The Nigeria Olympic football team will finally depart their Atlanta, Georgia training base in the United States for Brazil on Monday for the Olympic Games, after a series of setbacks. The team was supposed to have left the United States for Brazil last week, but was held up in Atlanta as their air tickets were not ready at the time. Head coach Samson Siasia had last week cried that they were yet to get their air tickets out of to Brazil, even as reports emanated that they were stranded in the United States. The team will now leave on Monday, three days to their opening fixture against Japan. “We will leave on Monday as our tickets have now been confirmed,” a team official told .com. Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel will lead the team to South America, after being named as captain of Team Nigeria to the Games, following his inclusion as one of the over-aged players in Siasia’s squad.

William Troost-Ekong has arrived in Manaus for the Olympic Games, hours ahead of the rest of the Nigeria U23 team, Goal can report. The Haugesund defender got to Manaus on Tuesday afternoon and has lodged himself at the team’s hotel. Troost-Ekong, a 22-year-old central defender with the Super Eagles, has been brought in as cover for the team after their poor outing at the Suwon Invitational Tournament in June. He was allowed to return to Norway from Atlanta by coach Samson Siasia for a domestic game at the weekend before flying via Amsterdam to Sao Paulo and on to Manaus. The player told Goal that it was a tiring trip but he was in a good mood ahead of the tournament. Another player that would fly in separate from the squad is Umar Aminu who also was given special permission by the coach to leave camp early. The remaining members of the squad will depart Atlanta on Tuesday via a chartered flight en route for Manaus. Nigeria will play their first game against Japan in the wee hours of August 5 (2am) as they attempt to win Olympic gold 20 years after their illustrious seniors won the title in Atlanta.

Nigeria U23 will wear a new set of jerseys at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, according to the Nigeria Football Federation. The new home and away kits were announced by the NFF on Tuesday afternoon. The NFF signed a three-and-half -year contract with Nike in 2015 that will see the US-based sportwear giant provide products worth $3.75m. The home kit is a solid green shirt, with white ribbing around the back of the modern crewneck collar featuring Nike’s Dri-FIT technology. In keeping true to the national colours of Nigeria, the new away kit is white with a green stripe that runs the length of the sides of shirt and shorts, and a green stripe along the back of the collar. 1 Like

oloriooko: Nigeria U23’s preparations for Friday's Rio 2016 Olympic clash against Japan have been disrupted after their trip to the Brazilian city was terminated. The African U23 champions were initially due to leave Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon, but the players’ appeal over the size of the plane caused the trip to be cancelled, according to media officer Timi Ebikagboro. The players and technical crew have returned to their hotel and will now depart for Brazil on Thursday at 7.30am after the federal government hired a Delta Airline flight, ‘an all VIP aircraft’ to make the team confortable. hopefully they will be there today |

Match Preview: Africa's under-23 Cup of Nations champions Nigeria are set to clash with AFC's under-23 Championship titlists Japan in the second match of the opening round of Group B competitions in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. The game is scheduled this Thursday, August 4 at the Arena da Amazônia in Manaus immediately after the Sweden-Colombia encounter. The Dream Team are going to be bannered by Chelsea's veteran midfielder John Obi Mikel, who at age 29 is one of the head coach Samson Siasia's three overage players. Mikel is joined by 30-year-old starting goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who was the senior team's backup goal tender, and midfielder Usman Muhammed as the squad's experienced players. However, the national team is bannered by 19-year-old winger Azubuike Okechukwu, who has already earned 19 international caps and is currently suited up for Turkish second-tier club Yeni Malatyaspor. Recent rumors have emerged that the best player in last year's under-23 Cup of Nations tourney is being targeted by Ligue 1 club AS Monaco this summer, via ESPN. The team is strong in almost all positions, except in goalkeeping, which is why Akpeyi was called up for this summer's competitions. They would have a hard time advancing in the quarterfinals, though, as they are included in a very tough group. Japan captured the AFC U-23 title last January by pulling off a come-from-behind victory over arch-rival South Korea, 3-2, in the final of the said tournament, as per Cri English. Along with the title is the Olympic berth, with the Koreans and Iraq also joining them as the representatives of AFC in this year's Olympics. The Japanese U-23 squad had always been short of medals in the international arena and this summer is another opportunity to grab such elusive recognition. As mentioned before, Group B is a tough group, but the Samurai Blue has the skills and roster to go past the group stage. Head coach Makoto Teguramori will have 21-year-old Arsenal striker Takuma Asano as the central figure of his offense. His frontline partner, Urawa Red Diamonds' Shinzo Koroki, is one of three overage players together with defenders Hiroki Fujiharu and Tsukasa Shiotani. The predicted result is a 3-2 decision for Japan. Nigeria starting lineup (4-4-2 formation): Akpeyi; Madu, Shehu, Troost-Ekong, Amuzie; Etebo, Mikel, Okechukwu, Muhammed; Ajayi, Ezekiel Japan starting lineup (4-4-2 formation): Kushibiki; Muroya, Endo, Fujiharu, Shiotani; Nakajima, Kubo, Nakamura, Ideguchi; Koroki, Asano Read more: http://en.yibada.com/articles/148160/20160803/rio-olympics-2016-football-nigeria-vs-japan-preview-prediction-predicted.htm#ixzz4GM6SJ7Tm
