You shouldn't expect the price of rice to drop to the level it was when there was no ban in its importation. The reason been that it is cheaper to import rice than to produce in Nigeria. That is why local rice couldn't compete with imported rice then.

if we have a 2nd largest farm in Nigeria DAT produces 8300 metric tonnes a year.
it means there is a first largest that produces more tonnes
and there's are other small small farms DAT produces little like unibadan DAT
produces 100 bags a year.

if we have all this manufacturers why haven't we been self sufficient in rice production all
this while? why can't govt just intervene and help external economics of scale for this people? tax holidays n subventions,
are these things not practical?

Largely because most of the rice we consume here in this country is imported....and also because we do not produce enough for local needs.....as most of the rice produced in Nigeria is via small scale farming which isn't enough to satisfy demand.

Farms like Mr Williams' are the exception. If there were more of them, we won't need to import rice.

Also, your large scale farmer still has to import a lot of the equipment needed for the farm. That raises costs.

When we increase the amount of rice produced in Nigeria....and when we cut production costs too.

As an example....Nigeria produces 2 million metric tonnes of rice(2008). Thailand (the country we import from a lot) produces 25 million metric tonnes of rice.

Thailand also uses half its arable land for rice production. Nigeria does not.
