Nigeria’s digital economy can nurture Africa’s tech industry

Nigeria is well known for its Nollywood film industry. This has spread across the continent taking up a huge chunk of television space in countries in East Africa while dominating its West African roots.

But Nigeria’s growing mobile and tech space could be the next frontier if policies that are put in place can guide Africa’s most populous country to become a true tech hub.
Nigeria’s mobile landscape is not like any other on the continent. The country, which boasts over 100% penetration (107% by October 2015), is a breeding ground for technology companies from inside and outside Africa.
Statistics from 2014 [PDF] show that Nigeria’s mobile ecosystem contributed US$8.3 billion to the economy. This represented 1.4% of Gross Domestic Product (“GDP”).
The progress is buoyed by the launch of internet and mobile based business solutions, opening opportunities for Nigerian business to move into the digital economy.

One service is Orange Business Services, which according to Orange, aims to enable IT officers to take advantage of the shift to digital economy.

Giorgio Heiman, Vice President, Africa at Orange Business Services said: “There are many growth opportunities in IT, particularly in high-growth markets like Nigeria and across West Africa, but these can only be harnessed if service providers have a local understanding of strategic, political and cultural sensitivities in a region.”
Heiman added: “We act as a trusted advisor to help our customers compete on an equal footing in

Heiman added: “We act as a trusted advisor to help our customers compete on an equal footing in what is rapidly becoming a global market. This includes competitive, high-quality IT services delivered in all countries in which they operate.”
The opportunities are not only open to multinationals like Orange but to businesses and start-ups alike. Due to its huge population (180 million) Nigeria could be a single open market to jumpstart Africa’s biggest tech companies.

Digital Inclusion and IT participation
Just like most Sub Saharan African countries, Nigeria’s internet access is accelerated by mobile penetration. Currently over 90% of internet users access it through their mobile phones.

Increasingly, Nigeria is becoming a centre for big tech investment and commercially oriented start-ups. Whatever the country’s challenges, investors and entrepreneurs are attracted by the prospect of scaling applications to Africa’s largest population and economy. Many have set up shop in Lagos’s Yaba district. There you can find the headquarters for e-commerce start-up Africa Internet Group and digital payments venture Paga, located near incubators Andela and Co-Creation Hub.

Nigeria’s tech sector is becoming representative of repatriate entrepreneurs reversing some of Africa’s brain drain and IT reshaping the continent’s global linkages.
All three of Africa’s most recognized e-commerce startups – Jumia, Konga and MallforAfrica – were founded by Nigerians who earned their university degrees and initial private sector experience in the US. A noteworthy portion of the roughly $600 million in VC to these entities comes from American and European investment firms. And the management of Jumia’s parent, Africa Internet Group, is a mix of repatriate Africans and MBA types from the US and Europe attracted to the continent’s IT opportunities over development work.

It's nothing but self hate and serious damaging low self esteem and complex..

These ipob characters I do understand their predicament because they were raised with hate and anger, but what about the likes of Reno Omokri peddling silly pictures about ICT ministers and what they look like as if looks and fashion means one is better than the other.

It's really sad..

No, you've got it wrongly figured out.
You are the one raised with so much hate and suspicion.
Is there any issue you will ever analyse without roping Ipob into it ?

Kenya to set world record $27bn mobile money transfers in 2015

Kenya’s mobile money transactions hit $23 billion in the 10-months to October which is $4 billion more than in the same period last year, according to data from the country’s Central Bank.
The East African country leads the world in mobile money use, and could make a new record this year. Kenya’s 10-month transactions equal the country’s entire transfers for 2014The use of the service this year could surpass the $27 billion mark, an unnamed information technology expert told the Xinhua news agency.

"If subscribers transact an average of $2.2 billion a month, then it means in November and December they will move at least $4.4 billion. If you add it to $23 billion it comes to $27.4 billion, which is a new record," said the expert.

Kenya’s average monthly transactions stood at $2.2 billion this year compared with $1.9 billion in 2014.

October saw the most transferred when $2.51 billion was sent via mobile phones. It’s the highest ever transaction made in the history of mobile money services.

Kenyans use mobile financial services to buy goods, pay bills, pay fares, send and receive money. It’s the easiest way to make payments as most of the people don’t have bank accounts.

Rubbish....

Lagos state's GDP, an ordinary state in Nigeria IS $131 Billion

Kenya's entire GDP is meager $63 Billion

Lagos's GDP and economy is almost 3 times larger than entire Kenya's GDP

Lagos alone can buy and sell the whole of Kenya and have a lot of change left over to by other countries around Kenya..

You people just open your mouth to spew garbage, but you have zero clue about anything, you know zero even about Kenya and even your own country...

Shameful and pathetic I must say..

What is wrong with wishing Kenya well in her IT efforts while we as Nigerians strive to be the best in the world? Such has been our ways, please let us not change and become like the rest of Africa that seem to wish nothing but ill on other African nations.

At the very least we should strive to be the best and ignore the other nations to their stupidity.

6. Facebook CEO himself personality invested tens of millions of dollars in our ICT sector which is a strong affirmation and believe in our strong ICT economy.

Kenya is nowhere close to Nigeria when it comes to ICT so of what relevance is what their ICT person looks like or what he wears.?

Looks and fashion is not a sing of greatness or smarts, me dressing and looking better than you doesn't mean I'm smarter and more successful than you.

For our ICT to be better than Kenya several times over, it means we have better ICT environment than Kenya and the rest of Africa.

What is driving such ignorant ICT sentiments from the likes of Reno Omokri and many ignorant and thoughtless Nigerian youths is inferiority complex, ignorance and low self esteem.

While many Nigerians including the ICT sector are working hard and contributing to our economy and our greatness, these shallow characters with inferiority complex are busy crying and worrying about looks and fashion..

Thats a lot of nonsense .Talking from a qualitative point of view, product output and ICT infrastructure you're way off.Having a bigger population doesn't mean your ICT is bigger or better - India can claim to have bigger ICT than the UK but only a fool would think Indian ICT is ahead of UK just because of bigger population.

There is a difference between Kemya and Nairobi.

I was comparing Lagos state's 20 million with the whole of Kenya and not Nigeria's 170 million, learn how to read and comprehend simple English words..

Nairobi is the capital and a state in Kenya and not the country

Lagos is a state in Nigeria and the former Federal capital of Nigeria

Kenya as a country has a population of 44 million

Lagos as a state has a population of 20 million

Meaning the entire population of the whole of Kenya doubles Lagos state's population

But Lagos as a state commands a GDP that's larger than 40 African countries entire GDP

Lagos as a state in Nigeria is the 7th largest economy in Africa

Lagos's GDP doubles and almost triple the whole of Kenya's economy including your Nairobi put together..

Lagos can buy and sell the whole of Kenya 3 times over.

Stupidity is you thinking Nairobi is a country when if fact it's a common state and capital in Kenya just like Lagos.

Btw, go back to elementary school to learn geography, countries and capitals and quit embarrassing the people who suffered to educate you..

I see u have been running riot all over this forum, making useless arguments about Nigeria being better than Kenya in "all aspects", but how wrong u are!
The GDP of Lagos vs Kenya........Lagos is a big city of well over 22million pipo, with thousands of businesses catering for the high incomed pipo. Much of the Lagos Revenue comes from the many corporations based there etc. Therefore, it is only natural that a large city such as Lagos, it being the commercial hub of a large country such as Nigeria and catering for the needs of so many pipo (180million) is bound to have such a huge GDP. Pipo in the city of Lagos, just like in the most other cities around the world have higher income per capita than the pipo in the rural areas.

Now, Kenya is a country with only around 44million pipo, around 65 percent of its citizens live in the rural areas. Obviously the incomes of these rural folks isnt comparable to those in the big cities such as Lagos and Nairobi, however it is comparable to the living standards of the rural folks in Nigeria.

Now let us compare the living standard between Lagosians and Nairobians

Lagos State GDP (2016)=$90billion
Population=22million
What is the GDP per Capita of Lagosians therefore?

Roughly $4100

Nairobi County GDP (2014)=26billion
Population=3.8million

GDP per capita rough estimate=$6500

Does your misguided and upside down rubbish negate the fact that Lagos state alone in Nigeria with 20 million people has a larger GDP and economic activities that the whole of Kenya put together almost 3 times over?

Does it it alter the fact that Lagos state alone in Nigeria has the 7th largest economy in the whole of Africa, kenya included?

Nairobi's 3.8 million population represents 26 billion dollars even without OIL,it still would be 130 billion dollars if it had a population of 22 million.
On the other hand Lagos has 22 million population representing 91 billion dollars, means its under performing even with all the OIL $$$.

I can imagine if your Lagos had only 3.8 million population.

To be equal to Nairobi, even marginally, Lagos needs to have a GDP of 130 billion dollars or more and strictly without OIL.

It was the first African country on the medal table and worldwide,it rubbed shoulders with world's heavy weights.
Your giant of Africa was nowhere to be seen.
I wonder how it would be in here if only there were 200 million Kenyans with all the billions of barrels of OYEL!,besides its over 585,000 square KM's not as tiny as you may think.
Inasmuch its on a path to even becoming something beyond Africa's wildest imaginations.
