Its an open secret that El-Rufai is one of the closest ally to Buhari beside Mamman Daura. In fact, he was so close to Buhari that at the inception of this administration, El-Rufai was acting like a Vice President.

According to insiders, El-Rufai's loyalty was simply for Buhari to endorse him as the next president in order for him to enjoy the vote of Buhari's cult-like followership especially in the north.

Many people believed Buhari will never make it back from his recent leave in London. There were reports of several secret meetings especially in the North on different strategies to adopt in the event of Buhari's demise. During this period, El-Rufai might have lobbied to be presented as Osinbajo's vice so he could have upper hand contesting in 2019 since Osinbajo is not power hungry and might not contest.
