And in Nigeria, this song has become the anthem of the African Nations Cup.

Salif Keita - Africa

I can't believe you benched Awilo logomba's coupe lebamba...it should make the 'first 11'.

Selif Keita's Ananamin should get a mention...pls listen to that song and give me a feedback... it was quite popular in Enugu during the early days of channel O.

JA Adofo...Nye sem mwe should make top 20 of the list no matter the decade. It's still very popular especially in Onitsha and Aba after about 40 years.

you didn't mention Wais Diop

Loliwe by Zahara.

and I think Diamond on the soles of her shoes was originally sang by Paul Simon.

also Bodyguard by Paul Simon. a yoruba artiste sampled the beat then too.

Thanks OP!!!! I've been searching for this song for years. I used to think it was by Brenda Fassie, I once played almost all her tracks on youtube all because of this song. I knew this song would make your list so I typed each song(from your list) on youtube (starting from number 1).
Thank you!!!!!

Nigeria: The Makossa Madness
By Olumide Iyanda
10 JANUARY 2001
Lagos — The Makossa fever that gripped Nigeria last year is far from over, pushing Nigeria's indigenous music to the background.
Last year, Paris based techno-soukous star, Awilo Longomba, evidently was the most popular musician in Nigeria. Even popular Nigerian musicians like Daddy Showkey, King Sunny Ade, Paul "Play" Dairo and Lagbaja had to share what was left of the spotlight in the passing year. Even as the new year rolls gradually on, there is no indication that Awilo's fame is set to wane

Coincidentally, even I this 2017, this song is been played right now as I am typing this in a night party near by.

I wonder if there is an expiry date to this song. When the song was in vogue then I was still bathing outside... And today, my mates don dey prepare to welcome their 2nd child yet dem still dey play this song for party.
