However....why announce the SLF when its expected although that was part of the sins of the previous management. Lets hope the new guys rally around and are able to stabilise the situation...although the prospects are quite dim in this change era!

Where are those brain dead financial analysts selling fear to people over this issue on Nairaland .
Instigating people into panic withdrawals.

Some people on this forum like to show superior knowledge when in reality they are empty.

The world will never change.

We Nigerians create the panic.

Now, we Nigerians are paying for the incompetence of both Skye Bank's management and panic mongers.

Ignorance still remains the biggest disease in Black Africa unfortunately.

SMH...

huh, serious gobe dey ooo.
I can't withdraw more than #10000 at a go on a Skye bank ATM in my current location in oyo state, I was scared thinking it was a restriction on my account, I contacted my bank through mail, the bank advised I use another bank machine. People should be careful with their funds oooooo.
The funniest part is that the #65 charges is still applicable on that ridiculously low amount allowed on their machine.

do you really think it's the fault of those raising the panics?
we are in a nation where you don't easily get credit facility, where you hardly get apologies talk more of compensation, how do you expect citizens having life savings to react? it's not just about withdrawals, shareholders too will be selling off their equity, you can't also blame them since there is no guarantee for higher value tomorrow.
Panic is not just about Skye or Nigerians, it happens anywhere an organization dealing with public fund is in distress, it's similar to fuel scarcity.
