The real reasons why the former Plateau state governor, Senator Joshua Chibi Dariye recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress, (APC), was to avoid jail term as a result of graft proceedings against him by the government.

Close sources to the ex-governor in Abuja, said that the Senator representing Plateau Central at the Senate has been put under intense pressure by top echelons of the ruling APC to defect his party of over seventeen years and get a ‘waiver’ and reprieve from the numerous cases against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

Aljazirahnews reports that Senator Dariye is facing trial over alleged misappropriation of over N12 billion state funds while he was the chief executive of Plateau state between 1999 and 2007.

His case has refused to go off the public space since his debatable let-off under the ex President Olusegun Obasanjo administration when he escaped impeachment for same allegations.

Aljazirahnews learnt that the leadership of the ruling APC having realized that the incumbent governor, Simon Bako Lalong was Dariye’s political stooge as speaker for the same eight years Dariye served as governor, decided to explore the political strategy to court him back to Lalong’s side to beef up the hold of the party in the state.

It was not clear as at press time to ascertain which of the APC faction (El-Rufai or Tinubu) led the political deal that eventual brought Dariye on board but an highly placed source confirmed that the EFCC trial was used as bait.

Another strong reason that pushed Dariye off his former party was his age long rivalry with the ex-sports minister, Hon. Damishi Sango.

The latter was elected state chairman of the PDP in Plateau state against the advice of Dariye.

Close sources to the duo told Aljazirahnews that Senator Dariye held a strong belief that his political career might been sealed under Sango, who connived with ex president Obasanjo to disgrace him out of office until the court reversed the impeachment.

Then, come the much powerful ‘Mantu power cabal’ led by another political enemy, ex Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Mantu. Mantu it was learnt is bent to get a fellow kinsman to replace Dariye at the 2019 senate.

With this political permutation widely endorsed by Sango and other key stakeholders, Dariye’s effort to get back into the senate under PDP remains a dream hence the last resort to defect to APC.

A former aide to the late strong man of the middle belt politics, Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, [name withheld] told Aljazirahnews that Dariye’s quest to wear the large shoes of Chief Lar, could have motivated him to join the likes of Senator George Akume, Senator Barnabas Gemade and Governor Lalong in order to emerge as the leader of the zone.

However, this line of thought was dashed when reports credited to the heir apparent to the Lar dynasty, Hon. Barr. Beni Lar, dismissed the Lar family’s support for Dariye.

Beni Lar, currently representing Langtang North and South at the House of Representatives, is herself eyeing the governorship of Plateau under a PDP arrangement.

She was quoted to have said her father’s shoes were ‘too large for a defecting Dariye under APC as the late emancipator was the founding chairman of the PDP.’

Aljazirahnews also gathered from a reliable source that “the defection of Dariye may have brought her candidature closer to ex governor David Jonah Jang.”

For Dariye, “the two need to work together for a better PDP and Plateau in general”, the source added.
