The presidency has warned that Nigeria, currently Africa’s largest producer of cereals and grains, risks famine from early next year due to the huge demand in the global market for the country’s surplus produce.

Giving the grim forecast in a radio interview in Kano monday, a spokesman of the president, Garba Shehu, told Pyramid Radio that the “huge demand for our grains in the global market is creating an excellent environment for the mindless export of Nigerian grains across our borders and unless this curtailed, Nigerian markets will be bereft of food by January next year.”

When asked what the government was doing to avert the frightening situation, the presidential spokesman said Buhari had asked the Ministry of Agriculture to present a quick plan for the purchase of surplus grains to be stored in warehouses across the country to save for the rainy day but opined that there was the need for moral pressure on exporters by traditional and religious authorities to curtail the depletion of the home market.

The presidential spokesman said the Ministry of Agriculture had advised the president on the need to draw the attention of all Nigerians to this issue which, if not addressed promptly, could lead to a shortage of grains in our country by January.

“Over the past year, providence has blessed Nigeria with a bountiful harvest of grains, more than enough to feed the country and to export to other countries. At present, there is a high demand for grains from Nigeria, from African countries as distant as Libya and Algeria, and from places as far away as Brazil. However, the ministry of agriculture has raised concerns about a massive rate of exportation, which could lead to a shortage of grains in Nigeria by January,” Shehu said.

He explained that Nigeria currently enjoyed a free market situation.
He said: “President Muhammadu Buhari is not in any way opposed to or intent on tampering with that. On the other hand, exporters also have a moral obligation to make their produce available to Nigerians who live within our country’s borders, to ensure that our citizens have access to food.”

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity also said the Ministry of Agriculture estimated that no fewer than 500 trucks laden with grain leaves Nigerian markets every week, heading for countries outside our borders.
He identified the major markets involved in this exportation as the Dawanau market in Kano, Naigatari in Jigawa, Bama in Borno, and Ilela in Sokoto, as well as three other main markets in Kebbi State.

He further explained that Buhari had on various occasions reiterated his plan for Nigeria to become a food-producing giant, self-sufficient to the point of depending very little on imported food.

He said: “This noble plan could easily be defeated by the pull of the foreign market if food continues to leave our shores to feed people elsewhere. If care is not taken, Nigeria could face a famine by January,” he stressed.

“Building our country into the edifice we envision it to be will require sacrifice and strategy from every single Nigerian. Let us remember that charity begins at home.”

Free Market.

How do you expect me to invest so much in my farm without any government input or intervention and be compel to sell locally?

Farmers are free to sell their produce in any market where they can maximize their profit.

Buhary administration is only supporting Farmers on the pages of newspapers and media.

If Buhari is only supporting farmers on the pages of newspaper then how are they able to produce so much that they can export
And if u dont sell your crops locally because u want quick cash, you will still end up spending all that cash when the cost of goods and service skyrocket. Its simple logic. Money is good, but not at the expense of your country!

When there's no basic amenities such as good roads to transport these goods and services.

Police men mounting toll gate at every mile just to extort drivers drivers who convey this goods.

With hike in PMS. How would any farmer be happy to sell in nigeria when first, there's no enabling environment to sustain their services to maximize profit.

They all want to make gains and not to render that effort homeless. Even if its me, I'll do like wise until the government put things right to encourage them fully. Not only by giving out seedlings.

Can you tell me one area this clueless government is supporting farmers. For the first time after return of democracy farmers brought fertilizer at N10000 to N12,000 because of non government subsidies on fertilizer. The guy is right buhari's support is only on the newspapers.let me remind you I am Buhari supporter but let us tell ourselves the truth this government is clueless. What is the purpose of billions if naira spent in buildings grains salons across the nations. A proactive government suppose to buy the surplus and keep.

to some people, we became self sufficient in 18 months to the extent that we now export all our grains.

when it is said this regime has no direction, garrulous folks grumble.

on assumption of office, PMB opened up our grain silos & distributed it all without saving for the rainy day (as his loyalist love to say).

an organised government knows that you need to restock those silos ASAP & the best way to do that is you pay your farmers a fair price, in advance (preferably) for a percentage of the harvest/yield.

what this does is that among other benefits,

1. it guarantees the farmers a certain level of income.

2. it creates price stability as the farmer cannot sell that percentage going to government above the agreed price & if the farmers try to increase the price of the other percentage by a margin that's too high, the government simply floods the market with its share.

3. it makes the farmer work extra hard as he will still want to produce more in order to have extra on the side to export.

4. it protects your farmers from external price shocks of other items as they can restock early if paid in advance.

It is a fat lie! There ain't any bountiful harvest rather harvest is lean and the usual export which govt denies claiming no diversification will drain the grains!

You know u can make useful suggestions and even criticise constructively without insulting the person you claim to support.

First of all there is no point in nigeria's democracy that fertilizer was cheap for farmers. It was only cheap on the pages of newspaper but we had cabals running the show behinde the scenes. Your statements are illogical cos if it is true that farmers didnt get any support from govt, then how were they able to produce so much?? So much as to meet international exporting standards??

And more importantly, if u read the post before jumping to comment u will see that govt is already putting action in place to avert the shortage. So why come here to make noise and insult the person u claim to support Tell yourself the truth: you are a typical wailer and nothing govt does will ever be good in your eyes.
