President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday reminisced about the conduct of the 2015 general elections, saying it marked a watershed in the nation’s political history.

Speaking in Abuja at the Leadership Annual Awards, Buhari said he and other actors in the elections were led by the higher ideal of the future of Nigeria and the well-being of the citizens rather than the mere desire to win elections.

He said it was the commitment to this ideal, the patriotic zeal of former President Jonathan, the impartiality of the electoral umpire and exemplary conduct of the political parties, foreign pressure and other actors “that we collectively disappointed the prophets of doom who had predicted the disintegration of the country after the 2015 general elections.”

Buhari said the nation’s democracy had been strengthened by the outcome of the 2015 elections as Nigerians now have more faith in the electoral system in the sense that their votes would count when choosing political leaders at various levels.
He said the political class should build on the experience of the 2015 elections to nurture democracy.

Buhari, who co-won the Leadership Person Award of the Year with his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan and former INEC Chairman Prof. Attahiru Jega, said the honour was another public acknowledgement of their various roles and contributions towards the national rebirth and development of democracy in Nigeria.

The president said they were humbled by the honour which, according to him, would inspire them to redouble their commitment to the progress of democracy and development of the country.

He expressed hope that the awards would encourage all those recognised to remain committed to good behaviour in their various endeavours to justify the recognition and serve as inspiration to others.

people need to understand that GEJ made that call for a reason. He could have still accepted that result without making that call. But there was a widespread fear that between the final announcement of the results by INEC and GEJ's next public speech on the election result, the country would have been aflame. That GEJ call disappointed the prophets of doom.

Our president should understand that our democracy is still very fragile with the way he runs the affairs of this country.
Secondly, the unity of this country is yet to be bonded if some sections of the country or some ethnic groups are still seen as second class citizens.
For the election, what made him believe the election wasn't manipulated in every area including threats just to favour him.
I just pray he does the right thing at the right time so the future generations will never term him a failure in both terms of his administrations.

I was a staunch Buharist but to be honest am very disappointed with him, instead of forging ahead he always talks about blaming others.

When Obasanjo took power from the military He also met a terrible government, he also met oil at about $20 per barrel but did not keep lamenting but hit the ground running, till he turned around the economy, He increased wages, paid all the debt accumulated by the military, he also saved money in excess crude account but iin the case of Buhari at every given opportunity he laments about how he met the government.

Is very true Buhari met Nigeria in bad shape but he made it worse in less than 18months, for now even if he will take us to how he met us we will be happy. Buhari major problem is his sturborness and vendetta.

However the only visible success Buhari has is in the fight against Boko Haram which we commend but he is totally zero in managing an economy

Obviously God knew the kind of leader Buhari will be that is why He could not be president on three occasions but when we insisted He answered our prayers to see the reason he was not successful three times.

Government owns only 10% of Nigeria GDP, so to a good manager of economy even without government money the economy can thrive through good policies for the private sector but as it is his policies have made business to suffer while foreign investors ran away buying forex at whatever rate to repatriate their capital thereby giving the naira pressure and it lost it value significantly,

One thing I learned with Buhari presidency is it takes more than integrity and incorruptability to be a good leader and manager of economy.
