Open your eyes and see the true picture, this has got nothing to do with one Nigeria or otherwise. We have so many native speakers who don't understand their Orthographies. The implication is that they might be able to speak but not write. It is affecting my Urhobo till date. I learnt Yoruba in school, took my time in researching and studying its orthographies, as well as rules. All thanks to that, I'm multi-lingual today.

Almost all Nigerian languages are dying. Every state Government must understand that it is their sole responsibility to uphold and protect the tradition and culture of where they govern. It cannot be the English language all the time.

I get your point. One of my teachers way back then in secondary was an Igbo woman married to a Yoruba man. Mrs Anifowose's understanding of the Yoruba language is impeccable. She was my motivation for taking the Yoruba language at the time.

Fast forward to the present day, it is not just about 'teaching' or understanding Yoruba as a non-native speaker. If you don't have at least an NCE or B.Ed, you won't be considered surely. The educational sector has taken quite a beating in the past and this is why you see a failed lawyer taking up a teaching job to becoming a government teacher.

Then again, you must understand that the instruction, according to the National curriculum says that every Nigerian student must be able to fluently speak and write at least a Nigerian language. The Hausas have been doing this perfectly and effortlessly, the same applies to some parts of the SW such as Osun and Oyo state.

Truth is, we don't expect another Nigerian language to be given due attention like the Yoruba language because Lagos, though often called a no man's land, belongs to the Yorubas. The same applies to Enugu. You don't expect another Nigerian language to flourish more than the Igbo language, else a possible case of extinction might occur.

Bottom line: So long you towed the teaching line as a Yoruba graduate, where you are from doesn't really matter. Most Yoruba folks around today can't even speak and write the Yoruba language as I do, let alone understand its orthography called 'akotan'.

The government of those day preach peace and unity. You get to any government settings, you feel you are a Nigerian and every students related so well with the teachers. They don't feel out of place.
