Reas what you have written again? 1) There is a difference between the family head of land owning families and Omo oniles. 2) Omo oniles cannot legally repossess a land that has been sold to you. 3) This law is defective The draftsman that wrote that provision should be ******(Yes, I said it but then I think it might be a case of bad drafting). 4) Who is going to fix the foundation fee? There is no part of the article to suggest that the e law has fixed anything. 5) Is it going to be relative to a particular area or discretionary at the behest of the family head? 6) What is going to happen if the landowner think it is too excessive? 7) Why should anyone pay for foundation fee after he/she has legally acquired a land which has in law and in fact becomes his/hers? I hope they are not expecting the court or any governmental institution to waste our resources in sorting out something as stvpid and frivolous as foundation fee. sobmos: |

Lazy people in government, were they blind before they created a law with so much ambiguity? Ambode better sit up, I say they remove that section totally. You expect me to pay for land, pay government taxes over the property, maintain it and then still pay foundation fee? Criminality is gradually getting a legal foot hold in our government. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Whether he was Under pressure from Lagos landowners association or he just wants to tactically do eye service (line his pocket with cheap and dirty egunge from foundation laying fees is out of the question) the fact remains that Gov. Ambode really messed up an opportunity, came up short of ideas and exhibited poor judgement. This is a classical case of arresting a notorious thief and then setting a dangerous robber free. Gov Ambode pls make up your civilised mind are you for the masses or for those that are already rich. If in doubt pls check international best practices around the world as regards the sale of land. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Legalizing fraud. The most barbaric aspect is that the foundation fee is not stated which means the land owners can demand for any amount legally and the buyer must pay, this is insane. This law was suppose to protect land buyers but in actual sense it will derail them the more. Before when land owner fee (omo onile) fee is not legalize you can take them to court or use soldiers on them but now you can't do that but to pay whatever amount they ask. This law has empower omo onile the more. People requested to be protected from land owners exploitation over the Year but the government could not protect them because majority of the government stakeholders are from omo onile families, so to make it look like they want protect them the the make a law with a clause(foundation fee) which can be any amount since it was not specified in the law. |

nedu2000: If 99% of Lagos IGR is from taxes, then they are doing the right thing. It is not the duty of proper government to engage in exports. Citizens produce, export and pay taxes on proceeds/profits to government. |

sobmos:If paying for a land has not been enough deterrent to omo nile, paying foundation fee won't. People have "always" paid foundation fee anyway, na legalisation dem do so. Now, after paying the foundation fee to the family, omo nile would still come for theirs, if you don't pay them, no work goes on, and neither the family nor the government would do anything about it. So, forget all those grammar! |

Bigante: I thought the law was passed by the lagos state house of assembly and there must have been public hearings held on it by the house. Why blame Ambode alone? We always argue that the legislature represents the people more than the executive. |

sobmos: Oh!! Nairalanders, Will never read a post but will rush to comment. How will the amount paid be determined? What if a land with a house is sold and the new owner demolished it. Will he pay foundation fee to reconstruct again? In some areas, the land owners are not touts, once they sold the land, they don't worry u again. Now, Lagos govt is now tell them to also worry us for foundation fee 1 Like |

Only foundation fee, what about decking fee, roofing fee, fencing fee and any other fee the "omonile" can come up with. I even had to pay renovation fee once, before I was allowed to comment a renovation contract I had. How are the fees to be determined and what happens if the new land owner refuses to pay? How are the "legal" Omoniles to be determined, what happens if one set of Omonile comes to collect Omonile fees and the next day another set comes again with cutlasses to demand for theirs? As happened to so many new house builders in Lagos. I do not see force men paying this Omonile fees. This law is what I call legalizing illegality. Why can't all the various extra fees be included with the price of the land? |

sobmos:Bro i disagree with you, there is nothing stopping the government from stipulating that it should be one payment, imagine that you pay once and for all for your land, even if there is hidden charges uncluded.. This new law simply means you can buy a land for 10m and they will still come back to say foundation is 20m, that means the land is 30m. The land should have been advertised for 30m initially and the sharing of the money is left to the land owners This new law will bring more anarchy and it does not protect investors. 1 Like |

No doubt about this but the law MUST state the percentage allowed to be collected as 'foundation fee'. Not when you pay N100million for a land and the family insist on collecting N200Million as foundation fee. sobmos: |
