The Nigerian army will develop a new strategy to tackle insurgency as President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the troops to escalate its efforts.

The president also urged them to work closely with other security agencies to develop new strategies to eradicate insurgency and address other current security challenges.

Buhari gave the task in Owerri on December 5, Monday, when he opened the 2016 Chief of Army Staff Conference

According to the leader of the nation, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, the new strategies should be key focus of the conference. “I assure you that I will diligently study the report and recommendations resulting from the conference and implement those recommendations that practicable and implementable, ’’ the president said.

The country's leader recognised the sacrifices so far made by “gallant officers and soldiers of the Nigerian army in protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this great country’’.

“ These efforts have led to the dislodgement of insurgents from areas hitherto viewed as their strongholds. “It has also led to the rescue of abducted persons, relocation of internally displaced persons to their abandoned communities and gradual return to normalcy in the north-east.

“The effort has almost stabilised the security situation in the Niger Delta and other parts of Nigeria.

“The spectacular achievement of the security agencies in the fight to defeat terrorism, insurgency and militancy in Nigeria reinforce my earlier position that these threats would soon be a thing of the past.’’

Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar announced today that Nigeria bought warplanes and helicopters from Russia and Pakistan that will be used to counter terrorism in the country. The US is supporting the Nigerian military by providing training and intelligence assistance, but has denied to sell arms to Nigeria as it is concerned over alleged human rights abuses committed by the army.

No matter the strategies developed insurgency will forever remain in Nigeria. You can only reduce the level of insurgency but bringing it to an end is a no no.
The government's mistake was letting it grow in our society.
