There is currently a thread to discuss who is better between El Nino and Drogs.
Well, I have been arguing with my friends for quite a while about who is the better striker between Villa and Eto'o.
What some ppl fail to realise is that Xavi,Iniesta and Messi were very key to Eto'os' success.
Anyway, I wanna revive the argument now that Eto's has moved to Inter and Ibra is now in front of the best goal providers.
What spurned this argument was the several comments I saw on goal.com by some barca fans stating that Eto'o was better than Villa.

Goal.com also wrote an article on the debate

http://www.goal.com/en/news/1717/editorial/2009/02/19/1117060/spanish-inquisition-samuel-etoo-vs-david-villa-who-is-the-best-st

Anyway, here is a little Stat for each player

Samuel Eto'o

This Season
3 goals in 6 league games, 1 goal in cup,0 in Europe. Total - 4 goals

Carreer club total - 207 goals in 408 games

David Villa

6 goal in 5 league games,0 in cup,2 goals in Europe.Total - 8 goals

Carreer Country total - 52 in 33 caps,

Carreer club total - 212 in 414

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

5 goals in 5 league games,0 in cup,2 goals in Europe.Total - 7 goals

Career club total - 160 in 361 games

Lets hear your views.

By the way Moderators, how do I add a poll to this thread?

Oh really undecided undecided. Funny you should say that. I guess it was eto'o's twin brother who scored crucial goals for cameroon, mallorca and barcelona. *Shior*

Crucial goals for Cameroon were possible because of stupid african defenders.I mean - dont compare the nations cup to the EWuropean leagues.
Is it the likes of Guinea that Eto'o bullies that we want to talk about here?

In Mallorca - He never bagged up to 20 league goals a season.

In Barcelona - Last time I checked, they had Messi,Henry,Xavi,Iniesta.

Im not saying the guy is not good.He is a born striker.

Im just asking who would u prefer in ur team.

I guess you are right. Eto'o scores his goals against shitty teams while villa scores his against european powerhouses. They include the likes of liechtenstein, san marino and slovakia undecided undecided undecided.

Neither did Villa when he played for Real Zaragoza

The last I checked, none of those players scored game changing goals in 2 champions league finals.

Eto'o. Marginal difference between the two players.

What about France, England,Sweded,
Neither did Villa when he played for Real Zaragoza
Point taken.I was trying to drive home the fact that a better midfield provided more goals.

The last I checked, none of those players scored game changing goals in 2 champions league finals.

This CL Final, the dirty job was done by Iniesta.Eto'o finished it.My second point still.

Eto'o. Marginal difference between the two players.

Your reasons please.I need to know why.

WHAT ABOUT FRANCE,SWEDEN & ENGLAND? Well, samu also scored against brazil and nigeria(ACN finals).

THIS CL FINALS,THE DIRTY JOB WAS DONE BY INIESTA. ETO'O SIMPLY FINISHED IT  Errrrrrrr. . . . . . . . I think you'll find he(iniesta) only did half of the work. When the ball landed @ eto'o feet,he still had Vidic(top 2 center backs in the world) and Van der sar(Top 5 goalkeeper) to beat.

As I said earlier,IMO the difference between the two players is minimal and you can certainly swing both ways. Over all,I think eto'o just about takes it because he has performed and scored more crucial goals. Villa technique and skill level is better than Samu's.

The issue of Eto'o has been overdiscussed in NL and other discussion forums since 2004.
Here are topics on it in 2005: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=19881.0;viewResults, https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-8893.0.html, https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-253406.0.html, https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-787.0.html etc

But have you sat down and wondered why Eto'o is the only recurring decimal in World's best strikers debate since 2004? In 2004-2006, he was being compared with Henry and Shevchenko as world's best striker. Later, around 2006/2007, he was being compared with Drogba, Toni and co as world's best striker. Now, he still surfaces in the list of world best striker, drawing comparison with Villa, Torres,Ibra and co. Class is indeed permanent.

On current form, I will not say Eto'o is the best striker in the world. But on he was obviously the best striker in the world 2006/2008 except the time he was on injury.

One funny thing about Eto'o underraters is the quick reference they make to players around him in acknowledging his success as a striker as if there is a player who doesn't depend on other team mates. Before their argument was that Eto'o was scoring goals because he had Ronnie and Deco behind him. When Ronnie left and Samu continued to bang in goals, the argument changed to it was because of Xavi and Iniesta. The fact is Eto'o was as important to Barca then as Ronnie. In fact, Eto'o was voted by fans as Barcelona player of the season in 2004/2005 season ahead of Ronaldinho.

You need to watch Eto'o at Mallorca. How he singlehanded demolished Real Madrid in Kings cup final and also saved the club from relegation in 2003/2004 season. You also missed the point by saying Eto'o did not score more than 20 goals in a season in Mallorca. He scored 21 goals in his last season in the club. I watched his last seasons in Mallorca and saw his games agianst RM. There was a goal he scored by dribbling all RM defenders, including Carlos. He was then a specialist in scoring against Madrid that the dean himself, Zizzou, made a comment about how Eto'o, their player, alawys scored against them. That was vintage Eto'o at Mallorca.

In confederation club in 2003(I think), you also need to see how Eto'o wrecked Brazil with a very wonderful long range shot.

Eto'o, for your information, is all-time highest goalscorer in African cup of nations(and he will still score more, he's young enough to play two more ANCs).

So I wonder whether Ronaldinho, Deco, Iniesta or Xavi were the ones supplying the passes to him in Mallorca and Cameroun.

If he was outstanding in Mallorca and Cameroun, it was only natural that he'll be great in Barcelona.

And to add this too. Eto'o is a big game player, scoring two crucial champion league final goals, and they were no tap-in. Both were goals that he still had at least a defender to beat before scoring.

Let's give it to Eto'o. He is a great striker.

^^^^^ Great points well made cool. However the poster said 20 league goals not 20 goals in a season wink.
