Abagworo: I consider Nico Mbarga to be Nigerian (he is on my list of 150 Nigerian songs). His mother was Nigerian, he grew up in Nigeria and he was one of the early members of PMAN. https://www.nairaland.com/3439718/list-150-greatest-nigerian-songs 1 Like |

Since nobody has written about this wonderful song, I'm going to write about it. This song takes me back to my childhood. The song was incredibly popular in the 1970s. It's from a 1974 South African musical. They toured Nigeria many times and I think they also staged a performance at FESTAC '77. Lots of Nigerian schools and youth groups also performed this play and these two songs were played over and over on Radio Nigeria. Higher! From the musical Ipi Tombi, this is N'tombia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPV_GyFXn8o 2 Likes 2 Shares |

I've often written about a trinity of African musicians. Well, maybe a quartet. These are the 4 most iconic African musicians (in no particular order). Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Manu Dibango Miriam Makeba Hugh Masekela. A concert was staged at Wembley Stadium in 1988 to mark the 70th birthday of Nelson Mandela, who was still in prison at that time. The NTA showed it live. There were so many fantastic performances at that concert, but two remain etched in my mind: Tracy Chapman performing "Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution" and this song by Hugh Masekela. Masekela performed a duet with Miriam Makeba (who is also his ex-wife), Miriam Makeba performed Pata Pata, then Hugh performed this song (which was released just a year before the concert). Bring back, Nelson Mandela. Hugh Masekela - Bring Him Back Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG3oKb2JQow |

scobaba: This song was on heavy rotation on NTA2 Channel 5 in the late 1980s. The group was originally known as Golden Sounds but they changed their name to Zangalewa due to the popularity of this song. President Paul Biya made them honorary members of the Cameroonian Army and entertainers to the president. Shakira covered this song in the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup. Her version is called Waka Waka, This Time For Africa. Zangalewa of Cameroon - Zamina Mina Zangalewa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmC_YHGweLs 2 Likes 2 Shares |

And I remembered the song after I created the thread. Brenda Fassie had two songs that were popular in Nigeria in the late '80s and early '90s. I included "It's Your Wedding Day" in this list, but I couldn't remember the name of the second song, so I omitted it. Then, just a few minutes ago, I caught myself humming the song. I can't find any video or information about the song online, but I remember the lyrics very well. Mi do do, do do, do la do ti, 1 Like |

Thanks Naptu2. You have no idea how much this means to me...it came at a time I'm organising an African event at my institution; so I've shamelessly created a new playlist in which more than 60% of the songs are from your list. The song "Welela" brought so much memories, I almost teared up listening to it! Thank you again. You're awesome!!! 6 Likes 2 Shares |
