"Buhari’s Borrowings Will Enslave Nigeria Eternally" – Fayose by miikyphil(f): 12:14am On Dec 21, 2016
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Tuesday said the plan by President Muhammadu Buhari to borrow $30bn to finance the 2017 budget is not good for the economy.

He spoke against the backdrop of Federal Government’s statement that 2016 budget of over N6trn had performed at only about 40 percent.

Fayose spoke at the government office in Ado-Ekiti during the distribution of 7,000 eye glasses to indigent Ekiti people who have bad eye sight.

He said, “If we borrow this much to finance 2017 budget, it means we will continue to borrow even till 2019 and the rate at which this government is borrowing money, I hope they will not plunge Nigeria into eternal debt, enslavement and misery.

“This has been the fear of many who are against taking of $30bn loan. And they will continue to borrow without attempting to concretely tackle the dwindling rate of our currency.

“What the Federal Government is doing is wrong. The FG under President Buhari does not have what it takes to lead this country economically and beyond.

“They themselves confirmed that the 2016 budget performed at about 40 percent or below. So, that is to tell you that they lack the vision, and don’t know what they are doing and are only deceiving Nigerians.”

Speaking about the inspiration behind the distribution of the eye-glasses, Fayose said the scheme was meant to benefit the poor and visually impaired who could not afford eye glasses and whose bad sight has affected their lifestyle.

Anybody supporting this borrowing needs brain assessment. Nobody is talking about the future of our children, but only interested in satisfying themselves currently.

30 Billion dollars isn't much when one needs infrastructure for a population of 170 million people.

If Nigeria cannot pay back a debt of 30 Billion dollars over a set period the country should simply be recolonised.

I'm not against borrowing, I'm only scared that 50% of that money will find its way into the pockets of certain Individuals smiley

Nigeria was already enslaved eternally, before Buhari got there. We may as well build crucial infrastructure.

Hahahaha cheesy ..

..My question is .. If this government fail to secure this loan, does it mean that we won't have positive development, fulfill campaign promises, build infrastructure and get ourselves out of this messy recession

It's like this loan is our only hope of survival embarassed and I urge somebody to stall it and allow us suffer now to save our posterity.

Those who are against the borrowing are simply been mischievous and are the true enemies of the state.
Before this move,Nigeria have a debt profile of about $97B from previous administrations and our present future is not being jeopardize even with visible infrastructural gap.

The hypocrisy about this same opposition is that they are the same group of people who wanted a quick fix and immediate free easy money without recourse to future plans. The same people crying for the future of our unborn children mischievously...smh undecided

Fayose can talk, but the problem is, even if PDP was in charge.....we would STILL be borrowing money.

It all has to do with low oil prices, really.

After all, when GEJ was in power, we still borrowed, even with oil at $100 and above.

What Fayose should be doing is telling the govt to borrow...and spend more money on power, education and transport....which would eventually help us diversify more.

Or we can pretend everything is all right.....till salaries are not paid for 13 months upward.

We are already financially enslaved and our Great Grand Children's financial future mortgaged away.
Jonathan did same, so what's Fayose's problem?

Are You current at all? Crude oil now sells higher than when Jona left office but daily production has not been stable and high enough like it should've been if there was peace and stability in the N/D region, thanks to the senseless comment of 97% & 5% of the president and his obnoxious "body odour" which suggests he hates Eastern Nigeria (S/E & S/S) with passion.

Spirit of sportsmanship from the president and a sound economic team would've been able to manage our economy without going outside to borrow. Some of his party people have even attested to this. We are too blessed with natural and human resources to resort to borrowing when there are opportunities within.

Whatever is left of Nigeria and Nigerians by the time Bubu finishes with us is for us all to endure and pass to innocent generations after us.

As though Ekiti state is not listed among the states to benefit from the loan and as though he has not been benefiting from the various bail out from Buhari.

So much hypocrites in Nigeria.

Nobody said anything about borrowing during campaigns

Because...1) they were campaigning...PDP and APC. 2) Oil prices had not yet dropped below $30 per barrel.(as seen in January-Feb 2016).

The problem is not the borrowing but the reason he is borrowing. Borrowing to pay bogus politicians salary/allowances is a no-no for me.

Just reduce legislators salary by more than 60% and see how Nigeria will work.

oya, abeg, shut up...

Crude oil sells higher than when Jonathan was in office? Jonathan met at $115 and left at $65. Don't talk rubbish abeg.

Jonathan has been borrowing even when the crude oil peaked at $115. And Jonathan met $65billion and left $35billion.

Abeg..

This clown that went to China to pose before an empty hall will say anything to be in the news.$30B to me is even too small to make meaninful impact on the infrastructural development in the country.More so Nigerians believe the money will be judiciously used unlike during the last administration when stealing was not corruption.

What did Fayose know about economy. He knows no better than to buy 5kg of rice and distribute to few people; he knows no better than to entice some few carpenters and old market women with material gifts because of Ekiti 2018 gubernatorial elections in view. ..

That is not true. Crude oil was selling at $90-144 from 2010-14. It was $44 by mid 2015., $30 by Feburary 2016 and now $54.

And the ND was not stable when GEJ was in power....oil was still being looted and stolen via illegal bunkering. High oil prcies obscured the losses from that.

Spirit of sportsmanship from the president and a sound economic team would've been able to manage our economy without going outside to borrow. Some of his party people have even attested to this. I daresay it would....but even if Bubu had been nice to the 5%, it wont have increased our oil revenues at all.

Also, we have a lot of resources.....but exporting them would have made things slightly better. Plus....it takes time to develop siad resources (Oil overreliance= less time to develop other resources).

And even then, we would still borrow.

What we should do is make sure money borrowed is spent on things like railways, roads, power, education and so on...which would help us better diversify the economy. But....it is going to take time. The era of easy cash is over.
