The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report which appeared on page 10 of Thisday Newspaper of Thursday March 16, 2017 claiming that the N49million recovered by operatives of the Commission at the Kaduna international Airport on Monday March 13, 2017 was a stunt purportedly intended to sway the senate to confirm Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu's nomination as EFCC Chairman.

This claim, which the newspaper attributed to ghost sources in the Senate, to say the least, is ludicrous, smacks of mischief and intended to rub in the unfortunate proceedings of March 15 in the Senate, where Magu’s nomination as EFCC Chair was rejected.

Quoting an unnamed Senate source, Thisday reported that “the N49million was allegedly planted by officials of the EFCC at the airport exactly one day to Magu’s screening and confirmation by the Senate to give the semblance of an agency head that was competent and one with a wide dragnet”. It further added that, “we have it on good authority that the N49million was planted by the EFCC to create the impression that Magu is working and a major crime-bursting (sic) czar.”

For the avoidance of doubt, the EFCC is a serious and responsible agency which is not associated with frivolity and could not have engaged in any make-belief scheme to impress anybody. The reputation that the agency has today is built on solid and verifiable evidence of effectiveness in law enforcement that is acknowledged the world over. The record of conviction and recovery of stolen assets which have endeared the EFCC to Nigerians was not built on the quicksand of vain glory.

When the EFCC stormed the suburbs of Kaduna in February and recovered over $9.7million from the home of Andrew Yakubu, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, was that a stunt to sway the Senate for confirmation? When the Commission traced, recovered and confiscated $15m and $115m from Patience Jonathan and Diezani Allison Madueke respectively, were those stunts to curry the favour of the Senate?

The tens of billions of naira recovered from military officers, politicians and even newspaper publishers from the $2.1billion arms procurement scandal in the Office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, were those also a stunt?
Only the criminally gullible will not see through the intent of the Thisday report which is clearly fabricated to embarrass.

Na so dem dey call figure yet Magu couldn't say how much had been recovered. Abeg they should spare us their tales by moonlight. Are there no cameras in that airport? How come it didn't pick up whoever supposedly had that cash and who conveniently disappeared because he spiritually sensed the presence of the EFCC?

What sane individual will carry 49m illegally in small denominations of Two hundred and Fifty naira notes? 1k no dey? Dollar kwanu? Rubbish and ingredients!

Social media can really exaggerate things, the money was actually not dirty money, a business man needed mint money in Lagos and there is non at CBN Lagos so he got it in abuja, he sent N50M but CBN guys pocketed N1M as their commission and gave him N49M in 200 and 50 naira mint notes

The money was taken by the mans boy to kaduna since abuja airport is closed to be airlifted to Lagos then the money was seen and immigration then they called efcc out of the urge to claim glory they quickly spread the news on social media, only for the efcc boys to later get confirmation that it was genuine transaction they allowed the money to leave to Lagos that very day, if you know anyone in kaduna airport ask this is what happened.

By the way why would a crook take dirty money via airport and in small note like 50 naira notes? , when he can easily buy dollar and just put it in his pocket or at worse take it in 1000 notes, obviously someone want to use the money to shine but there is no cause for alarm, the N49M is clean and currently with the owner

I think the guy above you has answered your question. He just needs to add the name of the owner of the money to complete the story.

He seems to know a lot about the N49m. If the EFCC is still looking for the person, he should be able to help them. Lol
