Pray For Your Leaders

1 Tim. 2:1-4

The Bible enjoins Christians to pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17). This is to say that we should be praying continuously until something happens. We are not praying alone for ourselves, church, and family, members but we should pray for “kings and those in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Tim. 2:2). The responsibility of praying for our country should be taken serious. John Knox pray for Scotland in his time and his Country was transformed, we can do same thing for our country and Christ will reign in every nooks and cranny of our nation.

Point of Emphasis: Pray for kings and those in authority.

Prayer Point: I will not fail God in playing my responsibility of praying for the kings and those in authority in the name of Jesus.

BACKGROUND

Christians are in the world but not of the world and as such, they are admonished to respect the government of their temporary abode which by extension is the will of God also a way to show the world where they are temporary residents and sojourners how orderly their permanent abode in heaven is. This lesson is timely because of the many dirty reports emanating from the polity and the supposed leaders which continue to leave so many despondent and disappointed with no reason to follow or respect such institutions. This reminds of a conversation that once ensued between a father and his son, “My boy,” said a father to his son, “treat everybody with politeness, even those who are rude to you; remember, you show courtesy to others, not because they are gentlemen, but because you are one”. The word of God is still our standard, irrespective of the prevailing situation; there is never a good reason for doing a bad thing.

NOTES ON THE TEXT

PART 1: BE SUBJECT TO THE GOVERNING AUTHORITIES (ROM. 13:1-6)

This epistle of Paul was believed to have been written in 58AD, some four or five years after the edict of the Emperor Claudius which banished the Jews from Rome. The Apostle discusses the subject of the duty which Christians owe to civil government; a subject which is extremely important, and at the same time exceedingly difficult. There is no doubt that he had express reference to the peculiar situation of the Christians at Rome and more importantly by extension to all the Christians the world over. There seems to be a picture that looked like a republic amid other republic; Christians profess supreme allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord; He is the Lawgiver, the Sovereign, the Judge. It became, therefore, a question of great importance and difficulty, what kind of allegiance should be rendered to earthly authorities.

Both the Jews claiming to be special people who should have supreme rule everywhere and the Christians under the notion of being God’s peculiar people might be infected with the unruly and rebellious sentiments of insubordination to any rulership that is not Divine. This act grounded on native restlessness would have in several instances given a cause of suspicion to the Roman government who in turn would be glad to expel persons considered dangerous to the peace and security of the state.

The apostle had to come in to show the Christians that despite their honours and privileges as children of God, they are bound by the strongest obligations to be subject to the civil governing authorities for the following reasons:

First, there is no authority except from God, He is the Owner and origin of all powers, and the supreme Governor of the universe. Second, He delegates authority to whomsoever He wills; and though in many cases the governor himself may not be of God, i.e. may not be a Christian, yet civil government is of God; for without a government there could be no society, no security, no private property; all would be confusion and anarchy, and the habitable world would soon become disorderly and eventually uninhabited.

PART 2: THE CHRISTIAN AND DUES TO THE GOVERNMENT (ROM. 13:6-7; MK. 12:16-17)

The due the Apostles enjoins us to pay to the government as God’s minister includes taxes, customs, fear and honour. He appeals to our conscience as Christians and not only because of the repercussion that might follow, but most importantly because of how we are called and the high standard we are to set for the people of the world. The motive for civil obedience should come not only from a desire to avoid God’s wrath or that of the state but also the conscience that is instructed by divine revelation. The task of the government is divinely ordained and it requires financial support. The Christian is duty bound to pay his dues to the state because as a beneficiary of it, he owes it some payment in return.

Be rigidly just at the discharge of your dues; withhold not from the state, what the laws of God and your country require you to pay. Tribute to whom tribute; this word probably means such taxes as were levied on persons and estates. Custom to whom custom; this word probably means such duties as were laid upon goods, merchandise etc, on important and exports; what we commonly call custom. Treat all official characters with respect, and be obedient to your superiors.

Honour to whom honour. Never behave rudely to any person; but behave respectfully to men in authority: if you cannot even respect the man, for an important office may be filled by an unworthy person, respect the office, and the man on account of his office.

PART 3: THE CHURCH AND CIVIL GOVERNMENT (1 TIM. 2:1-4; 1 PET. 2:13-14)

The Church’s sphere of authority relates to the civil government at the level of morality. The church has the responsibility to comment on the morality of the governments and their policies on the basis of God’s word, but should not appropriate to itself the power to set such policies. The church should be the reference point and guide for the government when sensitive issues are to be considered, hence should steer clear and not rubbish itself. Every compromise the Christian or the church gets involved with make the same lose voice when it really matters. All God wants from us is to contact without contamination. We need to win the world over to the Lord Jesus, we need to influence our world but we must not let the world because of any reason turn the table against us.

Also Christians are to urge governments to fulfill their proper role. They are to pray for the government to be successful so that we can all live peaceably in all godliness and reverence, Christians are to obey and yet watch over civil governments, though sounds complex, to watch over and yet obey; by reminding the rulers that God ordained them to rule, protect and to keep order.

CONCLUSION

The subject of the duty which Christians owe to civil government; a subject which is extremely important, and at the same time exceedingly difficult is being considered today. There is no doubt that the Apostle Paul had express reference to the peculiar situation of the Christians at Rome; but the subject was of so much importance that he gave it a general bearing as Christianity is to extend to the uttermost part of the age as Jesus prophesied. Summarily, Christians are to submit to authorities and people in position of power. They are to respect the constitution, obey the law, pay their dues and above all, live as Ambassadors of Jesus who endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy that was set before Him. However, Christians are to take a stand when the laws interfere with the right of conscience; when they are commanded the worship of idols, or any moral wrong, then it is their duty to refuse submission.

QUESTIONS

Why did Paul ask Christians to obey the state i.e. Government?

Those who resist “The power are said to be what in Romans 13:2?

Name the dues you are supposed to pay to the government. Do you have any justification for not paying any of them?

A man or woman who finds himself or herself disrespecting official character will soon find himself or herself doing what?

Mention some of the duties Christians are to perform for the Government.

God Made Man In His Image And Likeness

Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7

Man was the peak of God’s creation, made as male man and female man are different from all other creations with the special dignity to reflect God’s nature and image and to make relationship and fellowship between God and the man easy. God wanted man by creation to rule and dominate all His works of creation and as His representatives and deputies, with ability reflected in the human capacity for communication and relationship with God. That the spiritual controls the natural is an established fact even from creation. When the use of a thing is not known, its abuse is inevitable. But God gave man the divine ability to name other things created and to know their use.

Point of Emphasis: God made man by design for relationship and dominion.

Prayer Point: Help me Oh Lord to understand the essence of my existence.

The Fall Of Man Distrupted The Relationship

Gen. 3:1-10

Whenever anything that is treasured and fragile falls, the result is the breaking, shattering and distortion of its original image. The story of the sin of Adam and Eve, our fore parents which by extension affected the whole human race is a representation of the fatal fall from a height so high and glorious to a depth so shameful and hopeless. The fall left the image that was erstwhile good and enviable, battered and distorted not only in Adam and Eve but all their descendants – the human race. Sin has a sting that sinks, shrinks and makes one stink. Man retains the image structurally but not functionally, and man became alienated from God, lost relationship and fellowship and man became slaves of sin. Sin reduces, debases and disgraces. Old time photography treasures the dark room for the development of film negatives and as such any life given to sin is lived in darkness in which everything negative thrives so well.

Point of Emphasis: Sin has a sting that sinks, shrinks and makes one to stink.

Prayer Point: God give me power over sin and let your image be restored functionally in my life so that I can relate with you properly

Roads That Lead Nowhere

Acts 4:5-12

The fall of man left him an orphan with no relationship and fellowship with God as he was sent out of grace to disgrace. God being a loving Father pitied man’s fate and, therefore, adopted many measures by which man might be restored back into fellowship and relationship with Him. God adopted measures by which man might be restored – He first used the law and later the prophets including other means which failed. Religion is man’s effort to reach God – the fallen nature made man incapable to live up to the demands of fellowship and relationship with God because the power over the flesh is lost. Man’s effort has led to the springing up of so many religions and modes of worship but there still remains a vaccum in man crying for occupation apart from many religions, man has made many alternative road to God. All other roads apart from Jesus lead to hell.

Point of Emphasis: Religion is man’s effort to reach God and it is inadequate to secure a relationship with God.

Prayer Point: Help me oh God to know how to travel on the right path so as to end at the right destination.

God’s Loving Grace

Jn. 3:16-17

The human race got it wrong but God is saying, I still love you”, I don’t want you to die and waste away, I still desire a relationship with you, your sinful nature and past notwithstanding, I have catered for you by sending Jesus. Because of His love, He sent Jesus to save us from the impending doom and its fatal consequences upon the whole human race. The transition from this terrestrial life to the great beyond has no rethink or exit opportunity once you embark on it and as such God is showing love which should be reciprocated by accepting Jesus as salvation is a gift which is activated by acceptance. It does not fall on all and it is not imputed on anyone without his or her consent. It is a gift that must be accepted. Since relationship must involve at least two parties, God’s loving position towards mankind is fixed and positive, He is waiting for you to come on board. He has played His loving role, the deal is only completed by your loving role of accepting God’s golden offer that brings you back to a loving relationship with Him. Mind you, it cannot be enforced, you need to decide for Him today.

Point of Emphasis: Salvation is a gift which must be accepted.

Prayer Point: The death of Jesus and His shed blood will not be in vain over my life.

Regeneration

Jn. 3:1-8; 4:34

As it is in the natural, so it is also in the spiritual, birth signifies the beginning of either a natural life or the spiritual life. The story of the new birth and regeneration are central to the restoration of the lost relationship and fellowship with God. Regeneration is an act of God alone in which He renews the human heart and makes his spirit come alive again to relate and fellowship with God. in regeneration, God acts at the origin and deepest point of human person to affect the functional distortion caused by sin. This work of regeneration and new birth is effected by the Holy Spirit quickening us to spiritual life from spiritual death by changing the disposition of our heart, inclining it back to God as the inclination and disposition of the heart reflects the real man – Jn. 14:16-18. Regeneration begins the process of restoring God’s image in our live. Since regeneration is spiritual rebirth, have you experienced it in your life?

Point of Emphasis: The Holy Spirit works upon our heart to change our person.

Prayer Point: Lord, let me experience the new birth and sustain my relationship with you.

Love: An Evidence of New Life

1 Jn. 3:14-18

One receives the life of Christ at the point of accepting Him as one’s Lord and Saviour. The Bible gives an assurance of being born again in 1 John 3:9 by saying that, “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God”. The seed of God in this verse means the nature of God. As the nature of God if holiness, so is His nature love. The Bible even says God is love. This, therefore, implies that anyone who claims to be born again possesses God’s nature of love. This love is practical. It is relational. It is the direct opposite of hate. Another basic assurance of being born again and having eternal life, according to this passage is love. Anyone who hates his brother or sister is a murderer. He has no portion of eternal life because no murderer will enter God’s kingdom. If you have Jesus in you, you must demonstrate it by acting in love to the brethren around you. Show a true love to that widow, orphan, and hungry brethren around you today. You can by so doing raise a hope of eternal life in them.

Point of Emphasis: Prove that you have the new life by loving in deed and in truth.

Prayer Point: Lord, I receive the seed of love and ability to demonstrate it in Jesus’ name.

The Greatest Fellowship

Matt. 11:28-30

In today’s passage, Jesus made a universal call to all human being who want to fellowship with Him. Fellowshipping with God through Christ is the greatest fellowship. If you answer this call, He will give you rest as you continue to learn from Him. He is the only one who can forgive sin and make everything new in people’s lives. The call of Jesus to this fellowship is to all the oppressed (they that are heavy laden) and weary. To those who have no hope of escape from the bondage of Satan. When you answer the call, He will give you peace and rest. You will also learn holiness from Him, you will learn meekness and consecration from Him. You will then know how to persevere to the end.

Point of Emphasis: Come unto Jesus for the greatest and rewarding fellowship.

Prayer Point: Oh Lord, help those who have not answered this call to answer quickly and help all of us that have answered to continue to learn from you and live like You.

BACKGROUND

Relationship is simply a significant connection or similarity between two or more subjects of discussion. In social term, it centres on how do I get along with others. The greatest relationship was demonstrated in ambition by God. He created us in His image and likeness so that we can have fellowship with Him. Through Adam and Eve’s transgression, the bubble burst, yet God reconciled us through His Son – Jesus Christ, what a love. This week’s lesson is based on the greatest relationship which is divinely shown and displayed by God towards mankind.

NOTES ON THE TEXT

PART 1: THE GREATEST LOVE STORY (JN. 3:16; ROM. 3:8, 23-25)

John 3:16 summarised the whole Bible in one sentence “For God so love the world, that He gave His only begotten Son…” This gives us an insight to unconditional love displayed by God that is wide enough to embrace anyone in the world who believes in Him.

The greatest love was done at the expense of the Lord Jesus Christ who paid the supreme sacrifice for us on the cross of calvary. Man does not merit to be loved by God because all have sinned (Rom. 3:23) Though man loves conditionally but God demonstrated His greatest relationship toward us unconditionally.

God set forth Christ as a propitiation to show His greatest relationship to mankind through love. He needs not to be persuaded before showing us mercy. However, anyone who wishes to benefit from the greatest love in believing in Jesus Christ must take these three steps (Jn. 3:16)

Have sure conviction that Jesus is the Son of God and the only Saviour for lost mankind.
Surrender to have fellowship with God and live in complete obedience to Christ Jesus.
Have absolute trust that Jesus is both able and willing to bring you to a final salvation and to fellowship with God in Heaven.
Note: The word ‘not perish’ denotes escaping a dreadful reality of eternal punishment.

PART 2: IT IS ALL ABOUT CHANGES IN NATURE (GEN. 1:26; GEN. 2:7; 5:3; 2 COR. 5:17)

The Bible gives us account about the creation of man. Gen. 1:26 and 2:4-25 give us two complementary account. Man and woman were created in the image of God. We were specially created to respond and have fellowship with God. We are not products of evolution. We are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14). God specifically imparted and breathed into the first man. This shows a unique relationship of divine life to human life (Gen. 2:7). It was the same unique image that Adam passed to his Son (Gen. 5:3)

Human nature became corrupted through sin. Man knows what is good but lacks the ability to do it. Therefore, he became ineffective. The remedy for restoration is made possible through Jesus alone. No one comes to God except through Jesus Christ (Jn. 14:6)

The fallen nature must be renewed for anyone to enjoy God’s greatest love. The restoration of sinners to fellowship with God is achieved through Christ’s work of redemption. God made those who accept Jesus Christ by faith to become new creations. Believers become new creations and are renewed after the image of God, sharing His glory (2 Cor. 5:17; Co. 3:10)

God has removed the hostility, barrier of sin through the atoning death of Jesus. All that a sinner needs to do is to forsake his sin, change his nature and become a child of God through Jesus.

PART 3: LIKE-MINDEDNESS IN RELATIONSHIP (AMOS 3:3; 2 TIM. 2:19; EPH. 1:4)

Relationship requires agreement to thrive. Amos 3:3 says “can two walk together, except they be a greed? No real fellowship can exist between two people unless they agree on fundamental truths. This shows that a person cannot have a genuine relationship with God unless he or she accepts His word and term.

Despite the increase in false teachers (Matt. 24:11) and many straying from the truth, God knows those who remain faithful. Those who belong to Him must turn away from sin (2 Tim. 2:19). Paul describes those chosen by God in Christ as those destined to be holy and blameless (2 Thess. 2:13). Election of mankind is only in union with Jesus Christ – it is “Christocentric” – He is the first of all the elect of God (Matt. 12:18) while the election to salvation and holiness is always certain for the body of Christ, the certainly for individuals depends on personal living faith in Jesus Christ and having a like mind with Him on things relating to divine injuctions.

CONCLUSION

The greatest relationship and love that one can enjoy in this world is to have harmonious relationship with God. It is certain for the body of Christ to continue to experience the deepest love ever made available through Jesus Christ, each individual must thrive to avail themselves this relationship by making holy living a culture.

QUESTIONS

In your own word, explain John 3:16 as the greatest love story ever in history

At whose expense was the greatest love made possible, what did he do?

Mention the three steps that anyone who wants to benefit from the greatest love should take.

Proof that man is not an object of evolution

What is christocentric?

Memory Verse: Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authorities except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God (Rom. 13:1) NKJV.

SUMMARY
The subject of the duty which Christians owe to civil government; a subject which is extremely important, and at the same time exceedingly difficult is being considered today. There is no doubt that the Apostle Paul had expressed reference to the peculiar situation of the Christians in Rome; but the subject was of so much important that he gave it a general bearing as Christianity is to extend to the uttermost part of the age as Jesus prophesied. Summarily, Christians are to submit to authorities and people in position of power. They are to respect the constitution, obey the law, pay their dues and above all, live as Ambassadors of Jesus who endured the cross and despised the shame for the joy that was set before Him. However, Christians are to take a stand when the laws interfered with the right of conscience; when they commanded the worship of idols, or any moral wrong, then it was their duty to refuse submission.

SUMMARY
The greatest relationship and love that one can enjoy in this world is to have harmonious relationship with God. It is certain for the body of Christ to continue to experience the deepest love ever made available through Jesus Christ. Each individual must thrive to avail themselves this relationship by making holy living a culture.

Recovery And Restoration Through The Word

Isa. 29:17-24

Isaiah’s prophecies of God’s judgment are never without hope. There is a later assurance of a hopeful future. He envisioned that in the last days of this age, the humble and poor of Israel will turn to God. The rejection of Israel is only partial and temporary. They will eventually accept God’s salvation in Christ. Their present failure to respond to Christ is not due to an unconditional divine decree, but to their own unbelief and disobedience (Rom. 10:3). The salvation of individual Jews depends on faith in Jesus Christ through the gospel, because there is no fixed decree of God which offers salvation to a set of people and another which makes the other set doomed. Recovery and restoration comes through the word of God. Obey God’s word today through faith in Christ and become a child of the Living God.

Point of Emphasis: Recovery and restoration is made possible only by believing the word of God.

Prayer Point: Lord, make me a fruitful field (v. 17) and do not allow me to be put to shame. Help me to recover all that You have purposed for me.

Verse 24 reveals that the death of Jesus Christ results in help for the afflicted (v. 26) and the preaching of the gospel in all nations (v. 27). He rules over all the nations. All the nations of the world will worship the Lord and submit to His rulership. Jesus reigns, let the world tremble before Him.

The Needs For The Gospel

Rom. 3:21-26

Nobody is born a saint. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (v. 23). God executes His redemptive plan through Jesus Christ so that we can be reconciled to God. God made Jesus Christ to pay for our sins so that we can be in right relationship with Him and be liberated from the power of sin. There is a need to preach the gospel to make everybody come to the knowledge of the truth. The only condition God requires for salvation is faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. The atoning death of Jesus has the power to produce the full desired effect of redemption when appropriated by faith. As a believer, you must proclaim it.

Point of Emphasis: Proclaim the power of God for salvation which is constantly fresh and relevant.

Prayer Point: Having been saved, help me to preach the gospel on daily basis.

The Invisible Power Of The Gospel

Acts 2:36-43

Peter preached the gospel with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; He succeeded in doing great exploit for the Lord. The promise which Jesus had earlier made to His follower was in action. In pouring out the Spirit, Jesus intend that the Spirit would mediate His presence to believers and empower them to continue to do all that He did while on Earth (Jn. 14:12). The invisible power of the gospel was displayed when Peter preached the gospel for couple of minutes: sinners repented and came en-masses. The same result can still be achieved by you if you will endeavour to live a holy life and preach the gospel under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Point of Emphasis: Maximum result will be achieved if you preach the gospel under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Core Message Of The Kingdom’s Gospel

Matt. 4:12-17

In Matt. 3:1-12, John the Baptist’s role as precursor to Jesus is emphasised and his message is described as one of repentance and preparations. A school of thought says that the arrest of John served as the stimulus for the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. The passage read this morning gives an account of Christ’s preaching in the Synagogue of Galilee. In fulfilment of prophet Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 9:1-2, Jesus preached the core message of God’s kingdom to the people so that those who lived in darkness could come into the light that gives salvation. Christ put a great respect upon John’s ministry when He preached the same core message of repentance which John had earlier preached to the people (Matt. 3:cool. The core message of the Church should centre on repentance so that genuine repentance can be accompanied by the fruits of righteousness.

Point of Emphasis: Let not the preaching of repentance cease in our church.

Regeneration: Power Of The Gospel

2 Cor. 5:11-21

Paul asserted that all men must appear at the judgment seat of Christ. He enjoined Christians to consecrate their lives to Christ. The apostle mentioned two things that are necessary in order to live for Christ, these are regeneration and reconciliation. Divine grace enables us to have a thorough change of heart. Regeneration power makes us to act from a new perspective inherited from Christ Jesus. You must evaluate your life if it’s reflecting Christlike life, because if you are truly born-again and regenerated, you must truly be a new creature.

Point of Emphasis: Regeneration comes only by the power of the gospel.

Reward For Gospel Proclaimer

Dan. 12:1-3

Daniel prophesied the time of trouble for the nation of Israel in fulfilling Jeremiah 30:7 but they will finally place their faith in Jesus as their Messiah, Lord and Saviour. Verse 2 contains the clearest Old Testament reference to the righteous and the wicked. He says the wise who show the wisdom (verse 3) by the way they live their lives and how they lead others to righteous way of life shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, transformed and the glory of God will reflect in and through them. Since we have such a wonderful promise for the proclaimer of the gospel, why don’t you make it a point of duty to preach the gospel always?

Point of Emphasis: There is great reward for those who proclaim the gospel.

Prayer Point: Holy Spirit, give me grace to proclaim the gospel so that I can be rewarded.

BACKGROUND

The understanding of the gospel of the kingdom is very important as to make success of our Christian race. There are things we should know about God and His kingdom. This week’s lesson conveys to us what we need to know about the expedience of living a holy life to please God and how to subscribe to and live in the kingdom of God.

NOTES ON THE TEXT

PART 1: BACKGROUND OF THE KINGDOM (MATT. 5:20, 18:3)

We regard God as sovereign over all things. The Old Testament bears witness that ‘God reigns’ both in the kingdom of God among men and the kingdom of His providence (Ps. 93:1; 95:1). The kingdom of God is significant in the nation of Israel, the declaration of the gospel and presence of the church. In both Old Testament and New Testament, we discovered that God rules sovereingly as King over all His works.

Regrettably, man resisted God’s reign by following the enticement of Satan. This is against what Jesus implied in Matt. 5:20 that an iota of His word must not be violated. Jesus canvased for a change from those who had transgressed against His word in Matt. 18:3. With time, the gospel spread to the gentile nations.

Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of God has two aspects. The reign of God became a reality in the New Testament through His proclamation and ministry, climaxed in His death and resurrection. It is necessary for us to understand Jesus’ teaching and central claim, that the kingdom of God is near (Matt. 12:28) because the long awaited day of salvation in the Old Testament has now been realised in the New Testament.

PART 2: REASON FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM (MATT. 3:7; ROM. 3:23; 1 JN. 1:10)

The Pharisees and the Sadducess were the two prominent religious groups in Judaism. The Pharisees adhered strictly to both the entire Old Testament and their own human interpretations. They emphasised that salvation came by obeying the letter of God’s law. Their religion has to do with outward form without inner change of the heart. They refused to acknowledge the depravity of their own nature.

The Sadducees on their own were theological liberals and anti-supernaturalists, they appeared to hold on to the law of God but they denied many of its teachings like resurrection, angels miracle, immortality and the judgment to come.

The ignorance of these groups of people made them unqualified for the kingdom of God. What necessitate the gospel is the need for people to accept God’s offer of mercy in order to become the citizen of God’s kingdom. Rom. 3:23 affirms that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The fallen state of man made man to run foul of acceptance before God but through the mercy of God, the gospel of God’s salvation which gives room for second chance was proclaimed. The act of God’s goodness to forgive sin and pardon people of their guilt is the heart of the gospel of the kingdom.

PART 3: REQUIREMENT AND REWARD FOR THE RECIPIENT (MATT. 3:1-8; 4:17; 5:19)

Christ came to inaugurate His kingdom by preaching ‘repentance’. This is a free decision on the part of sinners made possible through grace given to them as they hear the gospel. Jesus began His ministry by preaching repentance to the sinners (Matt. 4:17) He went to where the sinners were and preached the gospel of the kingdom to them. This was what John the Baptist centred his message upon – Matthew 3:2. So, also some prophets in the Old Testament.

The primary requirement for becoming a member of God’s kingdom is stated in Matthew 3:8 ‘bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. It can, therefore, be deduced that fruit of righteousness must follow genuine repentance. Fruit of righteousness must be evident in the life of a believer who has forsaken sin. Anyone who claims to believe in Christ and has true saving faith does not live life that does not produce good fruits. This fruit-bearing refers to spiritual virtues, such as the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Gal. 5:22-23 - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control.

It is expected of anyone who is obedient and possesses these virtues to witness God’s power in his or her life here on Earth. Because being a member of God’s kingdom is to proclaim God’s power and thereby enjoy forever in that kingdom.

Genuine believers are given the inner compulsion and power to fulfil God’s will – Rom. 8:13; Matt. 7:21). Those who walk uprightly according to the gospel are made great in the kingdom of God. The reward of believers in the kingdom of heaven will be determined by their attitude toward God’s commandments, that is, teaching and obeying them (Matt. 5:19).

CONCLUSION

God’s intention for all mankind is seen in His kindness which He had shown through the gospel. Let’s endeavour to be faithful to the requirement of the gospel and allow our external confession of Christ be accompanied by inner transformation of our hearts. (Matt. 5:21-28)

Be Born Again

Jn. 3:1-8

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Jewish council. He believed that Jesus was sent by God having heard and seen what He had done. He came one night to give Jesus compliments for the miracles He had performed. It was the issue of being born-again that was paramount in the heart of Jesus. He told Nicodemus frankly that “verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born-again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (verse 3). This was repeated in verse 5 to show the importance of the subject matter. The issue is as vital today as it was in the days of Jesus’ ministry. The starting point of entering into God’s kingdom is that you must be born-again. It is a core course that any believer who wants to make heaven should take it serious. Irrespective of the name you may claim to bear or whatever people call you, if you are not born-again, you are just deceiving yourself.

Point of Emphasis: You must be born-again.

Prayer Point: Lord Jesus, I have realised the importance of being born-again, I surrender my totality unto You; be the Lord over my life and help me to tell others about you.

Jesus is the Living Bread that God sent to mankind, and you were drawn by God to Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit (v. 14). The drawing is not automatic, you have the liberty to reject it though Jesus says “I will draw all men...” (Jn. 12:32). Believers receive spiritual life by believing in Christ Jesus and sharing in the redemptive benefits of His death on the cross (Rom. 3:24-25). Anyone that wants to have spiritual life must remain in fellowship with Christ and His word. Jesus calls Himself the “Bread of Life” (v. 35) and portrays Himself elsewhere as the word of God. In Matthew 4:4, He says ‘man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God’. The promise that those who feed on Jesus will have eternal life should prompt you to hold on to Christ no matter what you are passing through.

Point of Emphasis: Christ is the Bread of Life.

Paul emphasised that any believer who commits sin is a slave to sin. One of the requirements for entry into God’s kingdom is to forsake sin. You must submit yourself to the standard teaching and conduct, based upon apostolic instructions which are outlined in the word of God. Anyone who professes to be a member of the household of God should give total attention to sound doctrine or teaching given in the pastoral letters. For you to know that you are part of the kingdom of God, check if your conducts are in line with the word of God. BACKGROUND

In the secular world, those who wish to change their citizenship would study the laws and regulations that govern the aspired country’s naturalisation process. Becoming a citizen of another country is not automatic. The law guiding this process varies from country to country. This is why the applicant must study the law well so that he can complete the process and succeed in his bid to becoming a citizen. This week’s lesson affords us the opportunity to look into the qualifications necessary to enter into the kingdom of God.

NOTES ON THE LESSON

PART 1: SPIRITUAL NECESSITIES (JN. 3:3; MATT. 5:20)

God’s word contains the plan of God for His people and how they can do His will. There are basic fundamental Bible tenets that believers should know in order to make heaven. Jesus mentioned a foundational doctrine of faith in John 3:3. Without new birth, one cannot see the kingdom of God and receive eternal life. The primary qualification is that one should be born-again or regenerated.

The following are the basic facts about regeneration

Regeneration is a renewal of spiritual life in human heart by God through the Holy Spirit (Rom. 12:2; Eph. 4:23-24).

Through this process, eternal life from God is bestowed on the believers’ hearts (Jn. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:4; 1 Jn. 5:11)

This experience makes one to become a child of God and a new creature in Christ (Jn. 1:12; 2 Cor. 5:17; Col. 3:9-10).

The person no longer conforms to the standard of this world but becomes a new person, which is created in righteousness and true holiness (Rom. 12:2; Eph. 4:24)

Regeneration is a compulsory qualification for anyone who wants to be part of God’s kingdom. Before turning to Christ, all have the Adamic nature – spiritually dead and lack the power of obeying God (Ps. 51:5; Rom. 8:7-9; Col. 2:14)

Regeneration comes only to those who repent and forsake their sin and turn to God (Matt. 3:2)

It is made available for those who put their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Jn. 1:12)

Those born of God, do not make sin a habit (1 Jn. 3:9).

The ones who continue living in immorality and giving themselves to worldly living, no matter what they claim to be, are children of the devil (1 Jn. 3:6-10)

PART 2: SPIRITUAL FOOD AND PERSONAL FAITH (JN. 6:53-63)

The importance of food for growth in the physical cannot be over emphasised. Same applies to our spiritual growth. When a believer is regenerated, he or she needs spiritual food.

When we believe in Christ Jesus and share in the redemptive benefits of His death, then we receive spiritual life. We will continue to have spiritual life as long as we remain in fellowship with Christ and His word. The words of Christ are Spirit and life (Jn. 6:63). This means that we partake of Christ as we remain true to Him and prayerfully receive His word. Jesus is the living word while the Bible is the written word (Jn. 1:1-5; 2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:21).

Our relevance in God’s kingdom depends on our reading, obeying and absorbing its truth into our hearts. The implication of John 6:57-58 is that the person who stops feeding upon the bread of life will stop growing.

PART 3: SYMPATHETIC WORKS REQUIRED (MATT. 5:3, 10; 25:34-35)

Believers should know that they are not spiritually self-sufficient, we need the Holy Spirit’s power and sustaining grace to inherit the kingdom of God (Matt. 5:3). We must be ready to suffer persecution for the sake of Christ (5:10) Outward works of love and kindness are some of the things that believers must do to those belonging to Christ and people that are suffering. This is taken as part of true faith and salvation. The wicked will not be allowed to enter Christ’s kingdom (Matt. 25:41-44).

Believers who will inherit the kingdom must persevere because things that could offend one would surely come, but it is only those who endure until the end that shall be saved. We must depend on Christ for strength. He strengthened the souls of the disciples so He is able to do same for us (Acts 14:22). We must equally continue in faith and love believing that all will be well (Jam. 2:5).

CONLCUSION

The kingdom is a reality which has its rules and regulations that must be kept before one can be allowed to enter there. We must, therefore, abide by the required standard to enter there so that we may not run our Christian race in vain.

QUESTIONS

What is the foundational doctrine of faith mentioned by Jesus in John 3:3?

Explain what is meant by ‘Regeneration’.

How can believers continue to grow spiritually?

What is the implication of Jn. 6:57-58 to a believer?

The Beatitudes

Matt. 5:1-12

We have the beginning of Jesus’ teaching on the mount which centres on God’s principles of righteousness that all Christians are to live by in order to be blessed of the Lord. The attitudes expected of Christians which can be exhibited through faith can only be achieved through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Ordinarily, it seemed that Christ introduced a higher law of living in His kingdom. If you have faith in Christ and belong to His kingdom, then you must live your life in intimate union with Him by letting your character and attitude reflect the sermon on the mount. As you determine to live by these higher codes, you will be a peculiar treasure to God.

Point of Emphasis: Have intense hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Prayer Point: Empower me O Lord to live to please You with my conducts

Believers As The Salt Of The World

Matt. 5:13

Salt is valuable to give flavour and preserve from corruption. Believers must be godly examples in the world. You must resist the moral decay and corruption that is evident in our society. If you decide to become lukewarm and compromise, you will be trodden upon by the ways and values of the ungodly society. Always bear it in mind that you are the salt of the world; don’t lose your values. As salt in the world, every Christian should examine his or her character whether he is salt or not, or whether they have lost their saltiness.

Point of Emphasis: Be the salt of the world.

Prayer Point: Help me O Lord not to lose my virtues and values.

Believers As The Light Of The World

Matt. 5:14-15

The Scriptures refer to Jesus as “the light of the world”. He is able to bring light to those who stumble in spiritual darkness. His life shows us the best way to live. Experience in the world teaches a universal truth: without light, we experience fear, temptation, suffering and darkness. Since you are called the light of the word as a believer, spend some time to examine various areas of your life where you need the light of Christ so that you can shine the more for Christ. One of the characteristics of a Christian is to shine to reflect what Jesus calls him. How do you shine? By your good deeds.

Point of Emphasis: Shine, because you are the light of the world.

Prayer Point: I will shine because I am the light of the world in the name of Jesus.
