Why Kaduna?

Instead it ought to be Minna which is just about 90mins by road from Abuja.

I guess the fact that Minna airport doesn't have any fuel depots within the airport necessitated the choice for Kaduna which is about two and a half hours distance from Abuja by road. This then begs the question about the Kaduna-Abuja rail link constructed by GEJ which the APC govt has since celebrated as being completed by them but is yet to resume full operation. Does this mean that by providing free bus services for Abuja bound passengers from Kaduna airport is just another scam by the APC or is the rail line far from being commissioned as the APC claimed?

Either way, I expect more airlines to use this opportunity to cut more jobs as they will not be able to relocate completely all their staff in Abuja.

Finally, I expect this temporary closure of the Abuja airport to affect only schedule commercial airlines both local and international thereby ruling out the total closure of the Abuja airport to smaller charter jets and even the presidential fleet. Also, I dont see European airlines using Kaduna Airport due to security concerns as they have long since stopped operating from Kano airport (or any where else in the north). That means we should expect British Airlines, Air France and Lufthansa seizing operations into Abuja (or rather Kaduna) out of security concerns. This should lead to more job losses.
you will type one question and contradict yourself again... Your a specialist confusuionist. How will they divert all abuja bound passengers to the train, what then happens to people that already make use of the train service everyday, will you rob peter to pay paul. if the international flights wouldnt land in Abuja, they can as well decide to land in lagos.. Thats their ish not urs, afterall your just commenting on nairaland while others are flying.

Re: FG To Shut Abuja Airport For 6 Weeks by totorimi: 11:39pm On Dec 19, 2016
Is that not a Boko route they now want to expose innocent Nigerians to. The same army boko is slaughtering at will they want us to trust to provide security. Well for me I will not agree to ply that route by road.
If they cannot provide two runways in Abuja at this level of our history too bad.

They said six weeks, not months.

And that road that you say was repaired in Japan had to be closed again because the contractors didn't fix it properly the first time:

I didn't read the whole report but I don't think this should affect the international wing. But if it does, how will they resolve cases of travellers who had booked about two weeks ahead from other countries? All these unannounced changes that characterise this administration is partly responsible for the soaring dollar/naira relationship. I can't imagine myself giving out #480k in exchange for $1k for God's sake. I don't know if this Travelex (or whatever they call themselves) are still working.

Do you think rehabilitating of Plane runaway is the same thing as road construction?

Do u think it is wrong if Abuja airport has 2 or more runways?

This is what bad management causes! There's no other place in the world where a major Airport is closed for 6 weeks (one month two weeks)!

Nigerian govt. hardly maintains anything. They must have ignored the runway maintenance (and looted maintenance fund) until it became worse!

This is why major airports should have more than 1 runway. But at least we have an alternative.

Nigeria still has a very long way to go. The Chinese government would do the repairs in a week. Our 'longthing' long well well!

Nigerian leaders take short-sighted decisions because they know most of the citizens have short memory

How many people can recall that the construction of the 2nd runway for Abuja airport was awarded to Julius Berger in February 2010 but was canceled by the federal government shortly after based on the motion moved in the House of Representatives by the then Hon Dino Melaye (now a senator) alleging that the contract was overpriced at N64b. Nigerians hailed the decision that time.

The second runway would have been ready by 2013 if that contract was just reviewed rather than canceled.

Between 2010 and now, Abuja airport had been closed on many occasions for short periods for emergency repairs of the only one runway that it has. In 2014, a Saudi cargo airplane crash landed on the runway and the airport was closed for three days

No well thought out at all, the distance from Kaduna to Abuja alone is killing beside the roads are bad.
They should increase the trips made by the Kaduna - Abuja train, the travel time is 2 hours, but getting to the Railway Station is another hell. The station is far from the town.
