Nigeria Is The 94th Best Place To Live In The World! by magragold(m): 11:39am On Nov 13, 2009
The globally respected Legatum Institute released his Annual Prosperity Index a few days ago and its findings on Nigeria falls in line with the position of some Public commentators that Nigeria is a Failed State! Or how do you explain the fact that we are 94th in the list and our peers in the listing includes failed States like Afghanistan, Somalia, Democratic Republic Of Congo(DRC), Sudan & Zimbabwe.

The Legatum Prosperity Index for 2009 named (in the order of rating) Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Netherlands, USA, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK the best countries to live in. South Africa (the best country to live in Africa) is rated 51, Botswana (56th), Namibia (63rd), Ghana(79th), and my beloved country Nigeria was rated 98th! With this rating, Nigeria found companionship with either failing states or “banana republics” like Tanzania (97th), Pakistan (99th), and Zimbabwe (104th) position. Why a country like Finland spends an annual average of $35,000 per student in the primary and secondary levels, Nigeria spends an average of $3000 per student. Teacher to student ratio in1:16 in Finland whereas it is 1:40 in Nigeria. Our best ranking (16th) was in Social Capital whereas we ranked 99th in Economic Fundamentals and in Governance finding companions in Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan &Zimbabwe!

As someone rightly said “it borders on insanity to keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome”. While the political leadership in this country has not learnt to do things better, our leaders expect things to get better for the common man!

Let me share with you some indices from a country whose history was so much like ours but is now at least 75years ahead of us. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) just released its budget for 2010. UAE is committing 44% of her budget to Education, Healthcare and Social Security. More specifically, it is committing 22% of next year’s budget to Education, yes you heard me right-EDUCATION!!!

How did we get here and is there any hope of coming out of the dungeon for this sleeping elephant called Nigeria? Your guess is as good as mine!

Its naive to make an armchair conclusion that The Legacy Institute placed us where they wanted in the ranks!, talks like this smells like that of one of the beneficiary of the systemic rape and looting that this country have been subjected to in the more than 40years of her nationhood.

An informed and enlightened mind will go and study the reports before taking an intelligent stand on the Legacy Prosperity Rankings 2009!
