Anglican Church Seeks Descendants Of Ajayi Crowther by shinystar(m): 6:31pm On Oct 26, 2016
The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, plans to trace descendants of the foremost missionary and first black bishop of the Anglican Church, late Samuel Ajayi Crowther for reunion.

Bishop Ajayi Crowther (1809 – 1891) was born into a Nigerian Yoruba village of Osogun in modern Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State and captured into slavery during a raid.

The little Ajayi found himself in a Portuguese slave ship in Lagos but a British vessel hunting for slave traffickers intercepted the ship and freed the slaves on board, including Ajayi.

He later grew up to become a missionary, linguist, translator, educationist and campaigner against slave trade before his death.

Anglican Bishop and Rector of Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Andrew Igenoza, said the church is interested in locating descendants of Ajayi anywhere in the world.

Igenoza spoke with reporters on Wednesday during a briefing to unveil programmes commemorating Crowther week.

According to him, the Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta, Ogun State, is championing the cause of tracing Ajayi’s descendants.

He noted that the first daughter of Ajayi Crowther was married to Herbert Macauley while the Dr Stella Adedavo who died of Ebola, had links to the late first Black Bishop.

According to him, a well known lawyer practicing in Lagos State is also a descendant of Ajayi.
