Assisted by military personnel, local divers in Bayelsa State have recovered bodies of three drowned soldiers yesterday in Brass LGA area.

This was contained in series of statements issue by the Bayelsa State Chapter Chairman of The National Maritime Union, Mr. Lloyd Sese, He said the tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of four soldiers in Brass Local Government area was due to poor logistics and use of low powered engine boats to convoy military personnel.

Mr. Sese, who commented on the incident yesterday in Yenagoa, said the preliminary investigation conducted by the Brass Unit of the Maritime Union showed that the accident could have been avoided if adequate logistics were arranged with high capacity engine boats used.

He stated that “they used small boats with low capacity engines.”

He called on the military authorities to consult the Maritime Union for logistics and transport during such movements, while we commiserate with the Nigerian Military on the loss of their men, “we call on the military to consult those involved in the day to day commercial activities along the creeks and the waterways.”

Earlier, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations, confirmed the boat mishap saying "we have not been able to ascertain the number of soldiers who may have lost their lives. It is quite a tragic incident

IF WE ARE EVER SERIOUS IN THIS COUNTRY, THEN THE NIGERIAN GOVT SHOULD AS A MATTER OF URGENCY CONVENED A COMMITTEE OR COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY TO INVESTIGATE WHY THE SOLDIERS WERE NOT ON LIFE JACKET WHEN ENTERING RIVERINE AREAS. WHY DO WE PLACE LESS VALUE ON THE LIFE OF OUR NATIONAL HEROES. I AM SURE THAT IF IT IS A HIGH GOVT FUNCTIONARY THAT IS GOING TO THOSE AREA, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN ALL NECESSARY FACILITIES TO ENSURE THAT THE JOURNEY IS SAFE. RIP TO THE POOR SOLDIERS.

This current administration is synonymous with bad news. imagine using a small boat with low powered engine to convey Military men to war fronts. what if they were attacked!! and now this men are dead,who do we blame now.
The local divers tried shaaa. they are merciful, imagine rescuing military men that will turn around to attack you.

Your mind is vlose yo the the truth about the incident and you are not saying it.

The soldiers were on an unauthorised trip. This is not a NA boat they were travelling in. No NA boat is underpowered. Indeed the fact that civilians were witnesses to it and tried done rescue confirms it. They left their posts without permission and commandeered a boat for a trip to Yenagoa. Might even very well be woman related trip or assignation.

When I was Corp Member serving in the Creeks of Southern IJAW BAYELSA State few years back. Ordinary NYSC made it compulsory for every Corper to have a life jacket fastened on whenever & wherever you want to go on the river.... Even if you want to cross the river to the Village across.


So like some of the posters above me asked who is to blame

"I SAY ITS THE GOVT THAT SENT THOSE POOR MEN OUT THERE BECAUSE THEY WENT OUT IN SERVICE TO NIGERIA AND BABA ( or his Appointed officer in charge of the Army affairs) FAILED THEM."

So RIP to the Gallant Soldiers that lost their lives.
