The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to quickly assent to the passage of the bill for the enactment of an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps.

President of the apex students body, Comrade Aruna Kadiri of UniBen, made the appeal during a press briefing on Saturday November 26th in Benin, Edo State.

The bill (SB. 173 and 183) which passed third and final reading in the 8th Senate on Thursday November 24th according to Kadiri if signed into law will contribute to bringing down Nigeria’s unemployment rate.

“If the bill is assented by Mr President, the unemployment situation bedevilling the Nigerian youths will reduce as the bill will go a long way to adequately empower, develop and provide alternative employment for the Nigerian youth,” he said.

Aruna explained that the Peace Corps will train and equip youths in Nigeria with knowledge for peace education, conflict mediation, intervention, reconciliation and confident building adding that they will be deploy to all tertiary institutions, secondary schools and primary schools to maintain law and order, curb drug abuse and cultism in schools.

“It will increase the culture of peace among Nigerians, including the spirit of volunteerism, nationalism, patriotism, communicate service and nation' building,” he added.
