Traders and buyers in Benue state today staged a massive protest in Lessel town, the headquarters of Ushongo LGA against the multiple tax placed on food items in the state which has led to the blockage of the major state highway running through the town.

Investigations revealed that many farm produce, most of which are perishable, are subjected to multiple layers of taxation both on the farmers, the middlemen and the end buyers, a situation which has made business slow, with attendant losses being suffered by farmers who must sell at whatever price to avoid their produce perishing.

A bag of fresh pepper which is currently selling at the cost of N1000.00 attracts a multiple layer of levies from the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) cumulatively amounting to over N700.00, leaving the trader with less than N300.00.

While Gov. Ortom has been declaring a monthly IGR receipt of N500 million only, Mrs. Orubibi on the other hand is said have consistently maintained that the agency under her leadership is gathering in over N1 billion monthly.

It is the contention by many in the state that the high and multiple taxes imposed by the Ortom administration on people and businesses in the state is not justifiable, particularly considering the poor performance of the administration which has failed to execute any project of significance in over a year.

Tax are money paid to Government to increase Government revenue and prompt the existence of infrastructural facilities and development in the state

In as much as I would have love to support this Orton's tax policy....I think I will stand firm aqainst it...

All levels of Niqeria government aren't trustworthy...they collect this tax and distribute amonq party members....they spend it on their families....atleast we saw the Arms deal..

With this taxation on almost everything, the kind inflation that will soon be showing will be nothing less than 25% and that would be a full blown famine!

I wish our leaders will ever get sense to think of the plight of the common man!

Most Nigerian states don't know what they are doing. Creating an enabling environment for business to trive most times inviolves tax waiver or tax reduction especially on the type of products involved.
The government wants to make money at all cost at the expense of local poor farmers who they haven't supported with fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation technology, weather and climate information, constant training, loans for procuct processing etc and they just jump up and tax heavily.
Please ensure that during the next elections, it's either technocrats with good leadership skills that get into power or no elections. Naija must hear the populace now.

But we not complain when we are in London, where everything are being taxed except the air we breath.

What I will advice all Nigerians is to enforced and called for prudent spending of all fund- accountability.
