A country without sufficient electrical power capacity cannot be described as industrialized in any part of the world today.
To further buttress this asseveration, it is pertinent to consider a few countries and compare the populations with current power capacity.
The united state of America with a population of 307 million has a generation capacity of about 995,000MW. China with a population of 1.3 billion generates approximately 713,000MW and the United Kingdom with a population of 62 million generates close to 74,000 MW. Over here in Africa, South Africa with a population of 49 million generates a capacity of 36,000MW and Egypt with a population of 77 million generates roughly 23,000MW of Electricity. Coming home, Nigeria with a population of over 150 million currently generates a minuscule 4,500MW. However we need to generate 10 times the capacity to be at par with Egypt in terms of capacity per population.
It has been mooted that Nigeria requires about 100,000MW generating capacity to be in the bracket of industrialized countries. The cost of implementing this project may well exceed our annual GDP several times over.
Nigeria is in horrendous need of improving the power sector; hence the government has stressed her caprice to improve electricity generation to 6,000MW by the end of this current year. It is thus apposite to ask the following questions: is the target feasible given the current state of the nation electricity capacity? What should be the long term gibbosity towards electricity generation? Given the state of economy how can it work pari passu?
