The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has got a major lead into how a judge under its investigation got N18 million from the Managing Director of a leading oil and gas company to buy a house in London while still serving as a Federal High Court judge. The anti-graft agency stumbled on the fresh lead while interrogating Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, one of the six judges being probed over alleged corrupt practices while serving in the Temple of Justice.

The female judge, who turned in herself to EFCC for questioning last week, and is undergoing routine questioning by the security agents over suspected cash receipts, admitted that she actually got the said N18 million as a soft loan from a ‘family friend’ who happens to be a major player in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil industry with a view to buying a house in the United Kingdom. A top source, who confirmed the discovery of the amount in the course of investigating the judge, the amount was wired to a foreign account from the judge’s domiciliary account for the purchase of a property in the UK.

The agency did not however disclose the location of the property in the UK, apparently not to hinder investigation. But to get the truth about the ‘loan allegedly granted the judge by the oil tycoon, the EFCC last night began questioning the MD of the firm. The man was at the office of the commission last night and it was not clear if he would be released as at the time of filing the report. A top EFCC source told Vanguard that the money was transferred by the businessman to Justice Ajumogobia’s account in 2012, pointing out that there was no paper to indicate that it was a loan, as claimed by her.

If the EFCC cannot tie the amount to any fraudulent act, then Why come on air to pass a wrong message. They should be thorough in their jobs without the need to always embrace the media

It doesn't prove anything. They should establish a case before squealing to the press.

Yes, the EFCC talks too much on what shld be its private documents, but the public gives them room to talk as well. Ppl are too quick to criticise them anytime they make high profile arrest which makes them give too much information to the public to justify thier actions.

.from what was reported on this thread, this woman has not committed any offense. The EFCC "s case against her is solely based on suspicion and that my friend cannot secure a conviction in a Court of law. There is no crime in Nigeria against a judge buying a house in London. The EFCC is yet to Link her to any crime

The EFCC has not concluded their investigations and besides from the following below

A top EFCC source told Vanguard that the money was transferred by the businessman to Justice Ajumogobia’s account in 2012, pointing out that there was no paper to indicate that it was a loan, as claimed by her.

It shows she must have been 'paid' for a judgement delivered during the period the money was wired. Do you loan such an amount of money out without any paperwork?

Though you may say its family to family or close friends to close friends, an ordinary narration in the wire transfer advice should have at least indicated for the records such transaction. I'm sure if EFCC comes across such, they might have a second thought. For now ...let them continue investigating.

It would be sad if the findings prove that the said load was actually a pay off, it would mean she's a perpetual liar. Recall during the siege, she lied being under intensive care at the hospital and she was not there.

****

"No businessman will give such an amount to a judge without something attached"... Is this a statement of fact or a very ridiculous and baseless presumption? Which law forbids anybody, judge or not, from receiving gifts or soft loans from friends or relatives?

So because I'm a judge, my billionaire brother or old friend cannot 'dash' me N100 million without something attached? Is it not the duty of the lazy and incompetent EFCC to investigate whether 'something was attached' or not? If they cannot find evidence of a criminal 'something attached', then they have no case - even if the gift or so-called loan was $1 Billion!
