The term, 'revenge porn', also known as non-consensual pornography, is the distribution of one or more sexually explicit photos of someone else, without the subject's permission. Women (usually those who have broken up with an ex-boyfriend), make up the overwhelming majority of the victims of this crime.

Former Miss Anambra, Chidinma, is arguably the most prominent victim of such a crime, following the release of a video in which she engaged in lesbian sex acts, without her consent. Chidinma and other potential victims of this crime, in Nigeria, could seek legal remedy (via government prosecution) under Nigeria's criminal code. Specifically, Chapter 21a of the Criminal Code covers Obscene Publications.
Section 233D provides:

(1) Subject to the provisions of this Chapter, any person who, whether for gain or not, distributes or projects any article deemed to be obscene for the purposes of this Chapter, commits an offence punishable on conviction by a fine not exceeding four hundred Naira or by imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or by both.

(2) A person shall not be convicted of an offense against this section of this code if he proves that he had not examined the article in respect of which he is charged and had no reasonable cause to suspect that it was such that his publication of it would make him liable to be convicted of an offense against this section of this code.

Section 233C sets out the Test of Obscenity which may prove problematic in these cases. Subsection 2 states that:

“The provisions of this section of this code shall extend to any article of two or more distinct items the effect of any one of which is such as to tend to deprave and corrupt, but nothing in this section shall apply to exhibitions in private houses to which the public are not admitted or to anything done in the course of television or sound broadcasting.”

In the United States, there is no explicit federal law prohibiting the act, but 34 states and the District of Columbia have enacted tough revenge porn statutes.

Under California law, revenge porn is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 6 months in jail, a fine of up to $1000, or both.
If the victim is under the age of 18 or the defendant has a previous conviction for revenge porn, then the crime is punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $2,000, or both. New Jersey law prescribes a prison term of between 3 to 5 years and a fine of up to $30,000 for individuals convicted of sharing explicit images without the permission of the subject.
