Its a pity Nigerian students would only sit at the back of their computers to lament. What have the Student done in the area of Student Unionism to protect their right to education? Students in U.S.A would not take this from Barrack Obama.

It is clear that this govt is not sincere.what can adams do?he hasn't put his state in order let alone national issues.Ambrose Alli university,Ekpoma went on strike before ASUU embarked on theirs,as a result of high tax imposed on them by the state govt.Now the matter is yet to be resolved.Teachers in his state are on strike also.i think adams should put his state in order first.Nothing good will come out i bet.

Oshiomole? Why na? He cant even attend to the current State University (AAU) strike. Haba! thats no way forward. As for me Oshiomole has got too much problems now in Edo State, we would not even allow him travel down to Abuja.

The president backs the CBN governor to print a wopping 420billion to put into privately owned banks without asking for help, yet he is looking for 'help' to send back the youth of this nation who his administration have decided to render useless as they have left them staying at home for months idle, because his children have all been married off to governors.

The students don't care either, they all want to sit at home watching football up and down without knowing that it's their own future they are wasting by going to watch footballers making their own future brighter.

I am yet to see a protest (civilized) from the students of Nigerian universities against the federal government, just one have not been done before, so tell me, what kind students do we even have in the universities? dummy or mumu

What da f*+k do they want from adams?he's a politician now & not a union leader.there is fire on d mountain in edo state(strikes).its disheartening to learn that the entire amount paid as salaries to serving politicians is about 1.3 trillion naira.think of what half this amount would do 4 d university system.to think dat d president,v.president,minister of education were once lecturers, and we still have govt/ASUU crises,is hopelessly frustrating.naija is almost doomed

Since the president and his minister are so helpless in solving this face-off,Sam Egwu should resign and let Oshiomhole be allowed to appoint an education minister that can negotiate with ASUU.

Once the strike is called off it does'nt matter who he uses if he likes he should consult osama bin laden once the strike is called off, good

If i were still in Uni, i would have gathered my comrades from all schools to stage protest and sue the FG for toying with our education which is our future. NANS dey slack!

I just hope what ASUU is asking for will be a lasting solution because unions in Nigeria are always asking for short term benefits.
I pray after this strike, there will be no one again for the next 30yrs or more,

After going through this write-up, I think ASUU needs to reason with the FG. They should suspend the strike and go back to the negotiation table.

Mr. President's turning to Mr. Adam's Oshiomole to intervene in the current crisis is a vote of no confidence, an indictment on the abilities of the Education minister, Mr. Sam Egwu to steer the rudders of that ministry. In other climes, Mr. Egwu would have resigned.

ASUU Strike: Oshiomhole Meets Egwu


Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has intervened in the ongoing crises between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), with an assurance that intensive efforts were being made to urge the warring parties back to the negotiation table.
From all indications, intervention of Oshiomhole, who is former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was as a result of his Monday meeting with President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who sought his assistance towards resolution of the strike.
Speaking with newsmen after a closed door meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, in Abuja, yesterday, Oshiomhole said he, even though he enjoys a great relationship with the striking Union, cannot simply ask them to call off the strike and return to work, because there were issues that have to be resolved after negotiations have been resumed.
The President, he said, means well, but ASUU also has reasons for their action, which is to make universities what they are supposed to be.
“This is a disagreement between patriots. The key issue now is to resume negotiations as ASUU is willing to talk.
The Minister has also assured me that the Federal Government is ready to resume talk with ASUU," he said, adding that "we must talk sensibly, be honest in what we say, and be committed to honouring whatever we agree on, the negotiations should not be carried out on the pages of newspapers."
Egwu said he had very meaningful discussions with Oshiomhole, adding that the meeting was due to the fact that the Federal Government is worried at the continued closure of Nigerian universities.
Egwu said government cannot grant ASUU 109 per cent increase it is demanding, because revenue for such expenditure was not available, adding that other sectors of the economy would be affected.He called on ASUU to resume negotiations with government who is ready to continue dialogue with it immediately, noting that the issues cannot be resolved in just one sitting or in a little period, because many of the issues have been contentious over a long period of time.“If government offers 109per cent to ASUU, I would be happy, as it is my constituency.

But the government has to consider the revenue inflow and offer what it can afford. Government is ready to continue negotiations with ASUU even if it is tomorrow, as we are not happy that students are at home,” Egwu said.He noted that government is ready to shift its stance to accommodate ASUU, if it is willing to do the same, so that the two parties can reach a compromise.In another development, Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, has berated ASUU for its incessant strike actions, especially in the last 10 years, which has seriously distorted the academic calendarFielding questions from newsmen after presentation of a draft, National Employment Action Plan to the National Council on Employment in Abuja yesterday, Kayode said most of the efforts that should be channelled into job creation in the nations, are being dissipated on handling and settling of industrial disputes.
