Hello all, this issue of one introducing him or herself with either my name is OR my names are has indeed generated a lot of controversies/constructive criticism. I could remember when I was still in secondary school, my teachers back then said the proper way to introduce oneself is; My Names Are Ibrahim Ayo Nnamdi. Fastforward to few years later, when I was in level 200 in uniport (NOTE; presently in final year), one of the lecturers taking us on Nigerian constitution said the proper way of introduction is my name is ibrahim ayo nnamdi. So please nairalanders and scholars in the house, which do u think is more correct? "MY NAME IS" or "MY NAMES ARE"

BOTH ARE CORRECT,

one is for ONLY FIRST NAME MENTION,
while the other
IS FOR FULL NAME

wrong! the plural applies to only more than one person.. just like you have a 'PAIR' of 'SHOES'..

That's the correct way to introduce yourself! Don't ever mistake the many names as meaning "are"....here we are talking about you "one body" "one person"...

People should go back to Brighter Grammar English 1...

How many people owned that name, if it. Is only you it is singular but if it is owned by 2 people it becomes plural. My name is ibrahim chukumah. Correct. Their names are ibrahim and chukumah.

A name is a set, so it is my name IS not ARE.

both are correct, but it depends on the way you use it. i. e
my name is kehinde. am using 'is' because it is a single i mention out of my money.
my names are Akinleye olorunphunmi kehinde, the 'are' there indicate that it is plural, i mention at least three out of my names

It is another example of terrible english commonly used in Nigeria. the question is direct; what is your name? then Nigerians go ahead to say my names are....... this makes no sense whatsoever.
The correct thing is 'my name is ......'

HOW do you mention your phone number? Do you say "my phone numbers are" or my phone number is"?

The correct standard english is - my name is. . .(followed by your first or full names, as the case may be).

Also it depends on how the question comes, cuz one can walk up to someone to ask pls what ur names: meaning u should tell him every name u bear, n in response u will to answer with " my names are"

There is no context where my names are is correct,even if you want to use my names are.....then your name na legion.

There is no such thing as "more correct"! It's either correct or not.

In this case, "MY NAME IS" is the correct form.

"MY NAMES ARE" is used by thieves and those with multiple identities.

It's so sad that the latter is common in Nigeria. No thanks to dumb high school teachers.

The surname, firstname and other-names are a pair that makes up your full name.
So, "my name is" is the correct form.

A human name = The first, last amd middle names, so the right one is "is" and not are, just like gsm mobile phone number is supposed to be 11 numbers, u cant say my mobile phone numbers are 08023245448 because they are 11digits

In the case of 'is' example: My name is Felix Taju Kayode in the case of 'are' example: My name is Felix Taju and Kayode
