For a long time, Nigerians have always been talking and discussing about the need to become food sufficient, especially in some of our most imported agricultural products such as Rice, Wheat, Sugar Etc. So much Ado has been ado concerning the topic, but have you at anytime wondered which states are the top performance in terms of rice production? Nigeria is one of the largest Rice importing countries in the world. Nigerians' appetite for rice means that the country imported nearly 17 million tonnes of it over the past five years. Duties for imported rice are currently at 60% and consumers have seen the price of a bag of rice double in the past 12 months. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the country imported 2.3 million tonnes in 2016, about half of the country's estimated requirements. The most recent nationwide covering data from all regions of the federation from the Nigerian Agric sector report shows that these are the top Rice producing states and regions in the country. According to the, 29 of the 36 states of the country engaged in the cultivation of Rice, with total cultivated areas amounting to 2,432.63 thousand Hectares of land, while n average of 4,472.52 metric tons of rice was produced by all the states. Largest Rice Producing States: (in 000/metric Tons) 1- Kaduna State - 732.42 Metric Tons 2- Ogun State - 636.67 Metric Tons 3- Kano State - 422.05 Metric Tons 4- Taraba State - 401.99 Metric Tons 5- Benue State - 341.48 Metric Tons Largest Rice Producing Regions: 1- North West - 32% of Production 2- North East - 25% of Production 3- North Central - 17% of Production 4- South West - 16% of Production 5- South East - 9% of Production 6- South South - 1% of Production http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-38795673 The Nigerian Agric sectr report: https://www.google.ca/search?q=Nigeria+agric+sector+report&oq=Nigeria+agric+sector+report&gs_l=psy-ab.3...2476.2476.0.2950.1.1.0.0.0.0.302.302.3-1.1.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..0.0.0.r8y10RQGs68 30 Likes 7 Shares |

Interesting. The Federal Government should empower local rice producers in ogun state being the highest rice producing state in the south and Second in the Country, the same way they are presently producing all the necessary incentives and infrastructure to rice farmers in the North West. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

What was lost in the SS is more than compensated on the basis of being the home to the major source of nation's income and infact mostly due to oil spillage. But what I don't understand is what exactly is the SE contributing in this obodo? What exactly does the word "parasitism" mean? 246 Likes 21 Shares |

Are you telling us that Abakaliki rice is a Scam? My Goodness, South East is just mediocre at everything, I don't take them serious anymore. Whenever a South Eastern "Yoot" tells you that he produces 1 million tons of something, better be rest assured that it is not more than 100 Kilograms. 181 Likes 9 Shares |

.... Ofada rice from Ogun state is VERY delicious. Those who are aware of what is actually going on in the country's rice industry would know that ogun has been one of the to rice producigng states in the country for a very very long time. www.nairaland.com/attachments/5036161_img20170320223426_jpegfce863288c8bc51ae3fb0d741a03ecec www.nairaland.com/attachments/4862213_fbimg1486984959697_jpeg92c0b1b91c4c85a479327f5f1c7e315d 52 Likes 5 Shares |

nextprince: Here they go again! A very beautiful thread to debate on, you couldn't resist the evil urge in you to turn it upside down. To the topic, if the duties on imported rice stands at 60%, why is the imported rice cheaper than the locally produced ones? Nigeria we hail thee. 75 Likes 5 Shares |

opeaceo: My comment is very much in line with the topic, give the fact that the Igbos on here have severally touted Ebonyi my state and Abakaliki specificaly as the largest rice growing state in the country, and south East as the biggest rice producers in the South. Nobody here is going to forget so soon the Obiano Anambra rice episode and how they said Ebonyi has started the export of rice to other countries. 140 Likes 5 Shares |

The countries we import from subsidise inputs for their farmers and every process from production to processing is fully mechanized. One major problem with rice production here is post harvest losses, large quantities of grains are lost due to manure harvesting and hulling. 4 Likes |

. See the southeast/IPODS, they are almost useless at nothing. Very lazy, what they only know is fake things, drug traffic, 419, money rituals & chest beating. The northerners are still hardworking to me producing the country meat, beans, pepper etc. 90 Likes 5 Shares |

To be Objective, South South really tried. With the massive negative effect that Oil exploration/exploitation have on farming and aquatic life, I expected zero % in rice farming. Then due to the small landmass in the South East Region (which is less than size of Kogi state) I didn't know rice farming will be this high there. Kudos to them. No land can be best at everything. 26 Likes 3 Shares |
