What Has Gone Wrong For Nigeria's President Buhari? Bbc-africa Report by iliyande(m): 12:55pm On Dec 08, 2016
Muhammadu Buhari was the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria

In our series of letters from African journalists, Mannir Dan Ali, editor-in-chief of Nigeria's Daily Trust paper, looks at why the Nigerian president is finding it hard to please anyone.
Muhammadu Buhari's second coming as Nigeria's president one-and-a-half years ago was greeted with a lot of hope and excitement.

There was a collective sigh of relief when he took over from the lacklustre Goodluck Jonathan, who symbolised everything that was wrong with the then ruling party.

Eighteen months down the line, many Nigerians are openly asking whether the 73-year-old president has what it takes to lead Africa's most populous state, given the enormous challenges that the country faces.

While the president has gained some kudos for his efforts to tackle corruption and for the fact that the military now has the upper hand in the fight against militant Islamist group Boko Haram, which at one point held large swathes of territory in the north-east, little success has been recorded in other areas.

As President Buhari has said, he had the misfortune of coming to power at a time when very low oil prices meant the import-dependent and oil revenue-reliant country was paying a high price for its expensive habits.

"Nearly halfway into his four-year term, Mr Buhari is yet to make some key appointments to drive his vision"
Nigerian leaders, and especially Mr Jonathan's government, never planned for the vagaries of oil prices, which have plummeted from more than $100 (£79) a barrel in 2014 to just above $30.

Mindless corruption ensured that the extra income was carelessly spent and even money allocated for purchasing arms to counter Boko Haram's insurgency was allegedly pocketed by individuals or diverted to political campaigns.
Mr Buhari admitted he felt like absconding from the job when he found how bad the situation was when he took office in May 2015.

Having won the election on his fourth attempt, Nigerians expected the former military ruler to have an idea or two about how to fix the country's main challenges: Poor infrastructure, lack of electricity and high unemployment.

Even his wife took the unprecedented step of criticising him publicly in a BBC interview where she said she might not support him again if he ran for another term in 2019.
Nearly halfway into his four-year term, Mr Buhari is yet to make some key appointments to drive his vision.
It took him six months to assemble a cabinet and, eight months after the death of one government minister, that post remains vacant.

With many key officials yet to be replaced, there is an air of tentativeness in the operations of many government departments.

It is in the area of the economy that there is even more dissatisfaction given the recession that the country is experiencing.

'Investors are no fools'
The unofficial devaluation of the local currency, the naira, higher food prices and job losses have all made life more difficult for families. Many people just manage to have a meal a day.

The following phrase trended among Nigerians on social media recently: "We are no longer asking President Buhari to develop Nigeria. At this point we are only asking him to return Nigeria to the state it was before he became president."

Facebook postImage FACEBOOK
Concern was raised about the doubling of the price of food items and the more than 50% fall in the value of the naira.
Similarly, the business community and those with knowledge of the economy are unimpressed with some of his key economic advisers and the direction they are taking.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who supported Mr Buhari's election but who has a reputation for sounding like a one-man opposition party, has come out to oppose some of the economic policies of the government, such as the idea of borrowing about $30bn.

"If we do not fix the economy to relieve the pain and anguish of many Nigerians, the gain in fighting the insurgency and corruption will pale into insignificance... Economy neither obeys orders nor does it work according to wishes," Mr Obasanjo said.

"It must be worked upon with all factors considered and most stakeholders involved. The investors, domestic and foreign, are no fools and they know what is going on with the management of the economy, including the foreign exchange, and they are not amused," he added.

As things stand now most Nigerians are hoping that President Buhari and his team will get their act together to pull the country out of its biggest economic downturn since the return to civil rule in 1999 - and prove that it was not a mistake to invest so much hope in the man who promised to fix the limping giant of Africa.

Deep.

A well written article, devoid of any pull him down sentiments. True to what the writer said, corruption is at a record low in this Country.

Hopefully, by the time he gets to the 2 Yrs mark, the economy would have improved.

There is still hope for Nigeria.

Who told you corruption is at an all time low? People in public office are still stealing like its business as usual. The only difference is they more discreet about it. Buhari isnt really fighting cortuption, all he doing is 'debt recovery' from previous office holders. You will know Buhari is fighting corruption when 'Egunje' to Police, Army and other armed forces is no more. You will know Buhari if fighting corruption when the massive extortion happening in wharfs, Airports, boarders and other ports of entry by customs, immigration and FAAN have stopped. You will know that Buhari is winning the war on corruption when you can walk into any state Government office, demand a copy of your states income and expenditure for the previous months and it is given to you.

Buhari hasnt even started fighting corruption.

That is the exact question in the mind of most of us who bought and sold the Buhari brand for the 2015 elections.

But you don't need to break a sweat to know what has gone wrong with Mr (or he would rather be addressed as a sheikh) Buhari.

Buhari obviously wasn't prepared to govern. Added to his administrative defficiencies, he placed nepotism, religion and chroneism above competence and national interest. Look how far we've gone.

And thats what makes Buharis case worse. He is not a novice to Government house, he has been there before.

He ran 3 times before winning on his 4th attempt. How can such a person still not be prepared to govern? How is it that Buhari couldnt survey the Nigerian situarion and come up with a vision of where he wants to take Nigeria? The man came in and made a bad situation worse.

Incompetence cannot be hidden and cannot be disguised by former endorsements and beliefs.
Its disgraceful for any president, not to be compared to the performances of Obasanjo or YarAdua, but to the fisherman.Thats a standard that has no standard.

You know, hungerbad, no one has to agree with you views on Nairaland,
But,
At least , post things that people can take you serious for.

That " corruption is at a record low in this country" really really betrays any shred in integrity that you have, or pretend to have.

Such outlandishly silly and false statements make you sound like one these paid online praise singers, which I am sure you are not.

Do you or your idol, Buhari, even understand what corruption is ?
I don't think so.

But it was reported that when some people mentioned duke name to obasanjo that time, he said no no no.
Because obasanjo wanted some people he could control.

His senseless performance and greed disgraced yorubas.

He wasted the opportunity.

That pays credence to the fact that Buhari has a different, albeit sinister agenda hidden in his sleeves. Radically different from the ideals that forced some of us to support him.

What then would happen wen Bubu's tenure ends and we can't find any one with the same zeal to fight corruption.Would it therefore mean that we re back to square one and we will begin to go round in circles again?
.Wat we need are actually strong institutions and not strong individuals according to Obama......

I see this scenario playing out soon esp wen u re in a system that is so bedevilled with corruption that it has become a part and way of life of a people. As far as I am concerned,he is just a lone voice in the wilderness,to some people he should just complete his tenure and get his ass off that seat, citizens re tired already and they don't care if corruption is being fought tooth and nail.

And since he has concentrated on just fighting corruption and getting rid of it as the cardinal point of his administration, does it then mean every other thing should be on hold or the citizenry should die of starvation, maybe it's only wen these start happening on a larger scale that he would then come to the realization that actually more damage than salvation is being done.....

Please, I do not really agree with you that he's creating an atmosphere where people are scared of stealing. If he actually wants to show he is serious about it, he would have started with his election sponsors, party men and supporters. That will send a strong message to all and sundry that it is no more business as usual. However the President's penchant to swoop on the opposition while leaving out his loyalists (despite the hue and cry of selective fight and witch-hunting) is just sending out the message that you can steal but just support the president or join his party so as to be insured (as many politicians have been doing). Yes, most of the people being arrested and or tried (over the media) are guilty just like the average Nigerian politician. To me, it appears the whole essence or motive behind this 'fight against corruption' is just to stiffle every opposition to Mr president's future ambitions. I pray the president proves me wrong. God bless Nigeria.
