Failed Nigeria’ motion sparks uproar in House of Reps
By Our Reporter Published Today News Rating: Unrated
The House of Representatives yesterday had a near rancorous debate on a motion which sought to debunk insinuations that "Nigeria is a failed state."

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Sani Minjibir, generated sentiments as members dismissed the assertion that the country should be classified a failed state.

But the motion almost ended on a bad note when Hon. Bala Ibn N’Allah attacked former Speaker Patricia Olubunmi Etteh over her contribution that parties should entrench internal democracy in their affairs.

Minjibir expressed surprise at the cover story of the Tell of October 5, 2009 entitled: "The making of a failed state."

He said though Nigeria was grappling with lack of adequate power supply, youth unemployment, hunger and insecurity, these were enough for the publication to conclude that Nigeria was a failed state.

Members who contributed agreed that the country faced challenges, but not "peculiarly grave to qualify her as a failed state."

Hon. Mohammed Ndume noted that though it was unacceptable to say the nation had failed, recent development indices showed the nation is "failing."

"The World Economic Forum has said recently that Nigeria’s infrastructure is one of the world’s worst," he said.

Nigeria is a failed state.

1. We export crude oil, but import fuel. When armed soldiers are needed just to sell petroluem products, what else do we have as diginity?
2. In democracy, people are not allowed to choose their leaders. Criminals are imposed on the people as their leaders.
3. There is no respect for our apologetic law and human life.
4. Our police extort money openly without fear or favour, contracts are not awarded without kick backs. The other day, a taxi driver was handcuffed because he refused to pay the N50. extortion fee.
5. Our apologetic laws respect persons; those who stole billions are free but those stole N10,000 can rot in jail.
6. Only those in opposition or those who fall out of favour are corrupt
7. Some of our graduates cannot write their names; becuase passing is no longer based on knowledge but on money.
8. We have no idealogy as a nation, we dont have a direction.
9. We are so ethnicly and religiously diversed that we sleep with one eye open. Nigerians suspect one another.
10. National Patriotism is not in our character.
11. All Nigerians are equal but some are more eqaul than others.
12. Our professionals are running away to where they will have more value.
13. I can go on and on and on.

Nigeria is a failed project. If we really want Nigeria, we must go back to the drawing board and start all over again.
Now is the time.
